Chapter 5 - The First CollapseThe room became completely silent.

My father was the first to speak.
“This is absurd.”
Helena slid a document across the table.
“Your name appears on multiple fraudulent financial submissions.”
“That doesn't prove anything.”
“It will.”
Jason looked at me.
“You did all this?”
I didn't answer.
He stepped closer.
“You married me just to set this up?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because you gave me every reason to.”
His face twisted.
“You don't understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
Helena began laying out the evidence.
Unauthorized credit inquiries.
Forged financial statements.
Modified corporate ownership records.
False declarations.
Electronic signatures.
Bank communications.
Everything.
My mother started crying again.
This time, there were no tears in my eyes.
My father pointed at Helena.
“Where did you get these?”
“Your systems.”
He went silent.
Jason stared at me.
“You hacked us?”
I laughed once.
“No.”
I looked at him.
“You were careless.”
That hurt him more than anger would have.
Because Jason had always believed he was smarter than everyone else.
He had spent months planning a sophisticated financial scheme.
And he had left fingerprints everywhere.
But then Sydney stood.
“I didn't know it would go this far.”
Terrence looked at her.
“What didn't?”
Sydney froze.
I had almost forgotten he was in the room.
He looked from her to me.
“What is she talking about?”
Sydney's eyes filled with tears.
Terrence stood.
“What's going on?”
Jason shouted,
“This doesn't concern you.”
Terrence looked at Sydney.
“Why not?”
She couldn't answer.
I watched my sister's hands.
They were trembling.
Terrence looked at her stomach.
Then back at me.
“What did she tell you?”
I didn't answer.
Sydney whispered,
“Terrence…”
He stepped toward her.
“Tell me.”
She started crying.
“I was going to.”
“When?”
“After the wedding.”
Terrence's face hardened.
“What were you going to tell me?”
Sydney couldn't speak.
My father cursed under his breath.
My mother said,
“Don't do this here.”
Terrence turned toward her.
“Don't do what?”
No one answered.
Then I made a decision.
I walked to the table.
I took out my phone.
I played the recording.
Sydney's voice echoed through the room.
“Terrence can't know yet.”
Then my mother's voice.
“He can wait.”
Terrence closed his eyes.
Jason stepped toward the phone.
“Turn that off.”
I didn't.
The recording continued.
Then Sydney's voice.
“It isn't his.”
Terrence stopped moving.
Every person in that room knew exactly what he had heard.
He opened his eyes.
They were empty.
He looked at Sydney.
“Is it true?”
She whispered,
“Yes.”
He stepped backward.
“How long?”
Sydney sobbed.
“Seven months.”
Terrence stared at her.
Seven months.
He had believed he was going to become a father.
He had painted the nursery.
He had told friends.
He had bought a tiny crib.
And all that time, the woman he trusted had known the truth.
He turned toward me.
“What are you going to do now?”
I thought about it.
Then I looked at Jason.
“The wedding continues.”
Terrence looked stunned.
“What?”
I straightened my dress.
“Everyone will leave this room eventually.”
Helena nodded.
“We're not finished.”
My father suddenly lunged toward the door.
The investigators stopped him.
He shouted.
“You can't treat me like a criminal!”
One of the investigators said calmly,
“Then stop behaving like one.”
My mother began screaming.
Sydney collapsed into a chair.
Jason just stood there.
He looked at me.
“You really hate me.”
I stared back.
“No.”
He looked confused.
“I don't have to hate you.”
I placed my wedding ring on the table.
“I just don't belong to you anymore.”
Then I walked out.
The ballroom was still full.
Guests were whispering.
Music was still playing.
People were smiling nervously.
They thought the ceremony had ended.
They were wrong.
I walked onto the stage.
Picked up the microphone.
And said,
“Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for coming.”
Every conversation stopped.
I smiled.
“The ceremony may be over.”
May you like
I looked toward the ballroom doors.
“But the truth is just getting started.”
