Chapter 8 - The Man Behind the GlassThe emergency lights activated.

A red glow flooded Room Zero.
Adrian raised the metal cylinder.
"Who's there?"
No answer.
Then a wall panel slid open.
Behind it was a reinforced glass room.
A man stood inside.
Older.
Gray hair.
Expensive suit.
Hands behind his back.
Victor stared.
"No."
Adrian's face hardened.
"Marcus?"
Marcus Vale smiled.
Adrian's uncle.
The man officially pronounced dead twelve years earlier.
Adrian stepped toward the glass.
"You died."
Marcus laughed.
"So did Elias."
Noah looked frightened.
"Why are all the adults in my life supposed to be dead?"
Marcus ignored him.
Adrian's voice was cold.
"You built Helix."
Marcus shook his head.
"I built the foundation. Helix became something else."
"Did you kill Elias?"
Marcus paused.
"No."
"Did you order the attack?"
"No."
"Then tell me who did."
Marcus looked at Noah.
"The boy is the reason."
Noah stepped backward.
"What?"
Marcus approached the glass.
"Your father discovered that Elias and Mara had created something more dangerous than an engine."
He tapped the glass.
"Predictive intelligence."
Adrian frowned.
"AI?"
"Not exactly."
Marcus smiled.
"It could predict human decisions."
Victor looked horrified.
"That's impossible."
"It wasn't."
Marcus explained.
The system Elias developed could analyze thousands of variables and determine likely human actions before they happened.
Negotiations.
Markets.
Military movements.
Personal decisions.
It wasn't mind reading.
It was prediction.
The archive contained the complete system.
"No wonder Helix wants it," Adrian whispered.
Marcus nodded.
"No wonder governments wanted it."
Noah stared at him.
"And my father?"
"He tried to destroy it."
Marcus's expression changed.
"Mara disagreed."
Noah's eyes widened.
"My mother?"
"She believed the system could save lives."
Adrian shook his head.
"And Elias didn't?"
"Elias believed power always finds a way to justify itself."
Marcus looked at Adrian.
"That's why he hid everything."
A sudden alarm sounded.
Marcus glanced at the monitors.
"They're here."
"Who?"
Marcus smiled.
"Everyone."
The facility doors exploded inward.
Armed soldiers flooded the corridor.
Victor shouted,
"They found us!"
Adrian pulled Noah behind the control platform.
Gunfire erupted.
Glass shattered.
Marcus disappeared through a hidden door.
Adrian shouted,
"Traitor!"
Marcus stopped.
He looked back.
"I never said I was on your side."
Then he vanished.
Adrian turned to Noah.
"Can you open an exit?"
Noah nodded.
He ran to the control system.
His fingers moved.
One door opened.
A second.
A third.
Then all three slammed shut.
Noah froze.
"They're overriding me."
Victor looked at the screen.
"Someone is accessing the system remotely."
Adrian asked,
"Who?"
Noah stared.
Then his face went white.
"Mara."
Adrian felt cold.
"Your mother?"
Noah nodded.
"She's inside the system."
A monitor flickered.
Mara's face appeared.
"Adrian."
He stepped forward.
"You lied."
She looked at him.
"So did Elias."
"Where is he?"
She was silent.
Noah stepped closer.
"Mom, please."
Mara looked at her son.
"Come with me."
Noah shook his head.
"Where?"
"I'll explain everything."
Adrian shouted,
"Don't trust her!"
Mara's face hardened.
"You have no right to tell him that."
Adrian stared.
"I knew your husband."
"You betrayed him."
"No."
"You left him alone."
"No."
"You chose Marcus."
Adrian's voice cracked.
"I didn't know."
Mara whispered,
"That's exactly why you were useful."
The screen went black.
Noah looked at Adrian.
"What does she mean?"
Adrian didn't know.
Then he noticed the black cylinder in his hand.
A tiny slot had opened.
Inside was a memory chip.
He inserted it into the nearest terminal.
A single file appeared.
PROJECT NOAH.
Adrian clicked it.
The first image loaded.
It showed Noah as an infant.
Then another.
Noah at three years old.
Then five.
Then eight.
Then ten.
Every year.
Someone had been tracking him.
For his entire life.
The last photograph had been taken three days earlier.
Noah stared at it.
"They've been watching me."
Adrian nodded.
Then the final file opened.

One sentence appeared.
NOAH WAS NOT BORN. HE WAS DESIGNED.
