Chapter 5: The Name in the Shadows

The analyst's fingers froze above the keyboard.
No one in the ballroom moved.
Even the hum of the helicopters outside seemed to fade beneath the weight of anticipation.
The lead FBI investigator stepped closer.
"Report."
The analyst swallowed.
"The offshore trust is protected by multiple shell corporations in the Cayman Islands, Luxembourg, and Singapore."
He enlarged another document.
"We've managed to penetrate the first three layers."
"What did you find?"
"A beneficiary code."
The investigator frowned.
"Only a code?"
"Yes."
He turned the monitor so everyone could see.
Across the center of the screen appeared five characters.
A-17.
Nathan frowned.
"What does that even mean?"
The investigator didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked toward my grandfather.
To my surprise...
Grandfather's expression hardened for the first time that evening.
He knew the code.
My father noticed it immediately.
"Father?"
Grandfather remained silent.
"Do you recognize it?"
A long breath escaped him.
"I was hoping..."
"...I would never see that designation again."
The room fell silent.
Nathan looked from one face to another.
"What is A-17?"
Grandfather slowly raised his eyes.
"Thirty-two years ago..."
"There were seventeen families."
"They weren't connected by blood."
"They were connected by power."
The FBI agents exchanged glances.
Several younger investigators looked confused.
The older ones did not.
Grandfather continued.
"They financed governments."
"Controlled shipping routes."
"Influenced elections."
"They never appeared in magazines."
"They never sought publicity."
"They simply moved the world's money."
Nathan laughed nervously.
"That's ridiculous."
Grandfather ignored him.
"The alliance collapsed after internal betrayals."
"Most of the families disappeared."
"Some sold their empires."
"Others were destroyed."
"And a few..."
He looked at the screen again.
"...went underground."
The code A-17.
Belonged to one of them.
The lead investigator asked quietly,
"Which family?"
Grandfather answered without hesitation.
"The Blackwood Consortium."
A ripple spread across the federal agents.
One senior prosecutor actually whispered,
"I thought they were a myth."
"They prefer people to think that."
Celeste's breathing became uneven.
Nathan noticed.
"You know them."
She looked away.
"I..."
"You know them!"
"I've only heard stories!"
Nathan grabbed her arm.
"Tell me!"
She pulled free.
"My father handled offshore wealth."
"He once received instructions never to accept clients connected to Blackwood."
"Even asking questions..."
"...was considered dangerous."
Nathan stared.
"You never told me this."
"Because I never believed we'd cross paths!"
The analyst cleared his throat.
"There's more."
Everyone turned.
"The monthly transfers into Monroe Consulting weren't payments for consulting."
"What were they?"
He opened another file.
"They were performance bonuses."
Nathan frowned.
"Performance?"
The analyst nodded.
"They increased every time Ashford Global acquired another logistics company."
The investigator's expression darkened.
"So someone was financing Ashford's expansion..."
"...without his knowledge."
Nathan looked stunned.
"No."
"I negotiated every acquisition myself."
The investigator replied,
"You negotiated."
"They paid."
Nathan's knees nearly buckled.
Everything he believed he had built...
Every success.
Every promotion.
Every award.
Had someone else been pulling the strings?
I watched Nathan carefully.
For the first time since I had met him...
He looked genuinely lost.
Not angry.
Not arrogant.
Lost.
He whispered,
"I don't understand."
Grandfather answered quietly.
"You were never the architect."
"You were the tool."
Nathan looked horrified.
"No."
"I built my company."
Grandfather shook his head.
"You built an illusion."
"The money arrived exactly when you needed it."
"The banks approved impossible loans."
"Competitors collapsed at convenient moments."
"You believed it was because you were brilliant."
Nathan opened his mouth.
Closed it again.
He remembered.
The strange investor who appeared at the last minute.
The unexpected financing.
The miraculous government contracts.
The impossible opportunities.
They had always seemed like luck.
Now...
Luck had a face.
The investigator turned toward Celeste.
"Did you know Ashford Global was being financed?"
She slowly nodded.
"Not at first."
Nathan looked at her.
"You knew?"
She couldn't meet his eyes.
"I found out about eighteen months ago."
"And you never told me?"
"They ordered me not to."
Nathan's voice cracked.
"They?"
Celeste's hands trembled.
"I never met them."
"I only received encrypted messages."
"They always came from different countries."
"They never used names."
"Only instructions."
The investigator leaned forward.
"What kind of instructions?"
Celeste hesitated.
Grandfather spoke calmly.
"Answer."
She closed her eyes.
"They told me to stay close to Nathan."
"They told me to encourage aggressive expansion."
"They told me to isolate Evelyn."
Nathan stared.
"What?"
She continued, tears forming.
"They said..."
"...the wife could become a problem."
The room became deathly quiet.
Nathan slowly turned toward me.
"What does that mean?"
Celeste's voice barely rose above a whisper.
"They knew who you were."
Every person in the ballroom froze.
My father stepped forward.
"Explain."
"I don't know everything."
"But one message said..."
She struggled to breathe.
"'The Sterling granddaughter must remain distracted until Phase Three.'"
Grandfather's face turned cold.
Ice cold.
"When did you receive that message?"
"Almost two years ago."
My father whispered,
"They've been watching her..."
Grandfather corrected him.
"No."
"They've been watching us."
One of the security officers hurried toward Grandfather.
"Sir."
"A secure communication."
Grandfather accepted a satellite phone.
He listened for nearly thirty seconds.
Not once did he interrupt.
When the call ended...
His expression had changed.
"What happened?"
My father asked.
Grandfather looked directly at him.
"Our Zurich office was breached."
"What?"
"Someone accessed classified archives."
"When?"
"Tonight."
The timing couldn't be coincidence.
Whoever the Blackwood Consortium was...
They had anticipated this confrontation.
Nathan suddenly stepped forward.
"I'll help."
Every eye turned toward him.
"I know my company."
"I know every acquisition."
"I'll tell you everything."
My father looked at him without emotion.
"And why would we trust you?"
Nathan lowered his head.
"Because..."
"...I think they used me too."
The investigator folded his arms.
"Convenient."
Nathan shook his head.
"No."
"If there's someone above Celeste..."
"If someone manipulated my company..."
"Then they wanted something bigger."
Grandfather studied him carefully.
"What do you think they wanted?"
Nathan answered almost immediately.
"Logistics."
The room fell silent.
He continued.
"They weren't interested in profits."
"They wanted shipping routes."
"Warehouses."
"Customs access."
"Ports."
He looked toward the investigators.
"My company operates in forty-two countries."
"If someone controlled Ashford Global..."
"...they could move almost anything."
Weapons.
Money.
People.
Data.
No one needed to say the words aloud.
Everyone understood.
Just then, another security officer rushed into the ballroom, his usually calm expression gone.
"Sir!"
Grandfather turned sharply.
"What is it?"
"The surveillance team has intercepted an encrypted transmission."
"Source?"
"Blackthorn Manor."
The investigator frowned.
"Impossible."
"We've seized every device."
The officer slowly raised a tiny object sealed inside an evidence bag.
A miniature transmitter.
No larger than a shirt button.
"It wasn't transmitting from Mr. Ashford."
"It wasn't transmitting from Miss Monroe."
He looked toward me.
The room held its breath.
"It was hidden..."
"...inside Mrs. Evelyn Sterling Ashford's medical bandages."
A chill swept through the ballroom.
Someone had planted a bug on me.
Not before tonight.
After the paramedics had begun treating my wounds.
Which meant only one thing.
May you like
The enemy...
Was already inside the investigation.
