CHAPTER 8: THE DETECTIVE WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

For three seconds, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Lily.
Not Detective Collins.
The entire room felt frozen.
Like time itself had stopped to watch what happened next.
My eyes stayed on her hand.
The black stain on her fingers.
Ink.
Fresh ink.
The same ink that appeared on the last page of Anna's journal.
The page where her name was written.
Detective Sarah Collins.
The woman who had helped me uncover the truth.
The woman who had arrested Evelyn.
The woman who had exposed Michael.
The woman I trusted.
She slowly closed the journal.
Too slowly.
Like someone who knew the moment had already passed.
"Daniel..."
I stepped between her and Lily.
"Don't move."
Her expression changed.
Not anger.
Not panic.
Something worse.
Disappointment.
Like she had expected this day to come eventually.
"You think I wrote that?"
I didn't answer.
Because I didn't know what to think anymore.
Everyone I trusted had a secret.
Everyone who promised to protect Lily had an agenda.
"Why is your name there?"
Detective Collins looked at the journal.
Then back at me.
"Because Anna knew."
"Knew what?"
"That I was involved."
The answer hit harder than I expected.
Lily grabbed my shirt.
"Dad?"
I looked down.
Her face was confused.
She didn't understand why another adult was becoming a threat.
I hated that.
I hated that the world kept forcing my daughter to learn things children shouldn't know.
"Take Lily downstairs," I said to the officer near the door.
The officer nodded.
But Lily refused to move.
"No."
She held my hand tighter.
"I'm staying."
I looked at her.
"Lily."
"I know what happened."
Her voice was small.
"But every time people tell me to leave..."
She swallowed.
"Something bad happens."
Those words destroyed me.
Because she was right.
The adults always moved her away from the truth.
And the truth always found her anyway.
I knelt beside her.
"Stay with the officer. Five minutes."
She looked at me.
"Promise?"
I nodded.
"I promise."
Only after she left did I turn back.
"Explain."
Detective Collins sat down.
She didn't reach for her weapon.
She didn't try to escape.
That somehow made it worse.
"Anna contacted me six months before she died."
I stared.
"What?"
"She found my name through someone she trusted."
"Who?"
"Rachel."
Everything connected again.
Rachel.
Anna.
Detective Collins.
Another hidden piece.
"Why would Anna contact a detective?"
"Because she knew the police couldn't protect her."
I frowned.
"Why?"
Detective Collins looked away.
"Because someone inside the department was helping Michael."
My stomach tightened.
"Who?"
She didn't answer.
Instead, she opened her phone.
She showed me an old message.
The sender was Anna.
The receiver was Sarah Collins.
The date was six months before Anna died.
Anna:
If something happens to me, don't trust anyone connected to the investigation.
I looked up.
"You knew Anna?"
"Yes."
"How?"
Detective Collins took a breath.
"Before I became a detective, I worked as a private investigator."
I frowned.
"And?"
"I investigated financial fraud involving Evelyn Hart."
My eyes narrowed.
"Evelyn?"
"Yes."
She looked at the journal.
"Anna hired me."
The room became silent.
"She hired you?"
"She suspected Evelyn was stealing from the family trust."
I remembered the documents.
The money.
The transfers.
"But why hide this from me?"
Detective Collins looked at me.
"Because Anna asked me to."
The answer hurt.
Again.
Everyone had been protecting me by lying to me.
"She thought I couldn't handle the truth?"
"No."
Detective Collins shook her head.
"She thought Michael would hurt Lily if he knew you were investigating."
I looked toward the hallway where Lily had gone.
"What did Anna find?"
Detective Collins hesitated.
Then said:
"Michael wasn't the mastermind."
My blood ran cold.
"What?"
"He was a piece."
"A piece?"
She nodded.
"Michael was obsessed with Anna. Evelyn was obsessed with money."
"Then who controlled them?"
Detective Collins looked at the journal.
"The person Anna feared most."
I waited.
"Who?"
She didn't answer immediately.
Then she said:
"Anna's father."
I froze.
"What?"
"Victor Moore."
Anna's father had died five years ago.
Before Lily was born.
Before everything.
"That's impossible."
Detective Collins shook her head.
"His death certificate was fake."
I couldn't breathe.
"What are you saying?"
"I'm saying Anna's father is alive."
The room spun.
Another dead person.
Another impossible secret.
First Rachel was supposed to be gone.
Now Anna's father.
How many ghosts had been hiding around me?
"Where is he?"
Detective Collins looked at me.
"That's the problem."
"What?"
"He disappeared after Anna died."
"Convenient."
"Very."
She opened another file.
Inside were photos.
A man.
Older.
Gray hair.
Sharp eyes.
I recognized him.
Not because I had met him.
Because Anna had shown me pictures.
Her father.
Victor Moore.
The man she stopped speaking to years before we married.
The man she said had destroyed her childhood.
"What does he want with Lily?"
Detective Collins was quiet.
Then:
"Control."
I looked at her.
"Everyone wants control."
"Because Lily isn't just an inheritance."
"What else?"
She pointed to the journal.
"Anna discovered Victor had created a legal trust before Lily was born."
I frowned.
"Why?"
"Because he believed Lily would become the heir to everything."
"Everything?"
"His company. His properties. His entire fortune."
I shook my head.
"But Anna hated him."
"Yes."
"Then why would he involve Lily?"
Detective Collins looked at me.
"Because Victor believed children belong to bloodlines."
The same words Michael used.
Love doesn't change blood.
My stomach turned.
They all believed the same thing.
A sound came from upstairs.
A crash.
My heart stopped.
"Lily."
I ran.
Detective Collins followed.
We reached the hallway.
The officer who was supposed to watch Lily was unconscious on the floor.
The room door was open.
"Lily!"
No answer.
My entire body went cold.
I rushed inside.
The room was empty.
The window was open.
The curtains moved in the wind.
Then I saw something on the bed.
A small pink journal.
The same journal.
Except now there was a new page inside.
A page I had never seen before.
My hands shook as I opened it.
The handwriting wasn't Anna's.
It wasn't Lily's.
It was new.
Fresh.
The message was short.
Daniel,
You keep searching for the people who betrayed you.
But you never asked the most important question.
Who taught them how?
Below it was a symbol.
A symbol I recognized.
Because Anna had drawn it in her old photographs.
A circle.
With a line through the center.
Detective Collins saw it.
And for the first time since I met her...
She looked afraid.
"Daniel..."
"What?"
Her voice dropped.
"That symbol belongs to a group."
"What group?"
She stared at the empty room.
"The group that has been protecting Victor Moore for twenty years."
I looked at the open window.
At the missing place where my daughter had been.
Then Detective Collins whispered the words that made my blood run cold.
"They don't want Lily's money."
A pause.
May you like
"They want Lily herself."
