Chapter 9 - Beneath the HouseThe old house stood at the edge of the city.

Empty.
Dark.
Silent.
Just like my childhood memories.
I had always thought of that house as ordinary.
Now every wall seemed to hide a secret.
The basement door creaked open.
Helena stayed upstairs with the investigators.
I descended alone.
The window Adrian had circled was sealed from the inside.
Behind it, I found a metal panel.
A key from Adrian's case opened it.
Inside was a narrow staircase.
I followed it downward.
At the bottom was a room.
Not a basement.
A bunker.
Monitors.
Servers.
Documents.
Photographs.
And one chair.
Someone had been working there recently.
On the main screen was my face.
A live feed.
I stared at it.
Then the screen changed.
A video appeared.
My grandfather.
Older than I remembered from photographs.
But unmistakably alive.
“My dear Meline.”
I sat down.
He looked directly into the camera.
“If you're watching this, then your mother failed.”
I felt my heart twist.
“She was told to protect you.”
The video continued.
“She chose power instead.”
I clenched my fists.
“My grandfather founded Black Ledger Holdings to safeguard Sentinel technology from people who wanted to weaponize it.”
He paused.
“When I realized I couldn't trust the people around me, I disappeared.”
He had gone underground.
For decades.
Watching.
Waiting.
Protecting something.
“But I made one mistake.”
He looked directly at the camera.
“I trusted your mother.”
My jaw tightened.
“She knew I was alive.”
Of course she did.
That explained everything.
Why she had always discouraged questions about my grandfather.
Why she reacted so strangely whenever I mentioned old family records.
Why she hated my company.
Why she had pushed me toward Jason.
My grandfather leaned closer to the camera.
“You were supposed to inherit Black Ledger.”
I stared.
“But only if you proved that you could identify betrayal.”
A cold realization spread through me.
The wedding wasn't the trap.
The entire last six years had been a test.
My company.
My career.
My relationship.
My family.
Everything.
Then the screen went black.
A second screen turned on.
Live footage.
Sydney.
She was standing in the kitchen at my parents' home.
Terrence was with her.
They were arguing.
Then the camera changed.
My mother entered.
She handed Sydney an envelope.
Sydney opened it.
Her face collapsed.
Terrence looked over her shoulder.
I couldn't hear the audio.
Helena called from upstairs.
“Meline!”
I ignored her.
The screen zoomed.
The envelope contained a photograph.
Of the baby's father.
Daniel.
But there was something else.
A second photograph.
Daniel standing beside Jason's father.
And behind them...
My mother.
They were much younger.
This wasn't a new conspiracy.
It went back decades.
Then the audio suddenly activated.
My mother's voice filled the room.
“You promised me you'd keep quiet.”
Daniel answered.
“You promised I'd get the company.”
My blood ran cold.
My mother said,
“Meridian Shield isn't yours.”
Daniel laughed.
“Not yet.”
Then Terrence shouted.
“What company?”
Everyone froze.
Sydney turned.
Terrence had heard everything.
My mother walked toward him.
“You don't understand.”
Terrence shook his head.
“I understand enough.”
Then he held up the photograph.
He looked at Sydney.
“Was our entire marriage a lie?”
Sydney cried.
“No.”
Terrence stared at her.
“Was our child?”
Sydney whispered,
“I don't know what I am anymore.”
I closed my eyes.
Then the live feed cut.
A message appeared on the screen.
COME TO THE HOUSE TONIGHT.
Underneath:
BRING NO ONE.
I looked toward the staircase.
Helena appeared.
“What happened?”
I turned the monitor toward her.
She read the message.
“No.”
I smiled.
“You already know I'm going.”
“Meline…”
“My whole life has been a lie.”
She stepped closer.
“You don't have to solve it tonight.”
“Yes.”
I looked at the dark screen.
“Because tomorrow, people will start disappearing.”
Helena's expression changed.
“Why?”
I pointed to the monitor.
“Because someone has already begun cleaning up the evidence.”
Then the lights went out.
Every monitor went black.
May you like
And somewhere upstairs...
a door slammed shut.
