Chapter 3: The Woman Who Took My Son

The moment the nurse left, Michael’s expression changed again.
It happened so quickly that if I had not been watching him carefully, I might have missed it.
The smile returned.
The gentle eyes returned.
The worried husband returned.
But I knew better now.
I had seen behind the curtain.
And once you see the machinery behind a perfect illusion, you can never believe the illusion again.
Michael sat beside me.
“Laura, I think you need to sleep.”
I looked down at my baby.
My surviving son was peacefully sleeping.
His tiny fingers curled around the edge of the blanket.
A baby who had no idea his brother had been taken away.
A baby who had no idea his own father had been part of the reason they were separated.
“I need to ask you something,” I said.
Michael sighed.
“What now?”
The irritation in his voice appeared for half a second before he hid it.
“Who was the woman in the video?”
His entire body froze.
Not much.
Just enough.
But enough.
“What woman?”
I stared at him.
“The woman who took our son.”
Michael looked away.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“You were there.”
“No.”
“You were standing beside a doctor.”
“Laura—”
“You signed papers.”
His face became pale.
For the first time, he stopped pretending.
“How did you see that?”
The question escaped his mouth before he could stop himself.
And I felt something inside me break.
Because he didn’t ask:
“What video?”
He didn’t ask:
“Are you sure?”
He asked:
“How did you see that?”
He knew.
He knew exactly what I had seen.
I felt my heartbeat pounding in my ears.
“Why, Michael?”
My voice cracked.
“Why did you take our son away from me?”
He didn’t answer.
The silence was worse than any confession.
“Where is he?”
Still nothing.
“Who is she?”
Michael stood up.
“Laura, you don’t understand.”
I almost laughed.
“You’re right.”
I looked at him.
“I don’t understand how the man who held my hand while I cried over my dead baby was the same man who gave him away.”
His face tightened.
“Lower your voice.”
That sentence shocked me.
Not because of what he said.
Because of how he said it.
Not like a husband protecting his wife.
Like someone afraid of being exposed.
“You’re worried someone will hear?”
Michael walked toward the door.
“We need to talk when you’re calmer.”
“No.”
He stopped.
“I want answers now.”
“Not here.”
“Why?”
He looked back.
“Because you don’t know what you’re asking.”
The words sent a chill through me.
“What does that mean?”
He didn’t respond.
Instead, he walked out.
Just like that.
Leaving me alone with my questions.
But this time, I wasn’t powerless.
I grabbed my phone.
There was one person who knew the truth.
Hannah.
I opened the message she had sent.
The number was unknown.
I typed:
I need to talk to you. Now.
The reply came almost instantly.
I knew he would find out you saw the video.
My hands went cold.
I typed:
Who is the woman in the video?
A few seconds passed.
Then:
Her name is Rachel Carter.
My heart stopped.
Carter.
The same last name as Michael.
I typed:
Who is she?
The answer appeared.
Michael’s sister.
I stared at the screen.
His sister.
I had met Michael’s family many times.
His parents.
His cousins.
His relatives.
But never Rachel.
Why?
I typed:
Why have I never heard of her?
The response took longer this time.
Because Michael told everyone she left years ago.
I felt a knot forming in my stomach.
Left where?
Hannah replied:
That’s the problem. Nobody knows.
I looked at my sleeping son.
Then at the door.
Michael had spent years hiding someone from me.
And that someone had my child.
A new message appeared.
Laura, there’s something else you need to know.
I typed:
What?
Three dots appeared.
Disappeared.
Then appeared again.
Finally:
Rachel wasn’t supposed to take your baby.
I stared.
What does that mean?
The answer came.
The plan changed after you survived.
My blood ran cold.
The plan?
I read the sentence again.
The plan.
Not accident.
Not mistake.
Plan.
I called Hannah immediately.
She answered after one ring.
“Laura?”
Her voice was shaking.
“What did you mean?”
There was silence.
“Hannah.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Tell me the truth.”
She took a deep breath.
“Michael and Rachel had been planning something before you delivered.”
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What?”
“I don’t know all the details.”
“How much do you know?”
“I know Michael visited the hospital weeks before your delivery.”
“Why?”
“He was asking questions about newborn procedures.”
My stomach twisted.
“What kind of questions?”
“About identity bracelets.”
I felt my blood freeze.
“Identity bracelets?”
“Yes.”
The bracelet.
The small plastic band around my son’s wrist.
The thing every mother trusts.
“What else?”
“He asked about emergency transfers.”
“Emergency transfers?”
“Yes.”
My voice became quieter.
“Hannah…”
“Yes?”
“Why did you help me?”
A long pause.
Then she answered:
“Because I made a mistake.”
“What mistake?”
Her voice cracked.
“I believed him.”
The room became silent.
“What do you mean?”
“Michael told me your baby had a rare medical condition.”
I frowned.
“He said the child needed immediate specialized care and that you were too unstable to handle the information.”
I closed my eyes.
“He lied to you.”
“Yes.”
“And you helped him?”
“I thought I was saving your baby.”
Her voice broke.
“I helped him move the crib.”
My heart sank.
“You were there?”
“Yes.”
“Then you saw my son.”
“Yes.”
“Was he alive?”
A painful silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
I covered my mouth.
The tears came again.
But this time they were different.
Not grief.
Rage.
“My son was alive.”
“Yes.”
“And you watched him leave?”
“I tried to stop it.”
“Then why didn’t you?”
“Because Michael threatened me.”
I froze.
“What?”
“He told me if I interfered, he would destroy my career.”
The pieces started connecting.
The missing records.
The fake address.
The hidden sister.
The lies.
Michael had built this carefully.
But he had made one mistake.
He underestimated the people who cared about my son.
“What did he say to you?”
Hannah whispered:
“He said…”
She stopped.
“Hannah.”
“He said, ‘Laura will never know. She’ll believe whatever I tell her.’”
I closed my eyes.
The pain was almost unbearable.
Not because he lied.
Because he knew me.
He knew I trusted him.
He knew I loved him.
And he used that love as a weapon.
A knock came from my hospital door.
My entire body froze.
“Someone is here,” I whispered.
Hannah became nervous.
“Laura, listen to me.”
“What?”
“Do not let Michael know you are working with me.”
The door handle moved.
“Why?”
Her final words came through the phone.
“Because if he already knows you found the truth…”
The door opened slightly.
“…your other son may not be the only thing he tries to take from you.”
I looked up.
Michael stood in the doorway.
Holding flowers.
Smiling.
But now I saw the darkness behind that smile.
And I realized something terrifying.
May you like
I wasn’t just trying to find my missing son.
I was fighting against the man who had planned to erase him from my life forever.
