Chapter 10: The Sister Who Wanted the Truth

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not Claire.

Not the man standing behind Luke.

Not even me.

The entire world seemed to freeze around one sentence.

“The real person who hurt her was Aunt Claire.”

I stared at my son.

My five-year-old son.

The same little boy who still mixed up words when he got excited.

The same little boy who needed help tying his shoes.

But right now…

He was standing there carrying a truth that adults had spent years hiding.

“Luke…”

My voice shook.

“Buddy, what did Mom tell you?”

Claire’s expression changed.

The confidence disappeared.

For the first time since she appeared, she looked uncertain.

“Don’t listen to him.”

My eyes snapped toward her.

“You don’t get to tell me what to listen to.”

She stepped forward.

“Emma filled his head with fear.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You’re lying.”

Claire smiled.

“You think you know your wife.”

The sentence burned.

Because I did know Emma.

But maybe not everything.

Not anymore.

“She kept secrets from you.”

I looked at her.

“Because she was trying to protect me.”

Claire laughed softly.

“No, Austin.”

Her voice became colder.

“Because she knew you couldn’t handle the truth.”

The man behind Luke moved slightly.

Reynolds noticed immediately.

“Let the boy go.”

The man ignored him.

Claire looked at the officer.

“This isn’t your fight.”

Reynolds raised his weapon.

“Everything involving a kidnapped child is my fight.”

Claire smiled.

“You still think the law protects you.”

The way she said it made my skin crawl.

Not like a criminal.

Like someone who had already seen the system fail.

Someone who knew exactly how powerful she was.

I focused only on Luke.

“Buddy.”

He looked at me.

“Can you come to Dad?”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I want to.”

The man behind him tightened his grip.

Not enough to hurt him.

Enough to stop him.

My anger exploded.

“Touch him again and you’ll regret it.”

Claire raised her hand.

“Enough.”

She looked at Luke.

“You remember what your mother told you?”

Luke nodded.

“She said never trust people who want to control you.”

Claire’s face hardened.

“Your mother was confused.”

Luke shook his head.

“No.”

His voice became stronger.

“She was scared.”

That word changed something.

Because everyone heard it.

Not just fear.

Memory.

Luke wasn’t repeating something.

He was remembering.

“Tell me.”

I looked at my son.

“What did Mom say?”

Luke hugged the dinosaur.

“She said Aunt Claire was angry.”

Claire’s face went pale.

“She said Emma was selfish.”

Luke continued.

“She said Mom chose Dad and me.”

The room became silent.

Claire whispered:

“Stop.”

Luke looked at her.

“She said you wanted to take Dino.”

The same thing Darlene wanted.

The same thing everyone kept chasing.

The dinosaur.

But why?

“What else did Mom say?”

Luke looked at me.

“She said if anything happened…”

His voice cracked.

“She said Dad would find the truth.”

I closed my eyes.

Because that was Emma.

Even at the end…

She believed I would find a way.

Claire suddenly laughed.

A broken laugh.

“You think this changes anything?”

She looked at me.

“You think Emma was innocent?”

I stared.

“She wasn’t.”

“She was.”

“No.”

Claire stepped closer.

“She promised me.”

“Promised what?”

“To expose them.”

“Who?”

“The people behind the foundation.”

I frowned.

“Then why are you protecting them?”

Claire’s expression changed.

And for a second…

I saw something.

Pain.

Not anger.

Pain.

“I’m not protecting them.”

“Then what are you doing?”

Her voice lowered.

“I’m finishing what Emma couldn’t.”

The answer confused me.

“You kidnapped my son to finish Emma’s work?”

“No.”

She looked at Luke.

“I brought him here because he is the only person who can open it.”

“Open what?”

Claire didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked at the dinosaur.

My heart stopped.

The dinosaur.

Again.

Everything came back to that toy.

The tracker.

The memory card.

The hidden seams.

Everyone wanted it.

But nobody wanted the toy.

They wanted what was inside.

“What is inside Dino?”

Claire smiled.

“Ask your son.”

I looked at Luke.

“Buddy?”

He lowered his eyes.

“I don’t know.”

Claire laughed.

“He knows more than he thinks.”

Then Luke did something unexpected.

He placed the dinosaur on the floor.

Slowly.

Carefully.

He touched its belly.

“Mom said I had to remember.”

My heart tightened.

“Remember what?”

He looked at the toy.

“She sang a song.”

“A song?”

He nodded.

“The night before she went away.”

Everyone became silent.

Luke started humming.

A simple melody.

A melody I recognized.

Emma’s song.

She used to sing it when Luke couldn’t sleep.

But there was something different.

A pattern.

A rhythm.

Three short notes.

Then two.

Then three again.

Claire suddenly moved.

“Stop him.”

The man grabbed Luke.

But Reynolds reacted instantly.

“Police!”

The room exploded into movement.

The man pushed Luke away.

I ran.

I caught my son before he hit the ground.

“Dad!”

I held him tightly.

“You’re okay.”

“I knew you would come.”

Again.

Those words.

The words that broke me every time.

Behind us, chaos erupted.

Reynolds and the other officers restrained the man.

Claire didn’t run.

She just stood there.

Watching.

Almost relieved.

I looked at her.

“Why?”

She didn’t answer.

“Why would you do this?”

Her eyes moved to Luke.

“Because Emma was right.”

The answer shocked me.

“What?”

“She knew the truth had to come out.”

“Then why hurt us?”

Claire looked exhausted.

“Because sometimes the only way to expose a monster…”

She paused.

“Is to become one.”

I hated that answer.

Because I knew what she meant.

People who spend too long fighting darkness sometimes forget where they end and the darkness begins.

But it didn’t excuse what she did.

Not to Luke.

Not to Emma.

Not to me.

As officers took Claire away, she turned back.

“Austin.”

I didn’t respond.

“Your wife left one final message.”

My body froze.

“What?”

Claire smiled sadly.

“Not for you.”

She looked at Luke.

“For him.”

Then she was gone.

Later that night, Luke slept beside me.

The dinosaur rested between us.

The police had recovered more files from the building.

More evidence.

More names.

But one thing bothered me.

The song.

Why did Claire react when Luke hummed it?

I carefully picked up the dinosaur.

And for the first time, I looked at it differently.

Not as a toy.

As a message.

I pressed the fabric near the belly.

Something clicked.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was not a memory card.

Not a document.

Not a recording.

Something much smaller.

A tiny metal key.

Attached to it was a note.

Only five words.

Written in Emma’s handwriting.

“For Luke when he’s ready.”

My hands trembled.

Because after everything we discovered…

I realized something terrifying.

Emma had not hidden the truth from me.

She had hidden it from everyone.

Including herself.

Because she knew one day…

May you like

Luke would have to unlock it.

And that day had arrived.
