Chapter 7 - UNDER GRAND CENTRALThat night, Arthur took me beneath Grand Central.

Not the public station.
A restricted underground section hidden behind an old maintenance corridor.
The key opened a steel door.
Inside was a vault.
No sign.
No cameras.
Only a single metal cabinet.
Arthur opened it.
Inside was a box.
My name was written across the top.
ELEANOR.
My hands trembled.
I opened it.
Inside was a passport.
Not mine.
Robert's.
A second passport.
Another name.
Robert had not always been Robert Whitmore.
There was a photograph.
A younger Robert.
A different surname.
Elias Whitmore.
I dropped the passport.
“That’s impossible.”
Arthur stared.
“I didn't know.”
I looked at him.
“How could my husband have another identity?”
A recording device sat beneath the passport.
Arthur pressed play.
Robert's voice filled the vault.
“Eleanor, if you are hearing this, then I failed to protect you.”
I closed my eyes.
“I need you to know the man you married was real.”
A pause.
“But the name wasn't.”
I started crying.
“You were the only part of my life that wasn't a lie.”
The recording continued.
“Your father-in-law did not kill Elias Whitmore.”
Arthur's head lifted.
“What?”
Robert continued.
“He hid him.”
I stared at the device.
“Because Elias was being hunted.”
Robert's voice became strained.
“The people hunting him wanted the family fortune.”
I looked at Arthur.
“Who?”
Robert answered before Arthur could.
“The people who built Black Harbor.”
The recording ended.
I stood frozen.
Then another recording automatically began.
This one was not Robert.
It was a woman's voice.
“Robert, you know what happens if Eleanor learns the truth.”
I looked at Arthur.
“Who is that?”
He shook his head.
The woman's voice continued.
“You promised she would never know.”
Then Robert answered.
“She deserves to know.”
“No. She deserves to live.”
I felt cold.
The woman said,
“If you tell her, they will kill her.”
The recording stopped.
Arthur stared at me.
“Who threatened your husband?”
“I don't know.”
Then I noticed something written beneath the recording device.
Three names.
Arthur Whitmore.
Victor Hale.
Daniel Whitmore.
I stepped backward.
“Arthur.”
He looked at me.
“You're on the list.”
He didn't speak.
“Why?”
Arthur slowly reached into his coat.
He pulled out a photograph.
The photograph showed Arthur, Robert, and Victor Hale.
Taken twenty-five years ago.
I looked at him.
“You knew Victor.”
“Yes.”
“You lied to me.”
“I protected you.”
“Who else is lying?”
Arthur's eyes filled with regret.
“Everyone.”
Then the vault door slammed shut.
We turned.
Locked.
A voice came through the intercom.
“Mrs. Whitmore.”
I recognized it.
Vanessa.
“You should have stayed in the motel.”
Arthur rushed toward the door.
“Open this!”
Vanessa laughed.
“You still don't understand.”
“What?”
“You weren't the target.”
I froze.
“What do you mean?”
Her voice became almost gentle.
“Robert was.”

Then came the final sentence.
“And he was never supposed to die in that hospital.”
