CHAPTER 12: THE BOY WHO DISAPPEARED BEFORE LILY WAS BORN

The name stared back at me.

Ethan.

One word.

One name.

But somehow it felt heavier than every secret I had uncovered.

I looked at Detective Collins.

She looked back at me.

Neither of us spoke.

Because we both understood the same thing.

Anna had hidden another child.

Before Lily.

Before the accident.

Before everything.

"Who is Ethan?"

My voice sounded distant.

Like someone else was asking the question.

Detective Collins picked up the envelope.

She examined it carefully.

"No address."

"No explanation."

"Just a name."

I looked toward the door where Victor had disappeared.

"He knew."

Detective Collins nodded.

"Victor knew about Ethan."

"Then why didn't he mention him?"

She didn't answer.

Because that was the terrifying part.

Victor had controlled every conversation.

Every revelation.

He wanted us to discover things in a certain order.

Which meant there were still things he didn't want us to know.

We returned to the police station.

The search for Lily continued.

Every officer in the city was looking.

Every camera.

Every road.

Every possible location.

But Victor was prepared.

He had disappeared like smoke.

No phone signal.

No vehicle record.

No witnesses.

Nothing.

Just like everyone else connected to Anna's secrets.

They didn't disappear.

They erased themselves.

Detective Collins sat across from me.

"We need to find Ethan."

"Why?"

"Because Anna believed he was important enough to mention in her final message."

I stared at the name.

"Could he be another child Victor took?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"How do you know?"

"Because of the records."

She placed a file in front of me.

"Before Lily was born, Anna worked with a child protection organization."

I frowned.

"I didn't know that."

"Most people didn't."

I opened the file.

Anna's name appeared on several documents.

Adoption cases.

Missing children.

Family investigations.

Then one case caught my attention.

A boy.

Age four.

Name:

Ethan Moore.

I froze.

"Moore?"

Detective Collins nodded.

"Victor's last name."

I looked at the file.

"Ethan was his son?"

"No."

She pointed to the details.

"Victor adopted him."

My stomach tightened.

"Why?"

The answer came from the file.

Adoption terminated after reports of abuse and psychological manipulation.

I couldn't breathe.

"Anna knew about this?"

"Yes."

"She helped him?"

Detective Collins nodded.

"According to the records, Anna tried to remove Ethan from Victor's custody."

My eyes moved through the pages.

Then I saw the date.

The case closed.

The child disappeared.

The official conclusion:

Transferred to another guardian.

But the guardian's name was blacked out.

"Who took Ethan?"

Detective Collins looked at me.

"That's what we need to find out."

That night, another message arrived.

Not from Victor.

From Lily.

A video.

I opened it immediately.

My daughter appeared on screen.

She was sitting at a table.

She looked tired.

But calm.

"Dad."

My eyes filled.

"Lily."

I reached toward the screen.

"I miss you."

She smiled sadly.

"I miss you too."

A man's voice spoke from behind the camera.

"Tell him."

Lily looked down.

"I found the picture."

My heart stopped.

"What picture?"

"The one Mom gave me."

She looked toward the camera.

"It wasn't really a picture."

I frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Lily swallowed.

"It's a map."

A map?

The room went silent.

"What kind of map?"

"I don't know."

She looked scared.

"But Mom told me something."

"What?"

Lily whispered:

"She said if anyone tried to take me..."

A pause.

"That means they found Ethan."

My blood turned cold.

The video ended.

Detective Collins replayed the message.

Three times.

"She knows more than we thought."

I stared at the frozen image of Lily.

"She's eight years old."

"I know."

"She shouldn't have to carry this."

"I know."

I looked at her.

"Then help me get her back."

Detective Collins nodded.

"We will."

Then she paused.

"But Daniel..."

"What?"

"If Anna involved Lily in this, there was a reason."

I shook my head.

"No."

She looked at me.

"You don't know that."

"I know Anna."

I looked at the screen.

"She would never put Lily in danger."

Detective Collins was quiet.

Then she said:

"Maybe she didn't."

A pause.

"Maybe she knew the danger was already coming."

We searched Anna's old files again.

This time looking for Ethan.

Not Lily.

Not Michael.

Not Evelyn.

Ethan.

After hours, we found something.

A photograph.

A young boy.

Standing beside Anna.

He looked about five years old.

Behind him was a building.

The same symbol was painted on the wall.

The circle.

The line.

I looked closer.

There was writing underneath.

A name.

The Legacy Foundation.

Detective Collins went silent.

"What?"

She looked disturbed.

"You know this?"

"I thought it was gone."

"What is it?"

She took a breath.

"An organization created by wealthy families."

"To help children?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"Then what?"

Her voice became quieter.

"To preserve bloodlines."

My stomach turned.

"Explain."

"They believed certain families should control their descendants."

I stared.

"That's insane."

"Yes."

"Then why did it exist?"

"Because powerful people funded it."

I looked at the photograph.

"And Victor was part of it."

Detective Collins nodded.

"Victor wasn't the leader."

My heart sank.

"Then who was?"

She opened an old document.

The founder's name was written at the top.

I read it.

And every piece of the puzzle suddenly shifted.

Because the founder wasn't Victor.

It wasn't Evelyn.

It wasn't Michael.

It was someone I knew.

Someone who had been close to Anna.

Someone who had been helping me.

Someone who had been searching for Lily beside me.

My hands went cold.

"No..."

Detective Collins looked at me.

"You know the name?"

I stared at the paper.

The founder of The Legacy Foundation.

The person who had built the entire system.

The person Anna feared.

The person who connected every secret.

Rachel Moore.

I couldn't breathe.

Rachel.

The woman who claimed she was protecting Anna.

The woman who claimed she was protecting Lily.

The woman who had led me to the truth.

But now I had to ask the question I was terrified to answer.

Was Rachel my ally?

Or had she been guiding me exactly where she wanted me to go?

Before I could process it, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman's voice.

Not Victor.

Not Michael.

Rachel.

"Daniel."

My blood ran cold.

"Where are you?"

A pause.

Then she whispered:

"Running."

"From who?"

Her voice trembled.

"From the people who know I found Ethan."

I stood frozen.

"Rachel..."

"Listen to me carefully."

Her breathing became faster.

"Do not trust the person who created the foundation."

I looked at the document.

At her name.

"Why?"

Silence.

Then:

"Because that person is not Rachel Moore."

The line went dead.

I stared at Detective Collins.

"What does that mean?"

She looked at the phone.

And slowly said:

"Daniel..."

May you like

"Your Rachel may not be the real Rachel."
