CHAPTER 15: THE WOMAN WHO NEVER LEFT

For two years, I had lived with one certainty.
Anna was gone.
I built my entire life around that pain.
I learned how to wake up without hearing her voice.
How to make breakfast without her standing beside me.
How to answer Lily's questions when she asked why other children had mothers and she didn't.
I buried my wife.
I mourned her.
I carried her memory like a wound that never closed.
And now my son was standing in front of me, telling me the impossible.
Anna is alive.
My mind rejected it.
My heart wanted to believe it.
Those two parts of me started fighting.
"Say that again."
My voice barely worked.
Ethan looked at me.
"Mom is alive."
The church was silent.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then Victoria laughed.
A quiet laugh.
Almost amused.
"You still don't understand what she did, Daniel."
I turned toward her.
"Where is Anna?"
Victoria's smile disappeared.
"She chose her path."
"Where is she?"
My voice became louder.
Victoria looked at Ethan.
Then Lily.
Then me.
"Ask your son."
Everyone looked at Ethan.
The boy who had just entered my life.
The boy who had carried a secret bigger than himself.
I knelt beside him.
"Ethan."
He looked nervous.
"Where is your mom?"
He looked at Victoria.
Then at Emily.
Then back at me.
"She told me not to tell anyone until I met you."
My heart broke.
"Why?"
"Because she said people were watching."
"Who?"
Ethan swallowed.
"Everyone."
Detective Collins stepped forward.
"Ethan, we need to leave this place."
But Ethan didn't move.
"She said you would say that."
Detective Collins froze.
"What?"
Ethan reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small object.
An old voice recorder.
My heart stopped.
Anna.
Her handwriting was on the side.
For Daniel.
My hands shook as I took it.
I pressed play.
Static.
Then...
Her voice.
The sound I hadn't heard in two years.
"Daniel."
Everything inside me broke.
I closed my eyes.
Anna.
Alive in a recording.
Speaking to me.
"If you are hearing this, then everything I feared happened."
My breathing stopped.
"You found Lily."
A pause.
"You found Ethan."
I looked at my son.
He was crying silently.
Anna continued.
"I am sorry."
Those two words hurt more than anything.
"I am sorry I left you with questions."
"I am sorry I made you believe I was gone."
"But I had no choice."
The recording crackled.
"Victoria found out about Ethan."
My fists tightened.
"She knew he was not just an heir."
"She knew he was the evidence."
Evidence.
Of what?
Anna continued.
"The Legacy Foundation was never about protecting families."
"It was about controlling them."
A pause.
"Children were created, moved, hidden, and traded between powerful families."
My stomach turned.
"They believed blood was ownership."
Her voice became emotional.
"I spent years trying to destroy them."
"And when I got close..."
Silence.
"That was when they came for me."
I looked at Victoria.
She looked angry now.
Not afraid.
Angry.
Anna continued.
"Daniel, if you are listening..."
"I need you to understand something."
My hand tightened around the recorder.
"Lily is your daughter."
"Ethan is your son."
"Both of them."
"Not because of DNA."
"Because you loved them before you knew the truth."
A tear escaped before I could stop it.
Anna knew.
She knew exactly what I needed to hear.
Then her voice changed.
More serious.
"There is one person you cannot trust."
Everyone became still.
I looked around.
Who?
"Not Victoria."
My heart stopped.
"Not Michael."
"Not Evelyn."
A pause.
"The person who helped me hide Ethan."
My eyes moved toward Emily.
Then Detective Collins.
Anna continued.
"The person who knows where I am."
The recorder crackled.
Then:
"Is the person who killed me."
The room exploded into silence.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because Anna's words changed everything.
Someone here knew where she was.
Someone here had helped her.
Someone here had betrayed her.
Detective Collins immediately looked around.
"Everyone stay where you are."
Her hand moved toward her weapon.
Victoria smiled.
"You finally understand."
I looked at her.
"Understand what?"
"That the enemy isn't always the person who hurts you."
Her eyes moved.
Toward someone behind me.
I slowly turned.
Emily.
Her face was pale.
"No."
She whispered.
"No, Anna..."
I stepped back.
"Emily?"
She looked at me.
Tears filled her eyes.
"I can explain."
My heart sank.
Those words.
Everyone who betrayed someone said those words.
"Explain."
Emily looked at the recorder.
"Anna was my friend."
"Then why did she say you killed her?"
Emily closed her eyes.
"Because she thought I did."
The answer made no sense.
"What does that mean?"
Emily looked broken.
"It means I was there."
"When Anna died?"
She nodded.
"Yes."
My stomach tightened.
"Then you lied."
"No."
Her voice cracked.
"I thought she was dead."
Everyone froze.
"What?"
Emily looked at me.
"Daniel..."
She whispered:
"Anna didn't disappear after the accident."
"She was taken."
"By who?"
Emily looked at Victoria.
Then said:
"By me."
The room went silent.
I couldn't understand.
"You took Anna?"
Emily nodded.
"But I didn't kill her."
"Why would you take her?"
"Because she asked me to."
Nobody spoke.
The answer was impossible.
Anna asked her?
"Why?"
Emily looked at the recorder.
"Because Anna knew she couldn't defeat Victoria alone."
She stepped closer.
"She needed someone to disappear."
My heart pounded.
"Disappear?"
Emily nodded.
"Anna had to become dead."
"Why?"
"Because the Legacy Foundation only stops chasing people who no longer exist."
I stared.
"So Anna has been alive this whole time?"
Emily looked down.
"Yes."
"Where?"
Before she could answer...
The lights went out.
Again.
A gunshot echoed.
Everyone screamed.
When the emergency lights returned...
Emily was gone.
Victoria was gone.
And on the floor was the recorder.
Broken.
Beside it was a note.
Not from Victoria.
Not from Emily.
From Anna.
Three words.
Find me, Daniel.
My hands trembled.
Because for the first time in two years...
I wasn't searching for the truth.
I was searching for my wife.
The woman I buried.
May you like
The woman who might still be alive.
