Chapter 10 - The Betrayal Inside MeridianWhen the lights returned, Helena was gone.

I ran upstairs.

The investigators were searching the house.

One man was unconscious near the front entrance.

Another was missing.

Helena was nowhere.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Where is Helena?”

A man's voice replied.

“Safe.”

“Who are you?”

“Someone who knows you better than your family does.”

I recognized the voice.

Adrian.

“What did you do?”

“I protected her.”

“From what?”

“Your mother's next move.”

I froze.

“What does that mean?”

“She isn't trying to hurt you.”

“Then what?”

“She is trying to destroy your company.”

I looked through the window.

Across the street, a black SUV idled.

Adrian continued.

“She knows you have a backup system.”

“Every company does.”

“No.”

His voice sharpened.

“You built one no one else knows about.”

My blood ran cold.

The Shadow Vault.

A private recovery environment buried beneath Meridian Shield's infrastructure.

Only I knew the final key.

“She's looking for it.”

“Why?”

“Because Black Ledger needs Sentinel Protocol.”

I clenched my fists.

“And my grandfather?”

“Wants to stop them.”

“Then why did he manipulate all this?”

“Because your family has already been compromised.”

I stepped outside.

The SUV accelerated away.

I ran back inside.

My phone buzzed.

A message from the chief financial officer at Meridian Shield.

Meline, the board meeting has been called. Emergency vote.

Then another.

They're trying to remove you as CEO.

Then another.

Adrian's security credentials have been used to access the Shadow Vault.

I stared at the screen.

They were moving fast.

I called Meridian.

No answer.

I called my operations director.

Nothing.

Then my assistant answered, crying.

“Someone locked down the building.”

“Who?”

“Your mother.”

I closed my eyes.

She had moved beyond fraud.

She was taking control.

I drove back to headquarters.

By the time I arrived, the building was surrounded by private security.

Not police.

Not ours.

My mother's.

I walked toward the entrance.

A guard blocked me.

“This area is restricted.”

I smiled.

“I own this building.”

He didn't move.

Then a screen inside the lobby flickered on.

My mother appeared.

“Meline, go home.”

“No.”

“You don't understand.”

“I understand that you took control of my company.”

“I'm trying to save you.”

“You tried to steal twenty-eight million dollars from me.”

She sighed.

“You're obsessed with the wrong thing.”

“What do you want?”

Her eyes hardened.

“The Sentinel Protocol.”

I stared at her.

“You don't even know what it does.”

“I know enough.”

“No.”

She smiled.

“You think you're protecting the world.”

“I'm protecting people.”

“Then give it to me.”

“Why?”

“Because your grandfather was right.”

That stopped me.

She continued.

“There are people coming.”

“Who?”

“People your company cannot stop.”

She looked exhausted.

“I spent thirty years preparing for them.”

“Preparing what?”

“To hand them Sentinel.”

I felt sick.

“You were working for them?”

She said nothing.

That silence was the answer.

Then every screen in the lobby changed.

A countdown appeared.

59:59

I looked up.

“What is that?”

My mother whispered,

“The Shadow Vault is already open.”

My chest tightened.

“How?”

She smiled sadly.

“Because someone who knows you very well gave them the key.”

I turned.

Across the street stood Sydney.

She was crying.

Beside her stood Daniel.

And behind Daniel...

Jason.

He wasn't being arrested.

He wasn't afraid.

He was holding a device.

He looked directly at me.

Then he smiled.

And I finally understood.

May you like

Jason had never been the disposable tool.

He had been the inside man.
