Chapter 12 - The GrandfatherEvery screen in the lobby came alive.

My grandfather appeared.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
My mother began crying.
“Father…”
He looked at her.
“You should have told her.”
My mother covered her mouth.
He turned toward me.
“Meline.”
I couldn't speak.
“You wanted to know why I disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“I discovered that Black Ledger had been infiltrated.”
“By whom?”
He looked at Daniel.
Then Jason.
Then my mother.
“By everyone.”
The room became silent.
“My daughter believed power could be controlled.”
My mother looked away.
“Jason's father believed it could be sold.”
Jason clenched his jaw.
“Daniel believed it could make him untouchable.”
Daniel said nothing.
“And Adrian…”
He paused.
“Adrian believed he could control both sides.”
I stared.
“But Adrian helped me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he realized too late what Black Ledger had become.”
I looked at the countdown.
“Then stop it.”
My grandfather smiled sadly.
“I already did.”
The countdown froze.
09:42
Everyone stared.
The system began reversing.
Files restored.
Security doors reopened.
External access terminated.
My mother's private security dropped their weapons.
The investigators moved immediately.
Jason turned toward me.
“You planned this.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“My grandfather did.”
He looked at the screen.
“Why use the wedding?”
My grandfather answered.
“Because betrayal reveals itself best when people believe they're celebrating.”
I felt tears finally rise in my eyes.
Not from pain.
From understanding.
He had been watching.
Testing.
Waiting.
And still, he had let me suffer.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
His face softened.
“Because the first person I trusted after you were born was your mother.”
He looked down.
“She taught me that love without discernment can become a weapon.”
I swallowed.
“You let me think I was alone.”
“I thought you needed to become strong enough to choose who deserved your trust.”
I looked at my family.
“You were wrong.”
“Yes.”
He smiled.
“You were supposed to discover something else.”
“What?”
“That you don't need us.”
That sentence broke something inside me.
My grandfather continued.
“Your company is yours.”
“The technology?”
“Yours to protect.”
“The trust?”
“Yours.”
“The truth?”
He looked directly into my eyes.
“Finally yours.”
The screen behind him changed.
A document appeared.
My mother's signature.
Jason's father's signature.
Daniel's.
Adrian's.
And one more.
Sydney's.
My sister stared at it.
“I didn't sign that.”
My grandfather spoke.
“You signed a cooperation agreement seven years ago.”
Sydney went pale.
“What?”
“You thought it was employment paperwork.”
She looked at my mother.
“You knew?”
My mother closed her eyes.
That answer was enough.
Sydney collapsed.
Terrence caught her.
He looked at the document.
Then at me.
“Does this ever stop?”
I looked at the screen.
“No.”
Not yet.
Because my grandfather wasn't finished.
“There is one final problem.”
I stared.
“What?”
He looked at me.
“The person who activated the Black Ledger protocol wasn't Jason.”
I turned toward him.
“Then who?”
My grandfather's face became serious.
“He is still inside Meridian Shield.”
The room went silent.
“Who?”
My grandfather said a name.
The name belonged to the one person I had trusted more than anyone.
My chief financial officer.
The man who had warned me about the emergency board vote.
The man who had supposedly been helping me.
He had been helping Black Ledger.
And now he was gone.

But he had left one message.
Come to the original server room. Alone.
