Chapter 15 - THE NIGHT THE PENTHOUSE BURNEDThe penthouse was on fire when we arrived.

Smoke poured from the windows.

Fire crews surrounded the building.

Robert stood beside me, staring upward.

“That was the safest place I had.”

I looked at him.

“Not anymore.”

Arthur rushed over.

“The vault is gone.”

“What?”

“The wall was breached.”

“By whom?”

He handed me a photograph.

Victor Hale.

Standing inside the building.

I stared.

“Vanessa said he was dead.”

Robert looked confused.

“He should be.”

Then I saw something worse.

The photograph had been taken two hours ago.

Victor was alive.

And he was holding the red ledger.

Robert whispered,

“This isn't about the money anymore.”

“What is it about?”

“Control.”

The next morning, every bank account connected to the Whitmore family had been frozen.

Every property.

Every trust.

Everything.

Except one.

Mine.

Arthur showed me the screen.

“Your personal trust remains untouched.”

“Why?”

“Because it was never part of the network.”

I looked at Robert.

He nodded.

“That was the point.”

“What do I do with it?”

“Use it.”

“For what?”

“To destroy them.”

I stared.

“Destroy whom?”

He handed me a list.

Twenty-three names.

Judges.

Lawyers.

Bankers.

Politicians.

Executives.

Every person who had helped Black Harbor survive.

I looked at the last name.

Victor Hale.

Then beneath it was another name.

Robert Whitmore.

I looked at my husband.

“You put yourself on the list?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I was part of it.”

I felt the world shift.

“You were involved.”

“I was trying to dismantle it from the inside.”

“And if you failed?”

“I built the trust.”

I understood.

The money wasn't a reward.

It was leverage.

A weapon.

A shield.

A final move.

Then Arthur's phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What?”

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“The FBI has arrested Daniel.”

My heart stopped.

“Why?”

“They found the money in his account.”

“That isn't possible.”

“They say the transfer came from his device.”

Robert stepped forward.

“My son has been framed.”

Arthur nodded.

“Probably.”

“Then who moved the money?”

Arthur looked at the screen.

“One minute ago.”

A new transaction appeared.

Another transfer.

This time, all $28 million.

Sent to a numbered account.

Robert stared at it.

“That account belongs to Victor.”

I looked at him.

“Then what are we waiting for?”

Robert shook his head.

“You don't understand.”

“What?”

“The FBI doesn't know Victor is alive.”

“And now they do.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“They arrested Daniel because Victor wants you to go after him.”

“Why?”

Robert's voice became quiet.

“Because Victor wants you to open the final account.”

I remembered the brass key.

Number 28.

Arthur stared at it.

“And now that account has been activated.”

The key began to vibrate in my hand.

A tiny light appeared.

Green.

May you like

Then a message appeared on the screen.

FINAL STAGE INITIATED.
