Chapter 2: The Federal Convoy

The flashing red and blue lights reflected across the polished marble floor like rivers of fire.

Nathan Ashford stared toward the open entrance.

His breathing had become shallow.

"No..."

"This can't be happening."

The convoy outside stretched farther than anyone inside the ballroom could see.

Black federal SUVs.

Unmarked armored vehicles.

Two ambulances.

Several news helicopters already circled overhead, their cameras capturing every second from the sky.

Nathan turned toward my father.

"Who are you?"

My father looked at him for several silent seconds before answering.

"I asked you a question four years ago."

Nathan frowned.

"What?"

"When you came to ask for my daughter's hand in marriage."

Nathan searched his memory.

Then his expression shifted.

He remembered.

Four years earlier...

My father had worn ordinary clothes.

An inexpensive watch.

A simple wedding ring.

He had welcomed Nathan into what appeared to be a comfortable countryside home.

Nathan later joked to his friends that my father was "a retired accountant with decent manners."

That afternoon my father had asked only one question.

"If one day my daughter loses everything...

Would you still protect her?"

Nathan hadn't hesitated.

"I'll spend my life making sure she never cries."

My father smiled.

"I hope you remember saying that."

Nathan had.

For about six months.

The present crashed back into place.

Nathan swallowed hard.

"...Who are you?"

Before my father could answer, another convoy rolled through the estate gates.

This one carried government plates.

Every security officer immediately stepped aside.

Several men and women in dark suits entered the ballroom.

Their badges flashed beneath the chandelier.

Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Internal Revenue Service.

Financial Crimes Division.

Department of Justice.

Celeste's champagne glass slipped from her fingers.

It shattered across the marble.

Nathan forced himself to smile.

"There must be some misunderstanding."

One of the agents approached.

"Mr. Nathan Ashford?"

"Yes."

"You are requested to remain where you are."

Nathan laughed nervously.

"Requested?"

The agent met his eyes.

"For your own benefit."

Nathan's lawyer instincts immediately surfaced.

"I haven't been charged with anything."

"Not yet."

Nathan pulled out his phone.

"I'm calling my legal team."

"You may."

"My phone isn't working."

The agent calmly replied.

"It won't."

Nathan looked confused.

"What?"

"All communications leaving this estate have been temporarily restricted under federal warrant."

Nathan stared.

"That's illegal."

The agent handed him a folder.

"It isn't."

Nathan opened it.

His hands immediately began shaking.

Search warrants.

Asset freezes.

Electronic seizure orders.

Financial subpoenas.

There wasn't just one judge's signature.

There were seven.

Across the ballroom, two paramedics hurried toward me.

One knelt beside me.

"Ma'am, can you hear me?"

"Yes."

"We're going to examine your injuries."

My father nodded once.

"Take your time."

As they carefully lifted the jacket covering my shoulders, both medics froze.

One quietly whispered,

"...Dear God."

Neither had expected what two hundred lashes actually looked like.

My back wasn't merely bruised.

Large sections of skin had split open.

Fresh blood mixed with older wounds Nathan had inflicted during previous months.

One medic looked toward another.

"Photograph everything."

Nathan suddenly interrupted.

"Wait."

"They don't have permission."

Every eye turned toward him.

He pointed at me.

"She's my wife."

"I decide—"

My father's voice interrupted him.

"No."

Nathan looked over.

"You lost that privilege the moment you raised your hand against her."

Another vehicle arrived.

This time it wasn't federal.

It belonged to the state's Attorney General.

Nathan's confidence cracked a little further.

Even Celeste looked terrified now.

She leaned close to him.

"Nathan..."

"You said this couldn't happen."

"It won't."

His voice lacked conviction.

"They're bluffing."

"They have nothing."

My father quietly smiled.

"Nothing?"

He nodded toward my sapphire pendant.

Nathan followed his gaze.

"What does that necklace have to do with anything?"

I slowly reached up and unclasped it.

The sapphire rested in my palm.

One of my father's security officers accepted it carefully.

He pressed a hidden switch.

The gemstone separated into two perfect halves.

Inside...

A tiny black device blinked.

Nathan frowned.

"What is that?"

The security officer connected it to a tablet.

Seconds later...

The ballroom speakers came alive.

Nathan's own voice echoed through the room.

"Hit her again."

"No one will ever believe her."

"If she dies...I'll make it disappear."

Silence.

Another recording played.

Celeste laughed.

"Harder."

"She's still conscious."

"Make sure she remembers tonight forever."

Nathan's face turned white.

"Turn that off!"

Nobody moved.

Another recording.

"Transfer another three million through Monroe Consulting."

"Hide it under the Singapore account."

Celeste's recorded voice answered.

"Already done."

Another recording.

"Destroy the supplier contracts."

"We'll blame Evelyn if auditors ask questions."

Nathan lunged toward the tablet.

Two federal agents stopped him before he reached it.

"Sit down."

"I said turn it off!"

One agent calmly replied,

"You've already said enough."

Nathan suddenly turned toward me.

His expression changed completely.

Gone was the arrogant executive.

Now he looked desperate.

"Evelyn..."

"Please."

"You know I didn't mean any of this."

Celeste stared at him.

"What are you doing?"

Nathan ignored her.

He dropped onto one knee.

"Evelyn."

"I'm sorry."

"I lost control."

"We can fix this."

"I'll fire Celeste."

"I'll confess."

"I'll pay for your treatment."

"I'll do anything."

I looked into the eyes of the man I had once loved.

Months ago...

Those words would have broken me.

Tonight...

I felt nothing.

"I believed your apologies before."

Nathan reached toward me.

"I still love you."

My father stepped between us.

"No."

Nathan looked around wildly.

"You have to believe me."

"I was manipulated."

He pointed directly at Celeste.

"She planned everything."

Celeste spun around.

"What?"

"You told me to punish Evelyn!"

"You stole the money!"

"You forged those companies!"

Celeste laughed in disbelief.

"You signed every transfer yourself!"

"You wanted the money!"

"You wanted Evelyn gone!"

Nathan shouted,

"You're lying!"

"So are you!"

Within seconds they were screaming accusations at one another.

The federal agents simply watched.

Neither interrupted.

Because every word spoken voluntarily became evidence.

One investigator quietly smiled.

"They're doing our interview for us."

Outside, another helicopter landed.

Unlike the others, this one was matte black with no visible markings.

Every member of my father's security detail immediately straightened.

The chief of security walked quickly inside.

"Sir."

"He has arrived."

Even my father stood a little straighter.

Nathan noticed.

"Who?"

The answer came before anyone spoke.

Slow.

Measured footsteps echoed through the entrance hall.

Every federal agent instinctively turned toward the doorway.

Some even nodded respectfully.

Whoever was arriving...

Even the government recognized his authority.

A tall elderly gentleman entered carrying a polished ebony cane.

His silver hair was immaculate.

His expression unreadable.

Despite his age, the room seemed to bend around his presence.

The moment my father saw him, he inclined his head.

"Dad."

Nathan's eyes widened.

His voice barely emerged as a whisper.

"...Your father?"

I slowly looked toward the elderly man.

A gentle smile finally appeared on his weathered face.

"My granddaughter..."

"I came as fast as I could."

Nathan's heart nearly stopped.

He had just discovered that the man he thought was merely a retired accountant...

Was not the head of the family.

May you like

He was only the son.

And the true patriarch had just walked into Blackthorn Manor.
