Chapter 8: The Truth Hidden in Luke

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The words hung in the air like smoke.

“Your son wasn’t just a witness.”

I stared at Detective Ellison.

My mind refused to accept what he had said.

Luke.

My five-year-old son.

The little boy who still needed me to check under his bed for monsters.

The child who cried when his ice cream fell on the ground.

The child who slept holding a stuffed dinosaur because it reminded him of his mother.

How could he be connected to something so dangerous?

“What does that mean?”

My voice sounded different.

Almost like someone else was speaking.

Ellison looked away.

“I should have told you sooner.”

“You should have told me two years ago.”

“I know.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to say you know.”

My anger was no longer just anger.

It was pain.

“You watched me bury my wife.”

Ellison closed his eyes.

“You watched me tell my son that his mother loved him.”

His face tightened.

“And all this time, you knew there was something wrong.”

“I was trying to protect him.”

“By lying to me?”

“Yes.”

The honesty made it worse.

Reynolds interrupted.

“We need to focus.”

I looked at him.

“My son is in danger.”

“Yes.”

“Then stop hiding things from me.”

Nobody spoke.

Because they knew I was right.

Too many secrets had already destroyed my family.

No more.

Not anymore.

Ellison finally sat down.

“You deserve the truth.”

I stayed standing.

“Then tell me everything.”

He took a deep breath.

“The Whitmore Foundation began as a legitimate organization.”

“What changed?”

“Power.”

He looked at the files around us.

“People realized families in difficult situations were easy to manipulate.”

My stomach tightened.

“What kind of manipulation?”

“Adoption records.”

“Medical information.”

“Custody disputes.”

“Private family histories.”

I felt sick.

“They collected information.”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

Ellison hesitated.

“To control outcomes.”

The words were terrifying because they were vague.

And sometimes vague answers are scarier than clear ones.

“What outcomes?”

He looked at me.

“Who gets children.”

The room went silent.

I thought about Darlene.

Her obsession with Luke.

Her insistence that she knew what was best.

Her anger when I refused to let her have more control.

It suddenly looked different.

Not like a grandmother wanting time with her grandson.

Like someone trying to regain possession.

“Darlene was involved.”

“Yes.”

“How involved?”

“She helped identify families.”

My fists tightened.

“She was helping them take children?”

Ellison didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

“Then why Luke?”

Ellison looked at the dinosaur.

“Because of Emma.”

“What did Emma find?”

“She discovered that some children were being placed with families who had connections to the foundation.”

My blood ran cold.

“Illegal adoptions?”

“Yes.”

“And Luke?”

Ellison looked down.

“Luke’s name appeared in their records.”

I felt like the floor disappeared.

“No.”

“Austin…”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“My son was born to me and Emma.”

“Yes.”

“Then why would his name be there?”

“Because Emma found something strange.”

“What?”

Ellison looked at me.

“Luke’s medical records.”

I froze.

“What about them?”

“When Luke was born, there was an unusual request.”

“From who?”

“From a doctor connected to the foundation.”

My breathing became heavier.

“What request?”

Ellison paused.

“Additional genetic testing.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

“That’s what Emma was trying to find out.”

My mind went back.

The day Luke was born.

The hospital.

Emma crying.

Me holding my son for the first time.

I remembered the doctor saying everything was normal.

I remembered Emma looking confused afterward.

I remembered her asking:

“Why would they need another test?”

At the time, we thought it was paperwork.

A mistake.

Something harmless.

But maybe it wasn’t.

“Where are those records?”

Ellison answered quietly.

“Gone.”

“Gone?”

“Someone removed them.”

“Who?”

He looked at me.

“The same person who removed pages from Emma’s journal.”

I felt a wave of anger.

“They erased my son’s history.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Ellison looked toward the door.

“Because they found out Emma copied the information.”

“And hid it.”

“Yes.”

“Inside Dino.”

“No.”

I frowned.

“What?”

Ellison shook his head.

“The dinosaur was only the container.”

“What does that mean?”

“The real evidence was never the memory card.”

My heart stopped.

“Then what was it?”

He looked at me.

“The video.”

“The video?”

“Yes.”

“But we watched it.”

“No.”

His voice became serious.

“We watched a copy.”

The room froze.

“What?”

“The original file contained something else.”

“Where is it?”

Ellison looked uncomfortable.

“Your wife didn’t trust technology.”

“What?”

“She believed anything digital could be stolen.”

He pointed toward the dinosaur.

“Emma created a backup.”

“Where?”

Ellison looked at me.

“Somewhere only Luke could access.”

My stomach tightened.

“Luke?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Because she knew nobody would hurt a child to get information.”

A horrible realization appeared.

“They would.”

Ellison’s face went pale.

“They already tried.”

I grabbed my jacket.

“Where is my son?”

Reynolds immediately stood.

“Your sister’s house.”

I grabbed my phone.

No messages.

No missed calls.

Nothing.

Too quiet.

I called Sarah.

One ring.

Two.

Three.

Then voicemail.

My heart began racing.

I called again.

Nothing.

Again.

Nothing.

“Something’s wrong.”

Reynolds grabbed his radio.

“Units to Sarah Calder’s residence.”

We ran.

The drive felt endless.

Every red light.

Every second.

Every car in front of us.

Everything felt like an obstacle.

I kept calling.

No answer.

Then finally…

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone in the car froze.

I answered.

“Hello?”

For a moment, there was only silence.

Then a small voice.

“Dad?”

My heart stopped.

“Luke?”

A quiet breath.

“Dad…”

I closed my eyes.

“I’m here.”

Then Luke whispered:

“Grandma was right.”

My blood turned cold.

“What do you mean?”

“She said you would come looking.”

I gripped the phone.

“Where are you?”

No answer.

Only a sound.

A door closing.

Then a woman’s voice.

Not Darlene.

Someone else.

A woman I had never heard before.

“Austin Calder.”

My body froze.

“You finally understand.”

“Who are you?”

A pause.

Then:

“Someone your wife trusted.”

The call went silent.

Reynolds looked at me.

“What happened?”

I stared at the phone.

Because I knew one thing.

Someone had Luke.

And whoever had him…

Was not afraid of me finding them.

They wanted me to come.

May you like

They were waiting.

And they had my son.
