Chapter 4 - MY SON CAME FOR THE HOUSEThe next morning, Daniel arrived.

Not alone.

Vanessa came with him.

And so did a man I'd never seen before.

Arthur met them downstairs.

I watched from the penthouse security monitor.

Daniel looked nervous.

Vanessa looked confident.

The stranger looked bored.

“Who is that?” I asked.

Arthur's jaw tightened.

“His name is Michael Crane.”

“Lawyer?”

“Not exactly.”

“What does that mean?”

Arthur didn't answer.

The elevator doors opened.

Daniel stepped out.

“Mom?”

I stood behind the dining table.

He looked exhausted.

For one second, I saw the little boy who used to crawl into our bed during thunderstorms.

Then Vanessa stepped beside him.

The little boy disappeared.

“Mom,” Daniel said, “we need to talk.”

“We are talking.”

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“You're being difficult.”

I almost laughed.

“You threw me out of my home five days after my husband's funeral.”

“You were going to have to move eventually.”

“Why?”

“Because the house belongs to Daniel.”

I looked at my son.

“Does it?”

Daniel said nothing.

Michael Crane stepped forward.

“We have documents.”

Arthur interrupted.

“Documents you created after Robert's death.”

The man's expression did not change.

“We believe Mr. Whitmore intended—”

“No,” Arthur said.

“You don't know what he intended.”

Arthur smiled.

“I represented Robert for twenty-three years.”

The man stopped talking.

I looked at Daniel.

“Why did you do this?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Because Dad told me everything.”

My heart stopped.

“What did he tell you?”

“That the house would be mine.”

Arthur looked at him.

“When?”

“Before he died.”

“Exactly when?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Three weeks before.”

The same week Robert gave me the brass key.

I suddenly remembered something.

Robert had asked Daniel to visit him at the hospital.

Daniel had stayed forty minutes.

Then he had left furious.

I had never asked why.

“Daniel,” I said quietly, “what else did your father tell you?”

He looked at Vanessa.

She nodded.

“He said there was money.”

Arthur stepped between us.

“Enough.”

Vanessa snapped,

“Why are you hiding it?”

“Hiding what?”

“The trust.”

My entire body went cold.

Daniel stared at me.

“So it's true.”

Arthur cursed softly.

I realized then.

They hadn't known the details.

They had only suspected.

Until now.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“How much?”

I said nothing.

“How much did Robert leave you?”

I looked at my son.

“You told me you loved me.”

“I do.”

“Then why did you throw me out?”

Daniel's face crumpled.

For one second, he looked ashamed.

Then Vanessa touched his arm.

His expression hardened.

“You weren't going to tell us.”

“We weren't entitled to it.”

“We're your family.”

“No.”

I looked directly at Vanessa.

“You were my family.”

Silence.

Then Michael Crane placed a document on the table.

“This is a notice of intent to challenge the estate.”

Arthur picked it up.

“You can try.”

Michael smiled.

“We will.”

They turned toward the elevator.

Daniel stopped.

He looked back at me.

“Mom…”

I waited.

He whispered,

“You don't understand what Dad was involved in.”

The elevator doors opened.

“Neither do you,” I said.

The doors closed.

Arthur turned to me.

“That man's dangerous.”

“I know.”

Then he opened the document Michael had left behind.

His face changed.

“What?”

He handed it to me.

At the bottom was a signature.

Robert Whitmore.

But I knew that signature.

And this one was fake.

Arthur stared at it.

“They forged your husband's signature.”

I looked at the date.

Three days after Robert died.

A dead man had supposedly signed the document.

Then I noticed something even worse.

The document referenced a company I had never heard of.

BLACK HARBOR HOLDINGS.

Arthur whispered,

“That's impossible.”

“What?”

“Black Harbor was dissolved fifteen years ago.”

He looked up.

“Someone brought it back.”

And suddenly I understood.

My husband hadn't been hiding money.

He had been hiding a war.
