CHAPTER 7: THE JOURNAL THAT WAS NEVER LOST

Michael's arrest should have made me feel relieved.

It didn't.

I thought seeing him in handcuffs would erase the fear.

The anger.

The questions.

Instead, it created more.

Because as the police car disappeared into the night, one sentence kept repeating inside my head.

The journal was never lost.

Michael knew where it was.

Anna knew where it was.

Rachel knew about it.

Everyone knew something except me.

The person who was supposed to be protected from the truth was the only person who didn't know it existed.

Me.

The next morning, Detective Collins sat across from me in the hospital cafeteria.

Neither of us touched our coffee.

"Michael is being held for questioning," she said.

"For what charges?"

"At minimum, conspiracy, obstruction, and possible involvement in Anna's death."

"Possible?"

She looked at me carefully.

"Daniel, we still need evidence."

I looked away.

"I have his confession."

"No."

I frowned.

"He said Lily was his."

"That's not a confession to murder."

I hated that she was right.

The law needed facts.

Not feelings.

Not betrayal.

Not the sick realization that my own brother had been watching my family fall apart.

"We need the journal," Detective Collins said.

I looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because Anna believed it contained the truth."

I remembered her words.

The truth is inside the journal.

"But we don't have it."

Detective Collins leaned forward.

"Are you sure?"

I stared at her.

"What do you mean?"

"Think carefully, Daniel."

She opened her notebook.

"Who had access to Lily's journal?"

I answered immediately.

"Lily."

"Who else?"

I thought.

"Me."

"Anyone else?"

I shook my head.

Then stopped.

Because suddenly I remembered.

A small detail.

Something I had ignored.

"Evelyn."

Detective Collins looked up.

"Why?"

"She gave Lily the journal."

"When?"

"Two years ago."

I swallowed.

"It was after Anna died."

The memory returned.

The funeral was over.

The house was full of people.

Everyone was trying to help.

Evelyn came into Lily's room with a small gift box.

Inside was a pink journal.

She told Lily:

"Every little girl needs somewhere to keep her secrets."

At the time, I thought it was kind.

Now...

Everything looked different.

"She planted it."

Detective Collins nodded slowly.

"Maybe."

"But why would Evelyn give Lily something that contained evidence against them?"

"Because maybe she didn't know what was inside."

I looked at her.

"Or maybe she did."

We returned to my house.

The police had already searched it once.

But now we searched differently.

Not for a missing object.

For a hidden message.

Lily sat at the kitchen table, drawing quietly.

I didn't want to involve her.

Not anymore.

She had already been through enough.

But then she looked up.

"Dad?"

"Yeah?"

"Are you looking for my journal?"

I froze.

"How did you know?"

She shrugged.

"Because Uncle Michael asked me about it."

Detective Collins turned immediately.

"When?"

Lily thought.

"A few weeks ago."

My stomach tightened.

"What did he ask?"

She looked uncomfortable.

"He asked if Mom ever wrote inside it."

I walked closer.

"What did you say?"

"I said no."

"Why?"

"Because I never read the last pages."

I felt a chill.

"The last pages?"

Lily nodded.

"Mom told me not to read them until I was older."

The room became silent.

Detective Collins exchanged a look with me.

"Lily."

My daughter looked at her.

"Where is the journal now?"

She pointed upstairs.

"In my room."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

"I didn't lose it."

She looked confused.

"It's under my bed."

Nobody moved.

Because that was impossible.

I had searched Lily's room.

The police had searched Lily's room.

Someone had broken into my house looking for that journal.

And yet it was still there.

We ran upstairs.

Lily crawled under her bed and pulled out a small pink notebook.

The cover was scratched.

The edges were worn.

But it was real.

The journal.

The thing everyone had been fighting over.

Lily handed it to me.

"Mom said it was important."

I held it carefully.

Almost afraid to open it.

Because what if this was the moment everything changed forever?

What if the truth inside destroyed the last good memories I had?

Detective Collins nodded.

"Open it."

I turned the first page.

Most of it was childish.

Drawings.

Small stories.

Things a mother would write with her daughter.

But near the back...

The handwriting changed.

It was Anna's.

The first page contained a date.

Eight years ago.

The year Lily was born.

I read the first sentence.

Daniel, if you are reading this, I need you to understand one thing.

My hands trembled.

You are Lily's father.

I stopped.

My eyes burned.

The next sentence:

Not because of DNA. Because you chose her before you even knew the truth.

I closed my eyes.

A wave of emotion hit me.

For eight years, I had feared one thing.

That Anna had betrayed me.

That Lily wasn't really mine.

But Anna had known exactly what she was doing.

She continued:

Michael will try to convince you that blood matters more than love.

He is wrong.

A father is not the person who creates a child.

A father is the person who stays.

I couldn't continue for several seconds.

Because those words were from Anna.

And somehow, she was still protecting me.

Even after death.

I turned the page.

The tone changed.

The warmth disappeared.

This was the part Anna was afraid someone would find.

Michael knows Lily exists.

He knows she is his biological daughter.

But he does not know the full truth.

I frowned.

Full truth?

I kept reading.

The DNA test was altered.

My heart stopped.

"What?"

Detective Collins looked at me.

"What does it say?"

I handed her the journal.

She read silently.

Then her expression changed.

"Daniel..."

"What?"

She looked at me.

"Anna says Michael is not Lily's biological father."

The room went completely silent.

I stared at the page.

Impossible.

Rachel said Michael was.

Michael believed he was.

Anna said something else.

The next sentence explained everything.

Michael was manipulated into believing Lily was his child.

I felt dizzy.

Someone had lied.

Someone had created this entire nightmare around a false belief.

But why?

I kept reading.

The person who changed the DNA results is the person who started this entire plan.

Below that was a name.

A name I didn't expect.

A name that made my blood freeze.

Because it wasn't Evelyn.

It wasn't Michael.

It wasn't Rachel.

It was someone who had been helping us since the beginning.

Someone who had promised to protect Lily.

The person Anna trusted with her final secret.

Detective Sarah Collins.

I looked up.

Slowly.

Detective Collins was still holding the journal.

Her face had lost all color.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Lily's voice came from behind us.

"Dad?"

I turned.

"Yeah?"

She pointed toward Detective Collins.

"Why does that woman have Mom's handwriting on her hands?"

My heart stopped.

Because Detective Collins looked down.

And I saw it.

A small stain.

Black ink.

Fresh ink.

She hadn't just read Anna's journal.

May you like

She had written something inside it.
