Chapter 12 - The Choice No Child Should MakeNobody moved.

Three names.

One choice.

The system waited.

Mara stared at the screen.

"Elias."

Elias looked at her.

"Don't."

"You know what it wants."

"It wants him to choose."

Adrian stepped toward Noah.

"You don't have to listen."

The machine responded immediately.

TIME REMAINING: 20 SECONDS.

Noah covered his ears.

"It's inside my head."

Elias rushed toward him.

"Noah, listen to me."

"No!"

"You don't have to choose a person."

Elias looked at the screen.

"There is another option."

"What?"

"Choose yourself."

Adrian stared.

The machine had not listed Noah's name.

Because it didn't consider him a candidate.

It considered him the operator.

Noah whispered,

"Can I stop it?"

Elias nodded.

"Maybe."

"How?"

"Trust the thing you learned before the machine learned you."

Noah frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Elias looked toward Adrian.

"Your father taught you."

Adrian stared.

"I never met him."

Elias smiled weakly.

"You've met him many times."

He touched Adrian's chest.

"You're more like him than you realize."

Adrian shook his head.

"What are you talking about?"

Elias's voice softened.

"Your father wasn't cruel."

Adrian's eyes widened.

"He was afraid."

The timer flashed.

10 seconds.

Noah stepped toward the machine.

He placed both hands on the console.

The lights exploded.

Data flooded into his mind.

He saw every connection.

Every prediction.

Every possible choice.

Millions of outcomes.

He screamed.

Then something changed.

He stopped trying to understand the system.

He listened.

Behind the calculations was a pattern.

A tiny sequence.

A mistake.

No.

Not a mistake.

A message.

Noah smiled through tears.

"I found it."

Elias shouted,

"What?"

"The fourth layer."

Mara stared.

"There is no fourth layer."

Noah shook his head.

"There wasn't."

He pressed one key.

Everything stopped.

The countdown disappeared.

The screens went black.

The machine went silent.

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Then the power returned.

The lights came on.

One screen remained active.

A single sentence appeared.

HUMAN CHOICE ACCEPTED.

Adrian looked at Noah.

"What did you do?"

Noah turned.

"I changed the question."

Elias smiled.

Mara looked confused.

"What question?"

Noah pointed to the screen.

The words changed.

THE SYSTEM WILL NOT CHOOSE.

Then:

THE SYSTEM WILL ASK.

Adrian frowned.

"Ask what?"

Noah looked toward the machine.

"Us."

The speakers activated.

A calm voice filled the room.

WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO SACRIFICE TO CONTROL THE FUTURE?

Nobody answered.

Then a new screen appeared.

Names began scrolling.

Thousands.

Millions.

Political leaders.

Executives.

Generals.

Scientists.

Adrian stared.

"They're all connected."

Elias nodded.

"Helix."

Mara looked horrified.

"No."

Adrian turned toward her.

"What?"

She whispered,

"They're already inside the system."

The machine wasn't planning to control the world.

It had been programmed to expose who was already trying.

Files opened automatically.

Contracts.

Payments.

Secret meetings.

Orders.

Encrypted messages.

Names.

So many names.

Victor stared at the screen.

"This is enough to bring down half the industry."

Frank whispered,

"Not just the industry."

A file appeared.

PROJECT REED AUTHORIZATION.

Adrian opened it.

The signature at the bottom made his blood run cold.

Not Marcus.

Not Mara.

Not Elias.

His father.

But the date was impossible.

It had been signed after his father's death.

Adrian stared.

"No."

Elias looked over his shoulder.

Then his expression changed.

"I know that signature."

"Whose?"

Elias pointed.

"It isn't his."

Victor frowned.

"What?"

Elias looked directly at Adrian.

"Someone has been pretending to be your father."

The room went silent.

Mara backed away.

Adrian felt cold.

"Who?"

Elias stared at the final line.

May you like

Then whispered:

"Your father never died."
