CHAPTER 14: THE CHILD DANIEL NEVER KNEW EXISTED

The word echoed through the abandoned church.
Son.
I felt like the ground beneath me had disappeared.
A son.
A child I never knew existed.
A child Anna never told me about.
A child hidden behind every secret.
Every lie.
Every death.
I looked at Victoria Hale.
Waiting for her to laugh.
Waiting for her to admit this was another manipulation.
She didn't.
Because she enjoyed watching the truth hurt.
"You're lying."
My voice was quiet.
But even I didn't believe the confidence behind it.
Victoria tilted her head.
"Do you think Anna would tell you everything?"
I said nothing.
Because the answer was already painful.
No.
Anna had hidden things.
Important things.
Dangerous things.
But this?
A child?
Impossible.
"Anna never had another child."
Victoria smiled.
"That is what she wanted you to believe."
Emily stepped forward.
"Don't listen to her."
Victoria looked at Emily.
"Still protecting him?"
Emily's face tightened.
"You destroyed enough lives."
Victoria laughed softly.
"Destroyed?"
She looked around the church.
"No, Emily."
"I preserved something."
Her eyes returned to me.
"The Moore bloodline."
I felt sick.
"Everyone keeps talking about blood."
Victoria smiled.
"Because blood remembers."
"People don't belong to families because of DNA."
Her expression changed.
"That is exactly why Anna was weak."
Detective Collins moved closer.
"Victoria Hale, you are under arrest."
Victoria didn't even look at her.
"You still don't understand."
"What?"
"You think this is about crime."
She smiled.
"It's about history."
Nobody moved.
Victoria continued.
"For generations, powerful families have protected their legacy."
She pointed toward me.
"Anna destroyed that."
"She chose love over blood."
Her eyes narrowed.
"And she paid for it."
My fists tightened.
"You killed her."
Victoria didn't answer.
That was the closest thing to a confession.
"Where is Lily?"
The question cut through everything.
Victoria looked at me.
"Safe."
"Where?"
"With Ethan."
My heart stopped.
"Ethan is real?"
"Yes."
"Where is my daughter?"
Victoria smiled.
"Before I answer, you need to understand something."
I hated that sentence.
Every time someone said it, another part of my life collapsed.
"What?"
Victoria stepped closer.
"The child you thought was your first..."
She looked at me.
"Was actually your second."
My breathing stopped.
The memory came back.
Eight years ago.
Before Lily.
Before Anna's death.
Before everything.
Anna had told me she lost a pregnancy.
A miscarriage.
She had cried for weeks.
I remembered holding her.
Telling her we would try again.
I remembered the pain.
The sadness.
But Victoria's words suggested something else.
"You had a child before Lily."
I shook my head.
"No."
Victoria looked at Emily.
"Tell him."
Emily looked away.
"Daniel..."
Her voice broke.
"Anna was pregnant before Lily."
My heart sank.
"I know."
"No."
Emily looked at me.
"She wasn't pregnant with Lily."
Silence.
"She had a son."
I couldn't breathe.
"What happened?"
Emily swallowed.
"He was taken."
The room blurred.
A son.
My son.
A child I never knew.
A child Anna carried.
A child someone stole.
"Who?"
My voice cracked.
"Who took him?"
Emily looked at Victoria.
And I already knew.
"Victoria."
She nodded.
"Yes."
I stared at Victoria.
"Why?"
Victoria's answer was simple.
"Because he was valuable."
I felt rage explode.
"He's a child!"
"Not to them."
Her voice was cold.
"To the Legacy Foundation, he was the future."
Detective Collins looked shocked.
"Wait."
She looked at Emily.
"Then Ethan..."
Emily nodded.
"Ethan is Daniel's son."
The silence was unbearable.
Everything shifted.
Ethan.
The name Anna wrote.
The child everyone was searching for.
The child Victoria wanted.
He wasn't another man's son.
He was mine.
My son.
A child I had mourned without knowing I lost.
I remembered every moment with Anna.
Every conversation.
Every time she looked sad when Lily was born.
I thought she was afraid because of Michael.
I thought she was afraid because of Victor.
But maybe...
She was grieving another child.
A child she couldn't save.
A child she couldn't tell me about.
"Why didn't she tell me?"
Emily looked at me.
"Because she was protecting you."
"Again."
My voice broke.
"Everyone says that."
Emily stepped closer.
"Because it's true."
"No."
I shook my head.
"She should have trusted me."
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
"Daniel, she did."
"Then why?"
"Because she knew you would go after him."
I stopped.
"And?"
"And Victoria wanted that."
Victoria smiled.
"Exactly."
Everyone looked at her.
She continued.
"Anna always underestimated me."
"She thought hiding Ethan would keep him safe."
"She was wrong."
"Where is he?"
Victoria looked at the church door.
"Closer than you think."
Before anyone could react, the lights went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
A scream echoed.
Not from Victoria.
Not from Emily.
From outside.
"Lily!"
I ran.
The emergency lights turned on.
And standing at the entrance...
Was my daughter.
Alive.
But she wasn't alone.
A boy stood beside her.
Older.
Maybe nine years old.
Same eyes.
Same dark hair.
My entire body froze.
Because I knew.
I knew before anyone spoke.
Lily ran toward me.
"Dad!"
I caught her.
Held her.
Checked that she was real.
That she was breathing.
Then I looked at the boy.
He stood quietly.
Watching me.
Emily whispered:
"Daniel..."
Her voice shook.
"Meet Ethan."
The boy looked at me.
And after eight years of being separated...
My son finally spoke.
"Hi, Dad."
I couldn't move.
I couldn't breathe.
The world disappeared.
There was only that word.
Dad.
A word I never heard from him.
A word I never knew I was missing.
I fell to my knees.
Ethan stared at me.
Like he didn't know whether he was allowed to come closer.
I opened my arms.
Slowly.
Carefully.
He stepped forward.
And for the first time in eight years...
I held my son.
But the reunion lasted only seconds.
Because Ethan pulled away.
His face was terrified.
"Dad..."
"What?"
He looked behind me.
At Victoria.
"She doesn't know."
I frowned.
"Know what?"
Ethan whispered:
"Where the real Anna is."
My blood froze.
"What?"
Everyone became silent.
Victoria's expression changed.
For the first time...
Fear appeared on her face.
Ethan looked at me.
"Mom isn't dead."
The church went completely silent.
My hands went cold.
Because every person in the room had believed Anna died two years ago.
Everyone.
Except one person.
Victoria.
And now my son had just revealed the impossible.
May you like
Anna was alive.
