Chapter 13: The Truth About Laura’s Bloodline

The words on the screen refused to disappear.

Subject Laura Bennett is the only confirmed carrier of the Hale-Carter genetic sequence.

I read it again.

And again.

But no matter how many times I looked at it, the meaning stayed the same.

The secret wasn’t my son.

The secret wasn’t Michael.

The secret was me.

My entire life.

Everything I thought I knew about myself suddenly felt like a story someone else had written.

“Carrier?”

My voice barely came out.

Dr. Peterson looked uncomfortable.

“I know this is difficult.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“I need you to explain.”

He nodded.

“The report suggests that your genetic background contains a combination of markers from two different family lines.”

“Hale and Carter?”

“Yes.”

I looked at Michael.

His face was pale.

“Victoria.”

He whispered the name.

I turned toward him.

“What?”

Michael looked at the report.

“Her family.”

“What about them?”

“They spent years searching for this.”

My hands tightened.

“Searching for me?”

He nodded slowly.

“But why?”

Nobody answered.

And that was the most terrifying part.

People had lied.

People had stolen my son.

People had changed medical records.

But nobody had ever explained why.

Until now.

Dr. Peterson continued.

“Laura, this report was created before your pregnancy.”

“Who made it?”

He looked at the document.

“The research center connected to Richard Carter.”

I felt anger rising.

“So my information was collected without my knowledge?”

“Yes.”

“And my mother knew?”

The room became silent.

Michael looked at me.

“Maybe.”

That answer hurt.

Because my mother was the one person I thought had always protected me.

I remembered childhood.

Her warnings.

Her strange rules.

Never share too much information.

Never trust powerful people.

Never let strangers ask questions about our family.

I always thought she was being overly cautious.

Now I realized…

She had been afraid.

Dr. Peterson printed the report.

“There’s something else.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He pointed to a section near the bottom.

“Your mother’s name appears here.”

My heart stopped.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

I read the line.

Previous subject: Eleanor Bennett.

I froze.

“That’s impossible.”

Michael looked at me.

“Eleanor?”

“The woman we met.”

Dr. Peterson nodded.

“She wasn’t just your mother’s friend.”

My breathing became shallow.

“What was she?”

He looked at the report.

“Your mother’s research partner.”

The room went silent.

Everything connected.

The photograph.

The genetics.

The secrets.

Eleanor had not only protected me.

She had been part of the reason I was important.

That afternoon, we returned to meet Eleanor.

When she saw our faces, she immediately knew.

“You found it.”

I placed the report on the table.

“You knew.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

The answer hurt.

“How long?”

“Since you were born.”

I stared at her.

“My entire life?”

She nodded.

“I promised your mother I would protect you.”

“By lying to me?”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

I looked away.

“Everyone says that.”

My voice cracked.

“Everyone says they lied because they wanted to protect me.”

Eleanor reached for my hand.

“But this time, it’s true.”

I looked at her.

“Then tell me everything.”

She took a deep breath.

“Your mother and Victoria were once close.”

I already knew that.

“They worked together studying inherited traits among powerful families.”

“And me?”

“You were born with something unusual.”

I frowned.

“Unusual how?”

“Your mother discovered that certain genetic traits could combine naturally between unrelated family lines.”

I looked at my sons.

“And my twins?”

“Yes.”

“Why Ethan?”

Eleanor looked sad.

“Because Richard misunderstood the research.”

“What do you mean?”

“He believed the value came from the Carter bloodline.”

“But it didn’t.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“The important factor came from the combination.”

I stared.

“So my sons aren’t valuable because they are Carters.”

“No.”

“They are valuable because they are themselves.”

Eleanor nodded.

“Exactly.”

For the first time in weeks, I felt a small piece of peace.

My children were not symbols.

Not heirs.

Not experiments.

They were just my babies.

But then I remembered something.

“Why did Victoria call me?”

Eleanor became serious.

“Because she knows the truth now.”

“What truth?”

“That Richard was wrong.”

“And what does she want?”

Eleanor looked at me.

“She wants control.”

“Of my sons?”

“Of the research.”

I frowned.

“What research?”

Eleanor hesitated.

“The original research was destroyed.”

“Destroyed?”

“Yes.”

“Then why does she care?”

Eleanor looked at Michael.

“Because someone recreated it.”

Michael’s expression changed.

“Who?”

Eleanor answered quietly:

“Daniel Brooks.”

The hospital administrator.

The man who disappeared.

My stomach dropped.

“He’s still involved?”

“Yes.”

Michael stood.

“How do you know?”

Eleanor looked afraid.

“Because he contacted me.”

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

The room went silent.

“What did he say?”

Eleanor looked at me.

“He said the experiment failed.”

I felt cold.

“Experiment?”

She continued:

“He said Ethan was not supposed to be born.”

I froze.

“What?”

Michael stepped forward.

“That makes no sense.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“Daniel believed the genetic sequence could only be reproduced through a controlled process.”

She looked at my sons.

“But Laura gave birth naturally.”

A terrible thought appeared.

“They weren’t trying to take my son.”

Eleanor nodded.

“They were trying to recreate something they lost.”

My heart pounded.

The entire nightmare suddenly became clearer.

Richard.

Victoria.

Daniel.

They weren’t just obsessed with power.

They were obsessed with controlling something they didn’t understand.

And my family had become proof that they were wrong.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

My blood ran cold.

You found the truth. Now find out what happened to your mother.

I looked up.

“What is it?”

Michael saw my face.

“Laura?”

I showed him the message.

Eleanor stood immediately.

“No.”

Her voice trembled.

“What?”

She looked terrified.

“They know.”

“Who?”

She whispered:

“Everyone who wanted your family hidden.”

I stared at her.

“What happened to my mother?”

Eleanor’s face changed.

A sadness deeper than anything I had seen before.

“Laura…”

“Yes?”

“Your mother didn’t disappear.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“She was taken.”

The room went silent.

“By who?”

Eleanor looked toward the window.

Like she was afraid someone was listening.

Then she said:

“By the same people who are coming for you now.”

I looked at my sons.

At my family.

At the life I had fought so hard to protect.

And I finally understood.

The hospital betrayal.

The missing baby.

The secret bloodline.

All of it was only one chapter.

The real story had started before I was born.

May you like

And now…

It was coming back for me.
