Chapter 13 - The Father in the ShadowAdrian couldn't speak.

His father had died fifteen years ago.
He had attended the funeral.
He had watched the coffin disappear beneath the earth.
He had spent years living with the grief.
Yet the file said otherwise.
Elias opened another document.
Medical records.
Travel records.
Financial transfers.
All under the name Richard Vale.
Adrian felt dizzy.
"Why would my father fake his death?"
Elias looked at Mara.
She lowered her eyes.
"Because he wanted control of the system."
Adrian stared at her.
"You knew."
Mara nodded.
"For years."
"You let me believe I was alone."
"I thought keeping you away would save you."
"From him?"
"From everyone."
Adrian stepped back.
His entire life felt suddenly unreliable.
The machine began displaying satellite images.
A private facility.
Far north.
Buried beneath mountains.
Elias recognized it.
"That's where Richard is."
Adrian looked at him.
"How do you know?"
"Because that's where he kept the original system."
Mara whispered,
"And that's where the final archive is."
Noah looked at the map.
"Room Zero was only the test."
Elias nodded.
"The real system is there."
Adrian stared.
"Then we go."
Mara shook her head.
"It's a trap."
Adrian looked at her.
"Everything has been a trap."
The journey took hours.
The facility was hidden beneath an old mining complex.
No roads led to it.
No signs.
No lights.
Just snow and rock.
They found an entrance beneath a collapsed tunnel.
Adrian carried a flashlight.
Noah walked beside Elias.
Mara followed behind.
Victor and Frank stayed near the rear.
Inside, the tunnels were unnaturally clean.
No rust.
No dust.
Modern sensors tracked their movements.
Then a voice echoed through the corridor.
"Welcome home."
Adrian stopped.
The voice was male.
Calm.
Familiar.
Richard Vale.
Adrian's father.
The door ahead opened.
A man stood in a glass observation room.
Older.
Gray-haired.
Still standing straight.
Still wearing the same expensive suits Adrian remembered from childhood.
Adrian's chest tightened.
"Dad."
Richard smiled.
"You grew up."
Adrian stepped closer.
"You've been alive this whole time."
Richard nodded.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because somebody had to finish what I started."
Adrian's voice trembled.
"You destroyed my family."
Richard shrugged.
"Your family was the problem."
Mara stepped forward.
"You promised Noah would be free."
Richard looked at her.
"I changed my mind."
Noah moved closer to Elias.
Richard smiled.
"So that's him."
Elias stepped between them.
"Don't touch my son."
Richard laughed.
"Your son?"
He looked at Adrian.
"You still haven't told him."
Adrian frowned.
"Told me what?"
Richard pointed toward Noah.
"He's not just Elias's son."
Adrian's stomach dropped.
Richard continued.
"He carries your genetic template."
Adrian looked at Noah.
"What are you saying?"
"That boy was built from all three of us."
Mara closed her eyes.
Richard continued.
"Your intelligence."
"Elias's pattern recognition."
"Mara's neurological resilience."
Noah looked horrified.
"So I'm a machine."
"No."
Richard smiled.
"You're the key to one."
Adrian looked at Elias.
"Is it true?"
Elias nodded.
"We tried to make him human."
"You made him a weapon."
"No."
"But you used my DNA."
"Without your knowledge."
Adrian stared at him.
"Why?"
"Because I needed something unpredictable."
Richard interrupted.
"You needed him because you couldn't control what you created."
He turned toward the giant chamber behind him.
A massive structure stood there.
Larger than anything Adrian had ever seen.
A central core pulsed with blue light.
"The first machine predicted people."
Richard smiled.
"This one predicts civilizations."
Mara shook her head.
"You can't control it."
"I don't need to."
Richard pressed a button.
Doors throughout the facility closed.
Security systems activated.
Richard looked at Noah.
"All I need is for him to connect."
Noah stepped backward.
Elias grabbed his hand.
Richard smiled.
"You have ten minutes."
Adrian looked around.
"Ten minutes until what?"
Richard's expression became almost gentle.
"Until the system launches."
"Launches where?"
Richard pointed to the ceiling.
"Everywhere."
A satellite image appeared.
Hundreds of points spread across the globe.
Adrian stared.
Richard said:
"By sunrise, every major decision-making network on Earth will be connected to the machine."
May you like
He smiled.
"And after that, nobody will make a truly free decision again."
