Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEADArthur immediately dismissed the photograph as fake.

I didn't believe him.

The old man's eyes were unmistakable.

Robert had once shown me a photograph of his father.

The same face.

The same scar above the eyebrow.

The same cold expression.

Arthur sent the image to a private investigator.

The answer came in twenty minutes.

“It’s real.”

I stared at him.

“Where is he?”

“New York.”

“Where?”

“He's moving.”

Then Daniel said something that chilled me.

“He always does.”

I turned to him.

“You've seen him?”

“Once.”

“When?”

“Last year.”

I felt betrayed.

“You knew he was alive?”

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I saw a man outside my office. Dad later told me never to ask questions.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Dad said it would put you in danger.”

I closed my eyes.

Everything Robert had hidden suddenly looked different.

He hadn't been protecting money.

He had been protecting our lives.

Arthur found an address.

A private medical facility in Connecticut.

We drove there before dawn.

The building was empty.

No patients.

No staff.

Only security cameras.

Then a speaker came alive.

A man's voice.

Old.

Calm.

“Eleanor.”

I stopped.

“You've become very difficult to control.”

I stared at the camera.

“Show yourself.”

“You always had courage.”

“You killed my husband.”

A pause.

“No.”

“Then who did?”

“Robert died because he refused to obey me.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“It is the only answer you are going to receive.”

Arthur shouted,

“Where is Victor Hale?”

The old man laughed.

“Victor is dead.”

Daniel looked at me.

“What?”

The voice continued.

“He was never the enemy.”

I froze.

“Then who is?”

Another pause.

“Robert.”

I almost laughed.

“My husband spent his life protecting me.”

“From whom?”

“From you.”

The speaker went silent.

Then every screen in the building turned on.

Videos of Robert appeared.

Robert meeting Victor.

Robert meeting Arthur.

Robert meeting Vanessa.

Robert meeting the mysterious old man.

It looked like betrayal.

My entire life appeared to be a carefully constructed lie.

Daniel whispered,

“Mom…”

I couldn't answer.

Then the screen showed Robert alone.

He looked directly into the camera.

His face was exhausted.

“Eleanor, if they show you these recordings, do not believe what you see.”

My heart broke.

Robert continued.

“Everything I did was necessary.”

The video ended.

A second recording began.

This one showed me.

Twenty years younger.

Holding baby Daniel.

Standing beside Robert.

Then a man entered the room.

The old man.

He kissed Daniel's forehead.

I froze.

“I remember him.”

Arthur looked at me.

“You met him?”

I nodded slowly.

Robert had once introduced him as an old family friend.

I had never questioned it.

The speaker came alive again.

“You see, Eleanor?”

The old man's voice was almost tender.

“You have known me all along.”

Then the lights went out.

Daniel grabbed my hand.

Arthur whispered,

“Run.”

We ran outside.

But the car was gone.

In its place stood a black SUV.

Its rear door opened.

Inside was Vanessa.

She looked at me.

“You finally understand.”

Then she said,

“But you still don't know the worst part.”

She held up a photograph.

It showed Robert.

May you like

Alive.

Taken the day after his supposed death.
