Chapter 13 - The Last BetrayerThe original Meridian server room had been sealed for years.

My grandfather had designed it.
I had never even known it existed.
I entered alone.
The door opened with my fingerprint.
Inside, the lights flickered.
Rows of old servers stood beneath dust-covered ceilings.
Then I heard footsteps.
My CFO stepped from the shadows.
Victor Hale.
I stared at him.
“You.”
He nodded.
“You finally came.”
“Why?”
“Because your grandfather wouldn't give me what I wanted.”
“What did you want?”
“Control.”
I laughed.
“Over my company?”
“Over the technology.”
“Why?”
He smiled.
“Because technology doesn't care who deserves power.”
He opened a console.
“Sentinel can predict cyberattacks.”
“Yes.”
“But it can also predict markets.”
I froze.
“No.”
“Yes.”
He turned.
“Your grandfather never told you the full capability.”
I stepped closer.
“You're lying.”
“Then look.”
He activated the screen.
Market movement.
Political instability.
Infrastructure failures.
Supply chain disruptions.
Everything predicted months in advance.
I felt sick.
“Sentinel was never just cybersecurity.”
“No.”
He looked at me.
“It was designed to model human systems.”
A cold realization spread through me.
Wars.
Markets.
Elections.
Energy grids.
Financial systems.
Sentinel could anticipate cascading failures before anyone else saw them.
Whoever controlled it could manipulate the world without firing a shot.
Victor smiled.
“That is why everyone wanted you.”
“My family?”
“Pawns.”
“Jason?”
“Useful.”
“Adrian?”
“Complicated.”
“Your grandfather?”
“Obsessed.”
“And me?”
He stepped closer.
“The key.”
I looked at the server.
“How do I stop you?”
“You can't.”
He pressed a button.
The system began uploading.
Then my phone rang.
My grandfather.
“Don't touch the console.”
I froze.
Victor smiled.
“He's too late.”
My grandfather said,
“Meline, listen carefully.”
“What?”
“You are the only one who can shut down Sentinel.”
“I need the authentication.”
“You are the authentication.”
Victor lunged.
I stepped back.
The room erupted in chaos.
The investigators rushed in.
Victor tried to destroy the server.
I grabbed his wrist.
He stared at me.
“You don't understand what you're stopping.”
“I understand exactly.”
“You could control everything.”
“No.”
I looked directly at him.
“That is exactly why I won't.”
The security team restrained him.
The upload stopped.
The server went dark.
Silence.
Then Helena walked in.
She looked exhausted.
“It's over.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
She frowned.
I pointed toward the screen.
A single file remained.
SENTINEL / FINAL OWNER
My grandfather's name disappeared.
Mine appeared.
The system asked one question.
ACTIVATE LEGACY PROTOCOL?
Helena looked at me.
“What does that mean?”
I didn't know.
Then the phone rang again.
My grandfather.
“This is the choice I was trying to prepare you for.”
“What happens if I activate it?”
“You'll learn everything.”
“And if I don't?”
“You can walk away.”
I stared at the screen.
After everything my family had done, walking away sounded beautiful.
Simple.
Clean.
But then I thought about all the people who could be harmed if Sentinel fell into the wrong hands.
I pressed the button.
ACTIVATE.
The screen flashed.
Thousands of encrypted files unlocked.
Names.
Transactions.
Organizations.
Governments.
Corporations.
Every secret Black Ledger had collected.
It wasn't just our family.
It was the world.
I turned to Helena.
“What did I just do?”
She looked at the screen.
“You opened the largest intelligence archive on Earth.”
Then one final file appeared.
Its title was different from all the others.
It was personal.
MELINE GRANT / BIRTH RECORD
I stared.
My mother's name was listed.
My father's name was listed.
Then a third name appeared.
Not my father.
My mother had lied about my birth.
May you like
And the man listed as my biological father was someone I had never met.
Someone who was still alive.
