Chapter 9: The Woman From Emma’s Past

The call ended.
But Luke’s voice remained.
I could still hear the fear hidden beneath his whisper.
“Dad…”
One word.
One broken sound.
And it was enough to make every instinct inside me scream.
I looked at Reynolds.
“She has him.”
The officer didn’t waste a second.
“Who?”
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.”
Ellison, sitting in the back seat, suddenly spoke.
“Yes, you do.”
I turned around.
“What?”
His face had lost all color.
“You heard the voice.”
“I’ve never heard her before.”
He looked down.
“That’s not true.”
My eyes narrowed.
“What are you talking about?”
Ellison swallowed.
“She said something.”
“What?”
He repeated the words.
“Someone your wife trusted.”
The car became silent.
Then he said:
“There was only one person Emma trusted with everything.”
My heart tightened.
“Who?”
Ellison looked at me.
“Her sister.”
I froze.
“Emma didn’t have a sister.”
“Yes, she did.”
The words hit me like a punch.
“No.”
“Austin…”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“I knew her family.”
“You knew the family she wanted you to know.”
My hands tightened.
“Explain.”
Ellison looked out the window.
“Emma had an older half-sister.”
The name appeared in an old file.
A name I had never seen before.
Claire Whitmore.
Born eight years before Emma.
Same mother.
Different father.
The family secret Emma never told me.
I stared at the document.
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
Ellison answered quietly.
“Because Claire disappeared from her life.”
“Why?”
“Because Claire became involved with the foundation.”
The pieces began connecting.
Another family secret.
Another person close to Emma.
Another hidden shadow.
“How close were they?”
Ellison looked at me.
“Before everything changed?”
He paused.
“They were inseparable.”
We arrived at Sarah’s house.
The front door was open.
My heart stopped.
“Luke!”
I ran inside.
The living room was destroyed.
A chair knocked over.
A broken glass on the floor.
Sarah’s phone lying near the couch.
No Luke.
No Sarah.
Only silence.
I felt my legs weaken.
Not again.
Not my son.
Not after I just found him.
Reynolds searched the rooms.
“Austin!”
I turned.
He was holding something.
A small piece of paper.
My hands shook as I took it.
Three words were written.
In handwriting I didn’t recognize.
COME ALONE, AUSTIN.
Underneath was an address.
And one more sentence.
“Ask Emma why she never told you about me.”
Claire.
Ellison stared at the note.
“This is impossible.”
I looked at him.
“You know her.”
He didn’t answer.
“Don’t lie to me again.”
His face changed.
“I knew of her.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
He looked away.
“Yes.”
“You knew Claire.”
“Yes.”
“Then tell me who she is.”
Ellison sat down.
“She was one of the original people involved with the Whitmore Foundation.”
My stomach turned.
“And Emma trusted her?”
“At first.”
“What changed?”
Ellison hesitated.
“Emma found out Claire wasn’t trying to destroy the foundation.”
“What was she trying to do?”
“Control it.”
The address led us to an old building downtown.
A place abandoned for years.
The kind of building people walk past without noticing.
The kind of place secrets love.
Reynolds wanted backup.
I refused.
Not because I was being reckless.
Because I knew whoever took Luke wanted me alone.
They had planned this.
They had calculated every step.
And my son was their leverage.
Inside the building, the lights flickered.
A child’s voice echoed.
“Dad?”
I ran.
“Luke!”
But Reynolds grabbed my arm.
“Wait.”
The voice came again.
“Dad…”
This time I noticed.
Something was wrong.
It sounded like Luke.
But not live.
A recording.
A trap.
My breathing changed.
Someone was playing his voice.
Then a woman spoke.
“You always were impulsive.”
The lights turned on.
A woman stood at the end of the hallway.
Dark hair.
Cold eyes.
Older than Emma.
But something about her face was familiar.
Too familiar.
She looked at me.
And smiled.
“Austin.”
I stared.
“Claire.”
She nodded.
“So you finally learned my name.”
“Where is my son?”
She ignored the question.
“You look just like Emma described.”
My fists tightened.
“You knew my wife.”
“I loved your wife.”
“Then where is Luke?”
Her smile disappeared.
“Do you know what Emma did?”
I stepped forward.
“I asked where my son is.”
“She betrayed me.”
The words shocked me.
“Betrayed you?”
Claire laughed quietly.
“She promised we would expose them together.”
“Expose who?”
“The people running everything.”
“Then why are you doing this?”
Her expression changed.
“Because Emma lost her courage.”
My anger exploded.
“Don’t talk about her.”
“She chose you.”
The sentence stopped me.
“She chose a normal life.”
Claire stepped closer.
“She chose a husband and a child instead of finishing what we started.”
“That doesn’t justify anything.”
“No.”
Her eyes became colder.
“But it explains everything.”
A door opened behind her.
And Luke appeared.
My heart almost stopped.
He was alive.
But he wasn’t alone.
A man stood behind him.
Holding his shoulder.
Not hurting him.
But controlling him.
“Dad.”
I moved forward.
“Luke.”
Claire raised her hand.
“Stop.”
I froze.
“Let him go.”
“You want him back?”
“Yes.”
“Then answer one question.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
She walked closer.
“Did Emma ever tell you the truth about Luke’s birth?”
The room became silent.
My heart started beating faster.
“What are you talking about?”
Claire looked at me.
“The foundation didn’t choose Luke because of the evidence.”
She paused.
“They chose him because of his blood.”
I felt sick.
“No.”
“Yes.”
She smiled sadly.
“Your wife spent years trying to hide it.”
I looked at Luke.
My son looked terrified.
“Stop.”
Claire continued.
“Because Luke is not just connected to the foundation.”
She whispered:
“He is the reason the foundation exists.”
The words didn’t make sense.
They couldn’t.
But before I could respond…
Luke suddenly shouted:
“Dad!”
I turned.
His eyes were full of fear.
“Don’t believe her!”
Everyone froze.
Claire’s expression changed.
For the first time…
She looked surprised.
Because Luke knew something.
Something she didn’t expect.
My son looked at me.
And whispered:
“Mom told me the truth.”
I stepped closer.
“What truth, buddy?”
Luke held the dinosaur tightly.
Then said:
“Mom said…”
His voice trembled.
“Grandma wasn’t the bad one.”
A silence fell.
Then Luke finished:
“She said the real person who hurt her…”
He looked directly at Claire.
May you like
“Was Aunt Claire.”
