Chapter 16 - THE FINAL STAGEThe key led us to a bank in Switzerland.

I had never been there.
Robert had.
Of course he had.
Arthur warned me that opening the account could expose everything.
I didn't care anymore.
My son was in prison.
My husband had spent years lying to me.
Twenty-eight million dollars had vanished.
And someone was hunting me.
Fear had become a luxury I no longer had.
The vault opened.
Inside was a single file.
No money.
No documents.
Only a video.
I pressed play.
Victor Hale appeared.
He looked older.
Tired.
But alive.
“Mrs. Whitmore.”
I stared at the screen.
“You killed Robert.”
Victor smiled.
“No.”
“Then who did?”
“Robert.”
My heart stopped.
Victor leaned toward the camera.
“Your husband has spent forty years manipulating you.”
I wanted to stop the video.
I didn't.
“Why?”
“Because he needed a witness.”
“A witness to what?”
“The collapse of his own family.”
Victor revealed everything.
Robert had not merely infiltrated Black Harbor.
He had built part of it.
He had helped move money.
He had created false identities.
He had manipulated Daniel's records.
He had planted evidence.
All to dismantle the network.
But one thing had gone wrong.
Robert fell in love with me.
And that made me his weakness.
Victor smiled.
“You were never supposed to inherit the money.”
“Then why did I?”
“Because Robert changed the plan.”
He leaned closer.
“He chose you over the family.”
I looked at the screen.
“What happens now?”
Victor answered,
“Now you choose.”
A second document appeared.
One choice would unlock the $28 million.
The other would expose Black Harbor.
But I couldn't do both.
At the bottom was a countdown.
23:59:59.
Twenty-four hours.
Arthur stared.
“We need to think.”
“No.”
Robert looked at me.
“What are you going to do?”
I closed the file.
“Both.”
He frowned.
“That isn't possible.”
I smiled.
“For forty years, you thought you knew me.”
I picked up the brass key.
“You were wrong too.”
Arthur looked confused.
“What are you planning?”
I turned toward the vault.
“I'm going to empty the trust.”
“Where?”
“Into the hands of every person Black Harbor hurt.”
Robert stared at me.
“You'll expose yourself.”
“Yes.”
“You'll lose the money.”
“Yes.”
“You could become a target.”
I looked at him.
“I already am.”
Then I opened a hidden panel beneath the floor.
A second account appeared.
Robert's face went white.
“What is that?”
I looked at him.
“My account.”
“What account?”
“The one you never knew about.”
Arthur stared.
“How?”
I smiled faintly.
“Forty years of being married to a secretive man teaches a woman how to keep secrets.”
The balance appeared.
$41,700,000.
Robert stepped backward.
“Eleanor…”
I looked at him.
“This was never your plan.”
“No.”
I closed the vault.
“This is mine.”
Then the doors behind us opened.
FBI agents flooded the room.
And one man walked in behind them.
Victor Hale.
