Chapter 4 - The Night Ethan Stopped BreathingMichael barely slept.

At 5:17 a.m., he sat at the kitchen table with Ethan's medical report in front of him.
Olivia sat across from him.
Neither had spoken for almost ten minutes.
Finally Michael asked:
"What happened?"
Olivia looked down.
"It was the night your mother stayed here."
Michael's face tightened.
"Tell me everything."
"I was asleep."
"I thought you said Ethan was crying."
"He had been crying all night."
Olivia rubbed her hands together.
"I woke up because the room was silent."
Michael looked up.
"What do you mean?"
"He always makes little sounds when he sleeps."
She swallowed.
"That night there was nothing."
"What happened?"
"I ran to the nursery."
Michael waited.
"Ethan wasn't breathing normally."
His fingers tightened around the edge of the table.
"I picked him up. He was limp."
"Did you call 911?"
"Yes."
"What did my mother do?"
Olivia looked at him.
"She told me not to."
"What?"
"She said the ambulance would make things worse."
Michael felt anger rising.
"Why would she say that?"
"I don't know."
"What happened next?"
"Your mother took Ethan from me."
Olivia's eyes filled with tears.
"She said she knew what to do."
Michael leaned forward.
"And then?"
"She held him."
"How long?"
"I don't know."
"Olivia."
"Maybe thirty seconds."
She looked away.
"Then he coughed."
Michael closed his eyes.
"Your mother said it was nothing."
He opened them again.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I did."
Michael froze.
"What?"
"You were here."
"No."
"You were standing right beside her."
Michael couldn't speak.
Olivia reached for her phone.
She opened an audio recording.
Her voice from that night filled the kitchen.
"Michael, wake up."
Then Evelyn's voice.
"Don't call anyone."
Then Michael's own sleepy voice.
"What happened?"
His stomach turned.
He remembered the night.
Or thought he did.
He remembered waking up.
He remembered his mother saying Ethan had had a nightmare.
He remembered Olivia crying.
But not this.
Not the panic.
Not the argument.
The recording continued.
Olivia said:
"He's not breathing properly."
Evelyn answered:
"He's fine."
Then a crash.
A sharp sound.
And Ethan began crying.
The recording ended.
Michael stared at his wife.
"Why did you record this?"
"Because by morning, your mother had convinced you it never happened."
Michael felt the room tilt.
He looked toward the doorway.
Evelyn was standing there.
He hadn't heard her enter.
She smiled.
"You finally listened."
Michael stood.
"Get out."
She didn't move.
"You don't understand what you're doing."
"I understand enough."
Evelyn's eyes hardened.
"You think Olivia is protecting Ethan."
"I know she is."
"No."
Evelyn slowly walked closer.
"Olivia is protecting herself."
Michael shook his head.
"What are you talking about?"
Evelyn reached into her purse.
She pulled out a folded piece of paper.
A DNA test.
Michael stared at the name.
Ethan Bennett.
Then at the result.
He stopped breathing.
"Mom..."
Evelyn whispered:
"You should have checked."
Michael's hands began shaking.
The report didn't say Ethan wasn't his son.
It said something worse.
There was another alleged biological parent listed on the file.
