Chapter 2: The Secret Inside the Dinosaur

The room went silent after the call ended.
Not the normal kind of silence.
The kind where everyone is waiting for the next disaster to arrive.
I stared at the phone screen.
Unknown number.
No trace.
No location.
Nothing.
Just a ghost.
A ghost that sounded exactly like the woman who had locked my son away.
Officer Reynolds slowly lowered his radio.
“Was that her?”
I nodded.
“Darlene.”
“Did she threaten you?”
I looked at Luke.
My son was still holding onto my jacket.
His fingers were wrapped around the fabric so tightly that his knuckles were white.
“She didn’t threaten me.”
I swallowed.
“She wanted me to know something.”
Reynolds looked around the room.
“What?”
I looked at the camera in the corner.
“The truth.”
Paramedics checked Luke outside the farmhouse.
He hated letting go of me.
Every time a stranger stepped closer, his eyes searched for mine.
Like he was making sure I was still there.
Like if he looked away for one second, I would disappear too.
“I’m right here, buddy,” I whispered.
He nodded.
But he still didn’t release my hand.
The paramedic examined his bruises carefully.
“How long was he locked in here?”
I looked at Reynolds.
The officer answered.
“We don’t know yet.”
The paramedic frowned.
Luke looked down.
“I don’t know.”
I knelt beside him.
“Can you tell us what happened?”
His eyes moved toward the farmhouse.
Fear crossed his face.
“Grandma said I was bad.”
I felt my jaw tighten.
“What did she say?”
Luke hugged the dinosaur.
“She said bad kids don’t get to be with their dads.”
The words hit harder than any punch.
I looked away for a moment.
Because I didn’t want Luke to see the anger in my eyes.
“Why did she lock you here?”
He whispered:
“Because I heard something.”
Reynolds immediately stepped closer.
“What did you hear?”
Luke looked at him.
“Grandma was talking to someone.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
His voice became smaller.
“But she said…”
He stopped.
“It's okay, Luke.”
I touched his shoulder.
“You can tell us.”
He looked at me.
“She said the secret was almost gone.”
The cold night air suddenly felt heavier.
“What secret?” Reynolds asked.
Luke shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Then he looked at the dinosaur.
“But Grandma wanted Dino.”
Everyone became still.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
Luke touched the stuffed animal.
“She kept asking where Dino was.”
My heart skipped.
“When?”
“Before she locked me in the room.”
He looked confused.
“She was angry because I wouldn’t give him to her.”
I stared at the dinosaur.
The same toy that had comforted my son after losing his mother.
The same toy Darlene apparently wanted badly.
Why?
Back at the station, the officers examined the dinosaur.
Not damaged.
Not torn.
Just old.
Loved.
The kind of toy a child carries everywhere.
Reynolds placed it on the table.
“You said someone opened the seam?”
I nodded.
“Look here.”
I pointed.
The stitching was slightly different.
A professional would probably miss it.
But a father notices everything about the things his child loves.
Especially when something feels wrong.
The forensic technician carefully examined it.
After several minutes, she looked up.
“There’s something inside.”
My heart jumped.
“What?”
She used a small tool and gently opened the hidden seam.
Inside was a tiny plastic bag.
Everyone moved closer.
The technician removed it.
Inside was a small memory card.
Reynolds stared.
“A memory card?”
I felt my stomach twist.
“Why would someone hide that inside a stuffed dinosaur?”
Nobody answered.
Because everyone already knew.
Whatever was on that card…
Someone wanted it hidden.
The technician connected the card to a computer.
A folder appeared.
Only one file.
VIDEO_0317.
The room went completely quiet.
The file opened.
At first, there was only darkness.
Then a voice.
A woman’s voice.
Darlene.
My entire body went cold.
The camera angle was strange.
Hidden.
Maybe inside a room.
Maybe inside a bag.
Her voice was clear.
“I don’t know how much longer I can keep pretending.”
Another voice answered.
A man.
Unknown.
“You need to calm down.”
Darlene laughed bitterly.
“Calm down? Do you understand what happens if Austin finds out?”
The man didn’t answer.
Then Darlene said something that made my blood freeze.
“He has no idea what his wife discovered before she died.”
I stopped breathing.
My wife.
Emma.
The room disappeared around me.
For two years, I had tried to accept that she was gone.
The accident.
The hospital.
The funeral.
The empty bedroom.
I had survived because of Luke.
But now…
A video was telling me Emma had known something.
Something Darlene wanted hidden.
The recording continued.
“She was getting too close,” Darlene said.
“She was asking questions.”
The man replied:
“You said you handled it.”
A long pause.
Then Darlene whispered:
“I did.”
I felt my hands become numb.
Reynolds looked at me.
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t speak.
The video continued.
“She left notes,” the man said.
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“You need to find them.”
“She gave something to Austin.”
My heart stopped.
The man became angry.
“What?”
Darlene’s voice lowered.
“Before she died, Emma hid something for him.”
The video ended.
Just like that.
No explanation.
No answers.
Only silence.
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
Then Reynolds turned toward me.
“Austin.”
I didn’t respond.
“Austin, did your wife ever mention anything unusual before she died?”
I stared at the frozen video screen.
Memories rushed back.
Emma sitting at the kitchen table late at night.
Her tired eyes.
Her worried expression.
The way she suddenly stopped talking whenever I entered the room.
I had thought she was scared about her illness.
I thought she was protecting me from pain.
But maybe…
Maybe she was protecting me from something else.
“She told me one thing.”
Everyone waited.
I looked up.
“Three days before she died.”
My voice shook.
“She told me…”
I remembered her exact words.
“Promise me you’ll never let anyone convince Luke that he’s alone.”
Reynolds leaned forward.
“Did she say why?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
I looked at the dinosaur.
“But now I think she was trying to tell me something.”
Outside the station window, police lights flashed across the dark parking lot.
And somewhere in Springfield…
Darlene Whitlock was still free.
She knew we had found Luke.
She knew we found the video.
And now she knew one thing.
The secret she buried with my wife…
Was coming back.
But she made one mistake.
She underestimated a grieving father.
Because I wasn’t searching for answers anymore.
I was searching for the truth.
May you like
And I was going to find every piece of it.
No matter who tried to stop me.
