Chapter 15: The Choice

The question hung over the ballroom like a blade.
Who do I choose?
No one answered my father.
Not Grandfather.
Not the FBI commander.
Not even me.
Because there was no answer that didn't end in heartbreak.
The underground complex had begun its final lockdown.
On the engineer's monitor, a digital countdown flashed in crimson.
06:58
06:57
06:56
Every second vanished forever.
My father closed his hand around the old brass key.
For years he had commanded soldiers.
He had sent men into impossible situations.
He understood one truth better than anyone else.
Sometimes...
No plan existed that saved everyone.
Grandfather rested a hand on his shoulder.
"Edward."
My father looked up.
"You've carried enough guilt."
"This choice belongs to me."
He reached for the brass key.
But my father stepped back.
"No."
"If anyone walks into those tunnels..."
"It will be me."
Before anyone could stop him, Nathan spoke.
"I'll go too."
The room turned toward him.
The FBI commander frowned.
"Absolutely not."
Nathan met his gaze.
"You need someone who knows this house."
Grandfather answered quietly.
"You know the visible part."
"I know enough."
Nathan looked at my father.
"I owe your family more than an apology."
"You owe us your testimony."
"I'll give you that."
He took a slow breath.
"But if Alexander is really Evelyn's brother..."
"He deserves a chance."
My father studied him for several seconds.
"You may not come back."
Nathan nodded.
"I know."
I stepped forward.
"I'm going."
"No."
My father answered instantly.
"I'm the reason Victor is there."
"No."
"If I don't..."
"No."
His voice was sharper than I had ever heard.
"You've already paid enough."
I looked at him.
"I won't let anyone die because of me."
He walked toward me.
Very gently...
He cupped my face with both hands.
"When you were born..."
"I promised your mother one thing."
His voice trembled.
"I promised that if one of us had to die..."
"...it would never be you."
The room fell silent.
Even Grandfather lowered his eyes.
Suddenly...
The engineer shouted.
"Movement!"
Everyone looked toward the monitor.
Victor had recovered the pistol.
Alexander was bleeding heavily.
Eleanor had taken cover behind a stone column.
The flash drive...
Still lay on the floor between them.
No one could reach it without exposing themselves.
Victor laughed.
"Thirty years..."
He slowly picked up the flash drive.
"And it ends like this."
Eleanor shook her head.
"No."
Victor smiled.
"Yes."
He held the drive over a narrow drainage channel running along the corridor.
"One drop..."
"...and every secret dies with me."
The FBI cyber chief looked horrified.
"If he destroys that..."
"We lose every lead."
The Attorney General nodded grimly.
"So do half our prosecutions."
Then Alexander did something no one expected.
He looked directly at Victor.
"You always told me..."
"...a weapon obeys."
Victor smiled.
"It does."
Alexander nodded.
"So you never taught me..."
"...how to think."
Victor's smile faded.
Without warning...
Alexander slammed his injured shoulder into Victor.
Both men crashed into the stone wall.
The flash drive flew from Victor's hand.
It bounced once.
Twice.
Then disappeared through the drainage grate.
"No!"
Victor lunged after it.
Too late.
The drive was gone.
Swept into the underground water system.
For a heartbeat...
Everyone froze.
Thirty years of Blackwood secrets...
Had just vanished.
Then...
Eleanor smiled.
Victor stared at her.
"You planned this."
She nodded.
"There was never only one copy."
Victor's eyes widened.
"You..."
"The drive was a decoy."
She reached into the lining of her jacket.
And removed another.
Identical.
"The real ledger..."
"...never left my possession."
In the ballroom, several FBI agents actually laughed in disbelief.
Nathan shook his head.
"She's incredible."
Grandfather smiled proudly.
"She's my daughter."
Victor's calm finally shattered.
He fired twice.
Bang!
Bang!
Eleanor ducked.
The bullets struck the vault door.
Sparks exploded across the corridor.
The enormous steel mechanism began to vibrate.
The engineer looked at his monitor.
His face turned white.
"The impact damaged the locking system."
"What does that mean?"
He stared at the readings.
"The emergency seal..."
"...has failed."
Grandfather frowned.
"Failed?"
"It won't close."
For a moment...
Everyone thought that was good news.
Then the engineer looked up.
"No."
"It's much worse."
He enlarged another diagram.
The vault wasn't designed to remain partially open.
If the locking rings jammed halfway...
The entire underground chamber would become unstable.
Ancient hydraulic supports.
Counterweights.
Pressure systems.
Everything depended on the seal completing correctly.
The engineer whispered,
"We have four minutes."
Nathan frowned.
"Until what?"
The answer chilled every soul in the room.
"The entire Archive..."
"...collapses."
Deep beneath the manor...
Dust began falling from the stone ceiling.
Large cracks raced across the walls.
Alexander looked upward.
"Eleanor!"
She understood instantly.
"The ceiling!"
Victor looked around.
For the first time...
Fear crossed his face.
Real fear.
The ground beneath him trembled violently.
He whispered,
"No..."
The empire he had spent thirty years chasing...
Was about to become his tomb.
Back in the ballroom...
The hidden door to the tenth passage slowly unlocked with a deep metallic click.
My father looked toward it.
Then at me.
Then at Grandfather.
He took one steady breath.
"I'm bringing them home."
He turned toward Nathan.
"You still coming?"
Nathan answered without hesitation.
"Until the end."
The two men stepped toward the hidden passage.
Before disappearing into the darkness...
Nathan stopped beside me.
He didn't ask for forgiveness.
He knew he hadn't earned it.
Instead...
He quietly removed his wedding ring.
Placed it in my hand.
And said only four words.
"You deserve better."
Then he turned.
The hidden stone door closed behind them.
The countdown continued.
03:59
03:58
03:57
Far below Blackthorn Manor...
Three generations of the Sterling family...
And the man who had destroyed them...
May you like
Were racing toward a confrontation from which not everyone would return.
End of Part One.
