Chapter 14: The Woman Who Returned from the Dead

The ballroom fell into stunned silence.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

On every monitor, the woman stepped fully into the corridor behind Victor.

She wore black tactical clothing instead of the elegant dresses I had always imagined my mother wearing.

Her dark hair, streaked with silver, was tied neatly behind her head.

A faint scar crossed her left cheek.

But there was no mistaking her face.

I had seen it every day for years.

In old family photographs.

In the mirror.

My lips trembled.

"...Mom?"

Victor didn't turn immediately.

Instead...

He smiled.

"I wondered how long it would take."

The woman lowered the pistol in her hand.

"I was beginning to think you'd forgotten me."

My grandfather's expression changed.

Not to surprise.

To disappointment.

Nathan noticed.

He looked at Grandfather.

"You knew."

Grandfather closed his eyes.

"I hoped..."

"...I was wrong."

I stared at him.

"You knew she was alive?"

My father answered before Grandfather could.

"No."

"We knew..."

"...someone had been leaving us messages."

He looked toward the screen.

"Only your mother knew the codes."

For years...

Anonymous intelligence had reached Sterling security.

Warnings about attacks.

Lists of compromised officials.

The locations of hidden Blackwood safe houses.

Every tip had arrived minutes before disaster.

Never early enough to reveal the sender.

Always late enough to protect the source.

Grandfather had named the unknown informant:

Ghost.

Now...

Ghost had a face.

Victor slowly turned.

His smile never faded.

"You took your time, Eleanor."

She answered calmly.

"I had to make sure your attention stayed on me."

Victor glanced at the open passage behind her.

"Only one person?"

"You expected an army?"

Victor laughed.

"I expected better."

Alexander looked between them.

His expression was one of complete confusion.

"You know each other."

Victor smiled.

"We've known each other..."

"...for thirty years."

The woman corrected him.

"No."

"I've spent thirty years pretending not to know you."

Nathan frowned.

"I don't understand."

Neither did I.

If she was alive...

Why hadn't she come home?

Why let us believe she was dead?

The questions burned inside me.

Victor answered them himself.

"Eleanor made a choice."

He looked directly into the camera.

"She chose the mission."

Instead of denying it...

She nodded once.

My heart shattered.

She finally looked toward the camera.

Toward me.

Tears gathered in her eyes.

"I'm sorry, Evelyn."

The words cut deeper than Nathan's whip ever had.

"I searched for you."

My voice broke.

"You never came."

She closed her eyes.

"If I had..."

"...Victor would've found you."

Grandfather quietly added,

"Only five people knew she survived."

My father looked down.

"I wasn't one of them."

Nathan stared.

"You kept it from your own son?"

Grandfather nodded.

"The fewer people who knew..."

"...the longer she lived."

The FBI commander interrupted.

"Enough."

He looked toward the screen.

"We need to stop Victor."

Eleanor nodded.

"That's why I'm here."

Victor folded his hands behind his back.

"You've spent thirty years inside my organization."

"Yes."

"And yet..."

"...you still failed."

She smiled.

"Did I?"

Victor frowned.

Eleanor reached into her jacket.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

She removed a small black flash drive.

No larger than a thumb.

Victor's smile disappeared.

"Where did you get that?"

"I've been stealing from you..."

"...one file at a time."

The FBI cyber chief leaned forward.

"What is it?"

Eleanor answered without looking away from Victor.

"The Blackwood Ledger."

Every investigator in the ballroom froze.

The Attorney General whispered,

"The ledger..."

The cyber chief looked stunned.

"If that's real..."

Grandfather finished the sentence.

"It contains every operative."

"Every account."

"Every politician."

"Every judge."

"Every corporation."

"Every assassination order."

Everything.

Thirty years of Blackwood operations.

Victor's empire...

Reduced to a single piece of encrypted storage.

Victor's calm expression vanished for the first time.

"Give it back."

Eleanor laughed softly.

"No."

"I've spent half my life earning this."

Alexander looked toward the flash drive.

"You never told me about that."

Victor ignored him.

His attention remained fixed on Eleanor.

"You betrayed me."

She tilted her head.

"I infiltrated you."

Suddenly...

Victor drew a pistol.

Everything happened in less than a second.

He fired.

Bang!

Alexander reacted instantly.

Without thinking...

He stepped between them.

The bullet struck his shoulder.

Blood sprayed across the stone wall.

"Eleanor!"

He stumbled.

The flash drive slipped from her hand.

It skidded across the floor.

Victor lunged toward it.

At the exact same moment...

Alexander grabbed Victor's arm.

"No!"

Victor looked at him in disbelief.

"What are you doing?"

Alexander's voice shook.

"I don't know anymore."

In the ballroom...

I instinctively took a step toward the monitor.

"Alexander!"

He couldn't hear me.

Or perhaps...

He could.

Because he slowly turned toward the camera.

Our eyes met.

For the first time...

Not as enemies.

Not as strangers.

As brother and sister.

Victor slammed Alexander against the wall.

"You ungrateful boy!"

"I raised you!"

Alexander coughed blood.

"You raised..."

"...a weapon."

Victor struck him again.

"I gave you purpose!"

Alexander laughed weakly.

"You gave me..."

"...your hatred."

The FBI commander slammed his fist onto the table.

"We're wasting time!"

Grandfather nodded.

"Agreed."

He looked toward the hidden tenth passage marked on the blueprint.

Then toward my father.

"Edward."

My father understood immediately.

"No."

Grandfather's voice became firm.

"You know what must be done."

The room became quiet.

Nathan looked between them.

"What?"

Grandfather slowly handed the old brass key to my father.

"This key opens the tenth passage."

My father accepted it with trembling hands.

Grandfather continued.

"You have exactly seven minutes before the vault seals forever."

My father looked at me.

Then at the screen where Alexander was still struggling to protect Eleanor.

His jaw tightened.

"I can save one."

Silence.

"Maybe two."

More silence.

"But not three."

I felt my heart stop.

Grandfather nodded.

"I know."

My father closed his eyes.

"When the time comes..."

"...who do I choose?"

No one answered.

Because everyone in the room already knew.

Whatever happened next...

May you like

Someone in that underground labyrinth...

Wasn't coming back.
