Chapter 5: Michael’s Real Reason for Taking My Son

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

I stood in the middle of that room, holding my baby against my chest.

My son.

The child I had mourned.

The child I had buried in my heart without ever seeing a grave.

And Michael stood across from me, watching.

Not with guilt.

Not with regret.

With fear.

That was the part I would never forget.

A man who had done nothing wrong would have been shocked.

A man who loved me would have rushed forward.

A man who had lost control of a terrible misunderstanding would have tried to explain.

But Michael did none of those things.

He looked like someone whose secret had finally been discovered.

“You followed me,” he said.

His voice was quiet.

Almost calm.

I stared at him.

“You’re asking me why I followed you?”

My tears fell onto my son’s blanket.

“After you stole my baby?”

Michael’s jaw tightened.

“Laura, listen to me.”

“No.”

My voice shook.

“You listen to me.”

The baby moved slightly in my arms.

I looked down at him.

“I spent three days believing my son was dead.”

Michael looked away.

“I cried for him.”

Silence.

“I thought I failed him.”

My voice cracked.

“I thought my body couldn’t protect him.”

Michael took a step forward.

“Laura…”

“Don’t.”

I stepped back.

“Don’t say my name like you’re still the man who loves me.”

The words hit him.

I could see it.

For the first time, the person in front of me was not the perfect husband.

He was just Michael.

A man who had made a choice.

A terrible one.

“Give me my son,” he said.

I froze.

“What?”

“He needs to stay here.”

A cold feeling spread through my body.

“You still think you have the right to tell me where my child belongs?”

Michael looked frustrated.

“You don’t understand the situation.”

“Then explain.”

He stayed silent.

“Explain why you told me he died.”

Nothing.

“Explain why you signed papers.”

Nothing.

“Explain why your sister took him.”

His expression changed.

“You talked to Hannah.”

It wasn’t a question.

I stared at him.

“You’re worried about Hannah.”

Michael ran his hand through his hair.

“Laura, this is bigger than you think.”

I almost laughed.

“Bigger than my son being kidnapped?”

His eyes hardened.

“Watch your words.”

The anger in his voice scared me.

But I refused to move.

“No.”

I held my son tighter.

“I’m done being afraid of you.”

For a moment, Michael looked like he wanted to say something.

Then he sat down on the old chair near the wall.

The anger disappeared.

What replaced it was exhaustion.

“I didn’t want this.”

I stared at him.

“You planned it.”

“No.”

“You signed the documents.”

“Yes.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised me.

But somehow, it made everything worse.

“Why?”

Michael looked at the floor.

“Because I had no choice.”

I shook my head.

“Everyone who hurts someone says that.”

He looked up.

“You think I wanted to take our son away from you?”

“Didn’t you?”

“No.”

His answer came immediately.

“I wanted to protect him.”

I felt anger rising.

“Protect him from what?”

Michael hesitated.

That hesitation told me there was something even deeper.

“From my family.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“My family.”

He looked around the room.

“This house.”

His eyes moved toward the crib.

“You think Rachel took him because she wanted a baby?”

I stayed silent.

“Rachel couldn’t have children.”

I felt my grip tighten.

“So?”

“So my father made a decision years ago.”

A strange feeling entered my chest.

“What decision?”

Michael swallowed.

“My father believed the Carter family needed an heir.”

I stared at him.

“This isn’t the nineteenth century, Michael.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you talking like a baby is property?”

His face showed pain.

“Because that’s how my family thinks.”

The room became silent.

“My father built his entire life around the family name. Money. Reputation. Legacy.”

He looked at me.

“When Rachel found out she could never have children, my father decided that one day she would raise one of mine.”

My blood turned cold.

“What?”

“I didn’t agree.”

“But you let it happen.”

“No.”

Michael shook his head.

“I fought him.”

“When?”

“Years ago.”

I stared.

“Then why did you marry me?”

His eyes became filled with guilt.

“Because I thought I escaped.”

I looked down at my baby.

“But you didn’t.”

“No.”

His voice became quiet.

“When I found out you were pregnant with twins, my father contacted me.”

A chill ran through me.

“What did he say?”

Michael looked away.

“He said one of the babies belonged to the family.”

I felt sick.

“They wanted one of my sons?”

“Yes.”

“And you agreed?”

“No.”

His answer was immediate.

“I refused.”

“Then why is our son here?”

Michael closed his eyes.

“Because my father threatened me.”

“With what?”

“My company.”

I waited.

“My entire career.”

I stared at him.

“That’s why?”

“No.”

His voice broke.

“There was more.”

I looked at him.

“What more?”

Michael’s hands trembled.

“My father threatened you.”

The room went cold.

“What?”

“He said if I didn’t cooperate, he would destroy your life.”

“How?”

Michael looked at the floor.

“I don’t know.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“He has connections. Money. People who can make problems disappear.”

I stared at him.

“So you sacrificed our son to protect me?”

Michael nodded.

“I thought I was choosing the lesser evil.”

The words hurt.

Because part of me understood the fear.

But another part of me could never forgive the decision.

“You took my child away.”

“I thought I could get him back.”

“When?”

“After I found a way to fight them.”

I shook my head.

“You never told me.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“No.”

My voice became louder.

“You were protecting yourself.”

Michael looked at me.

“You think I didn’t suffer?”

I stared at him.

“I watched you cry every day.”

His voice cracked.

“I heard you say goodbye to a child who was alive.”

A tear fell from his eye.

For a moment, I saw the man I had loved.

The father who was also trapped.

But then I remembered.

He still made the choice.

A terrible choice.

“You should have trusted me.”

“I was afraid.”

“You should have fought with me.”

“I thought I was keeping you safe.”

“You don’t get to decide that alone.”

Michael looked down.

And for the first time, he had no answer.

Then a sound came from downstairs.

A car door closing.

Michael’s face changed instantly.

The fear returned.

“What is it?”

He stood up.

“Laura, you need to leave.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because they’re here.”

“Who?”

He looked toward the window.

A black car was parked outside.

My heart sank.

Michael whispered:

“My father.”

The man who started everything.

The man who wanted my son.

The man who had been hiding behind the shadows.

Michael looked at me.

“Take the baby and go.”

I stared at him.

“You’re telling me to run?”

“Yes.”

“Why should I trust you?”

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because this time…”

He looked toward the front door.

“I’m finally going to choose my family.”

The door downstairs opened.

A deep voice echoed through the house.

“Michael.”

Everyone froze.

The voice continued.

“Bring my grandson to me.”

I held my baby tighter.

And for the first time…

I understood.

Michael was not the beginning of the nightmare.

He was only a piece of it.
