Chapter 12: The Second Child

The silence after Victor's final sentence was unlike anything that had come before.
Not fear.
Not shock.
Something deeper.
A secret buried for decades had just clawed its way into the light.
My grandfather did not move.
My father did not speak.
Their silence told me more than any denial could have.
I looked from one to the other.
"...Tell me."
No one answered.
My voice grew louder.
"Tell me!"
The rumble beneath the manor continued.
The vault's locking rings groaned somewhere below our feet.
Yet no one in the ballroom seemed to hear them anymore.
Finally...
Grandfather lowered himself into a chair.
For the first time since I had known him...
He looked tired.
Not physically.
Spiritually.
"There was another child."
My world tilted.
"What?"
My father closed his eyes.
"You were born first."
"Twelve minutes later..."
"...your mother gave birth to a second baby."
I couldn't breathe.
"A twin?"
He nodded.
"A boy."
Nathan whispered,
"My God..."
The ballroom remained frozen.
I searched every face around me, hoping someone would tell me this was impossible.
No one did.
I looked at my father.
"Where is he?"
He didn't answer.
Instead...
Grandfather did.
"We don't know."
The words hit me harder than any lash Nathan had ever delivered.
"You don't..."
"...know?"
Grandfather slowly nodded.
"The hospital was attacked."
The room grew still.
"It happened less than an hour after you were born."
He stared somewhere far beyond the ballroom, as though watching memories no one else could see.
"It was snowing."
"The hospital lost power."
"Security cameras failed."
"Emergency generators never activated."
Victor.
Even before Grandfather spoke his name, I knew.
"He came for us."
Grandfather nodded.
"Not personally."
"But his people did."
My father finally forced himself to continue.
"Your mother protected both of you."
"She locked herself inside the maternity ward."
"There were six guards outside."
"What happened?"
"They all died."
The FBI agents exchanged silent glances.
Grandfather continued.
"When we finally reached the room..."
"...your mother was still alive."
His voice cracked for the first time.
"Barely."
I reached for his hand.
He squeezed mine.
"There were two cribs."
He swallowed.
"Only one remained."
A tear rolled down my cheek.
"They took him."
My father nodded.
"We searched."
"For months."
"Then years."
"There was nothing."
Nathan whispered,
"So Victor..."
"...raised him."
No one answered.
Because no one needed to.
The cyber analyst suddenly looked up from his computer.
"Sir."
"What?"
"I've been comparing the biometric data from the transmitter."
He enlarged several charts.
"Evelyn's DNA profile..."
"...contains markers consistent with a monozygotic twin."
The FBI commander frowned.
"You can determine that?"
"Not conclusively."
"But..."
He hesitated.
"There are indications."
The room fell silent again.
Science had just confirmed what Victor claimed.
Grandfather stood.
"If he's alive..."
"He'll be approximately twenty-eight."
The analyst nodded.
"Statistically identical DNA."
Nathan frowned.
"Then..."
"...he could also open the Archive."
The realization spread through the room.
Victor hadn't spent thirty years searching for Evelyn because she was the only key.
He had possessed another key all along.
He had only needed to find the second.
My father suddenly looked toward the blueprints.
"No."
Grandfather turned.
"What?"
"The emergency protocol."
His eyes widened.
"If Victor already has the third sapphire..."
"And the second child..."
"...then he doesn't need Evelyn."
The room became deathly quiet.
Grandfather whispered,
"Unless..."
The engineer looked toward the vault monitor.
His face turned white.
"Sir..."
"I think I know why."
He connected several architectural schematics.
The Archive wasn't protected by one biometric lock.
It was protected by three.
First: A Sterling sapphire authorization.
Second: DNA verification.
Third: Simultaneous confirmation from both bloodline heirs.
The engineer slowly looked up.
"The vault wasn't built for one successor."
"It was built..."
"...for twins."
No one spoke.
I stared at the blueprint.
Every piece suddenly fit together.
The pendant.
The secrecy.
The decades of attacks.
Victor hadn't been chasing me.
He had been assembling the complete set of keys.
The communications officer interrupted.
"We've recovered another transmission."
Victor appeared once more.
This time he wasn't standing.
He sat calmly before the massive vault.
Beside him...
A figure stood in the shadows.
Tall.
Broad-shouldered.
Face hidden beneath a hood.
Victor smiled.
"I believe..."
"...it's time for a family reunion."
My heartbeat thundered.
Slowly...
The hooded figure stepped into the light.
Dark hair.
Gray eyes.
The same high cheekbones I saw every morning in the mirror.
The same jawline.
The same expression.
Only...
Harder.
Colder.
As if life had carved every kindness away.
The ballroom gasped.
Nathan whispered,
"He..."
"...looks exactly like you."
The man studied the camera.
Then...
He spoke.
His voice sounded eerily familiar.
"I've waited twenty-eight years..."
"...to meet my sister."
I couldn't look away.
Every instinct inside me screamed that he wasn't lying.
This wasn't a trick.
This was my brother.
The brother I'd never known existed.
Victor placed a hand on the young man's shoulder.
"Proud of him?"
Grandfather's face turned to stone.
Victor smiled wider.
"I raised him well."
The young man never took his eyes off the camera.
Then...
He said something no one expected.
"I'm sorry."
Victor turned toward him, surprised.
The young man repeated it.
"I'm sorry..."
"...Evelyn."
Everyone in the ballroom froze.
There was pain in his voice.
Real pain.
As though he had carried those words his entire life.
Victor's smile faded.
Slowly.
Almost imperceptibly.
For the first time that night...
May you like
It looked as though even he wasn't completely certain...
He still controlled the person standing beside him.
