Chapter 10 - The Man Behind the GraveAdrian woke strapped to a steel chair.

His head throbbed.

The room was dark.

A single light hung above him.

Footsteps approached.

Adrian looked up.

Mara entered.

"You took your time."

Adrian pulled against the restraints.

"Where is Noah?"

"Safe."

"With you?"

"Not yet."

Adrian glared.

"Where is Elias?"

Mara stopped.

Then she smiled sadly.

"Seven years ago, everyone thought Elias died."

Adrian's voice tightened.

"You knew he was alive."

"I did."

"Where is he?"

Mara didn't answer.

Instead, she placed a folder on the table.

"You've misunderstood everything."

"Then explain it."

Mara opened the folder.

Photos spilled across the table.

Adrian saw Elias.

Alive.

Older.

Scarred.

Working inside a laboratory.

"He survived the crash," Mara said.

"Then why disappear?"

"Because Helix found him."

"Why didn't he contact me?"

Mara looked at him.

"Because he believed you were compromised."

Adrian's heart tightened.

"By who?"

Mara's expression became serious.

"Your company."

Adrian laughed bitterly.

"My company?"

"Your father began funding the project before you knew anything about it."

"My father died before the prototype was finished."

"Exactly."

Mara leaned forward.

"Your family wasn't a victim."

Adrian stared.

"They were investors."

Silence.

Mara explained that Vale Motors had secretly funded Elias's research.

When the predictive system became viable, Adrian's father wanted it weaponized.

Elias refused.

Marcus joined the project.

Mara became trapped between them.

Then Elias created Noah.

Not as a weapon.

As a safeguard.

A human interface capable of shutting the system down.

Adrian stared at her.

"Then why are you trying to activate it?"

Mara's eyes filled with pain.

"Because the world is already using it."

"What?"

"Helix finished the software without Elias."

She placed another photograph on the table.

Politicians.

Military leaders.

Corporate executives.

All connected through a network.

"They've been making decisions using predictive models."

Adrian looked horrified.

"And you think activating Elias's system will stop them?"

"No."

Mara's voice dropped.

"I think it will replace them."

Adrian stared.

"You want one system to control everyone."

"I want to stop wars."

"By controlling people?"

"I want to stop innocent people from dying."

Adrian shook his head.

"That's not your choice."

Mara's expression broke.

"You sound exactly like Elias."

A door opened.

Two guards entered.

Noah was brought inside.

His wrists were restrained.

Adrian's face changed.

"Noah."

The boy looked terrified.

Mara turned toward him.

"Ready?"

Noah shook his head.

"I won't do it."

Mara sighed.

"I know."

She looked toward the guards.

They removed the restraints.

Noah stared at her.

"Mom."

Mara approached.

"I never wanted you to grow up alone."

"Then why did you leave?"

Mara froze.

Noah's voice broke.

"Why did you let everyone tell me you were dead?"

Mara closed her eyes.

"Because if they knew you existed, they would have killed you."

"Did Dad know?"

"Yes."

"Is he alive?"

Mara looked at Adrian.

Then at Noah.

"Yes."

Noah began crying.

"Where is he?"

Mara didn't answer.

A deep mechanical sound rolled through the building.

The walls vibrated.

Adrian looked at the floor.

"What was that?"

Mara turned.

"The archive is activating."

Noah suddenly grabbed his head.

He screamed.

Adrian rushed toward him.

"Noah!"

The boy collapsed.

Screens around the room lit up.

Thousands of lines of data flooded across them.

Then every screen displayed the same sentence.

PRIMARY INTERFACE CONNECTED.

Mara whispered,

"It's starting."

Adrian looked at her.

"You said you could control it."

Mara stared at the screens.

"I thought I could."

Another message appeared.

HUMAN CONTROL PROTOCOL REJECTED.

Mara's face went white.

"What?"

The system continued.

AUTONOMOUS DECISION MODE: ACTIVE.

Every lock in the facility opened.

Every machine turned on.

And somewhere beneath them, something began moving.

Something massive.

Mara stepped backward.

"No."

Adrian looked at Noah.

The boy opened his eyes.

They were glowing with reflected blue light.

May you like

He whispered:

"It's awake."
