Chapter 7: The Voice Behind the Darkness

The hallway remained completely black.
No footsteps.
No movement.
Only that voice.
A voice I knew.
A voice I had heard in moments when I was desperate.
A voice that had offered comfort when my world collapsed.
But now…
That same voice sounded like a warning.
“Show yourself.”
My voice echoed through the abandoned building.
Reynolds pulled his weapon.
“Stay behind me.”
I barely heard him.
My eyes were fixed on the darkness.
Because my mind was fighting against reality.
It couldn’t be.
It shouldn’t be.
Then the figure stepped forward.
The light from the emergency exit sign revealed his face.
Detective Mark Ellison.
The man who investigated my wife’s death.
The man whose name was written on Emma’s photograph.
The man who had just told us to bury the past.
I stared at him.
“You.”
Ellison looked tired.
Not angry.
Not surprised.
Just tired.
Like he had been carrying this secret for too long.
“Austin…”
“Don’t say my name.”
He stopped.
“You don’t get to say my name.”
Reynolds stepped forward.
“Ellison, what are you doing here?”
The detective looked around the room.
“This place was never supposed to be found.”
My heart sank.
“What does that mean?”
He looked at the files around us.
“It means Emma got too close.”
I felt my hands shake.
“You knew.”
Silence.
“You knew everything.”
Ellison didn’t answer.
That was his answer.
I moved toward him.
“You were there.”
His eyes met mine.
“At the hospital.”
No response.
“You visited her before she died.”
Still nothing.
“You knew she was investigating the foundation.”
His jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
The word hit me harder than I expected.
After two years of wondering…
After two years of blaming fate…
The truth was standing in front of me.
“You lied to me.”
Ellison looked away.
“Yes.”
My anger exploded.
“You stood beside me at her funeral.”
“I know.”
“You told me it was an accident.”
“I know.”
“You watched me raise Luke alone.”
His face changed.
A flicker of guilt.
“I know.”
I wanted to hit him.
I wanted answers.
I wanted to understand how someone could watch another person suffer while holding the truth in their hands.
“Why?”
The question came out quietly.
“Why would you do that?”
Ellison closed his eyes.
“Because I was afraid.”
I laughed bitterly.
“You were afraid?”
He looked at me.
“You have no idea who you’re dealing with.”
“Then tell me.”
He looked toward the files.
“The Whitmore Foundation wasn’t just a charity.”
“We know.”
“No.”
His voice became serious.
“You don’t.”
He stepped closer.
“The foundation had connections everywhere.”
“Money.”
“Politics.”
“Law enforcement.”
“People who could erase problems.”
My stomach tightened.
“And Emma found them.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Ellison looked at the photograph in my hand.
“Because your wife noticed things other people ignored.”
A strange sadness appeared on his face.
“She was the smartest person I ever met.”
Hearing him praise Emma made my anger burn hotter.
“You don’t get to talk about her like you cared.”
He looked down.
“I did care.”
“Then why didn’t you save her?”
The question destroyed the room.
For a moment, Ellison had no answer.
Then he whispered:
“Because I tried.”
The building became silent.
Even Reynolds lowered his weapon slightly.
“You’re saying you tried to help her?”
Ellison nodded.
“Emma found financial records connected to the foundation.”
“What kind of records?”
“Payments.”
“To who?”
“People.”
“Which people?”
Ellison looked at me.
“People who were supposed to protect families.”
My stomach turned.
“Police?”
“Yes.”
“Government?”
“Yes.”
“Doctors?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
The word made everything darker.
Emma hadn’t discovered one bad person.
She had discovered an entire network.
A machine built from secrets.
And my wife had stood in front of it alone.
“Why hide the truth from me?”
Ellison looked at me.
“Because Emma asked me to.”
I froze.
“What?”
He reached into his jacket.
Slowly.
Carefully.
He pulled out a small envelope.
Not the same one.
Another one.
“She gave this to me two days before the accident.”
My hands tightened.
“What did she say?”
“She said if anything happened to her…”
He swallowed.
“I was not supposed to tell you unless Luke was in danger.”
My heart stopped.
“Why Luke?”
“Because she believed they would come after him.”
I stared at the envelope.
“Give it to me.”
Ellison hesitated.
Then handed it over.
Inside was a letter.
Emma’s handwriting.
Again.
My hands shook as I read.
Austin,
If you are reading this, then things have gone worse than I expected.
I need you to understand something. I never wanted you involved.
You are the one person I wanted to protect.
But Luke is different. They know he exists. They know he is connected to me.
The dinosaur is important. Not because of what is inside it, but because of what it proves.
Trust carefully.
The person who appears closest to you may be the person standing against you.
Protect our son.
Please forgive me.
Emma
I lowered the letter.
My vision blurred.
“She knew.”
Ellison nodded.
“She knew she might not survive.”
My voice cracked.
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
“Because she loved you.”
I looked at him.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“It does.”
He pointed at the letter.
“She knew you would fight.”
“And?”
“And she knew fighting them would put Luke in danger.”
The truth hurt.
Because I knew Emma.
She would sacrifice herself before risking our son.
That was who she was.
Then Reynolds’ phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed almost immediately.
“What?”
A pause.
“Are you sure?”
Another pause.
Then he looked at me.
“Austin…”
I stood.
“What?”
His expression was serious.
“Darlene escaped.”
My heart dropped.
“What?”
“She was being transported.”
“How?”
“The vehicle was attacked.”
Ellison suddenly looked terrified.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
“Where is she?”
Reynolds stared at his phone.
“She left a message.”
“For who?”
He looked at me.
“For you.”
My stomach tightened.
“What message?”
Reynolds read it.
Slowly.
“Tell Austin the truth was never inside the dinosaur.”
Everyone froze.
Then he continued.
“She said…”
His voice lowered.
“Tell him the real secret is inside Luke.”
The room went silent.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“Inside Luke?”
Ellison whispered:
“No…”
I turned toward him.
“What?”
His eyes were filled with fear.
“Austin…”
“What do you know?”
He looked at the photograph of Emma.
Then at me.
Then said the words that changed everything.
“Your son wasn’t just a witness.”
“He was the reason they were watching your family.”
I couldn’t breathe.
Because suddenly I understood.
Luke wasn’t caught in the middle of this.
He was the center of it.
May you like
And whoever had taken Emma away…
Had been waiting two years for the moment when they could come back for him.
