Chapter 15 - The Child in the PhotographThree months later, Bennett Medical Group had collapsed.

Investigators uncovered years of falsified records, hidden accounts, and illegal arrangements.

The medical foundation was shut down.

Dr. Vale testified.

Daniel disappeared again after giving his statement.

Evelyn surrendered every file she had.

Olivia moved with Michael and Ethan into a smaller house across town.

For the first time, they had no cameras.

No locked nursery.

No footsteps outside the door.

No one telling Olivia how to hold her own child.

Life slowly became normal.

Almost.

One rainy afternoon, Michael sat in Ethan's room while Olivia folded laundry.

Ethan was six months old now.

He laughed when Michael made ridiculous faces.

Olivia smiled.

"I think he's finally happy."

Michael nodded.

"I think we are too."

Then the doorbell rang.

Michael went downstairs.

A courier stood outside.

"There was no return address."

He handed Michael a plain envelope.

Michael opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

He froze.

The photograph showed a baby.

Not Ethan.

Another baby.

Same hospital.

Same year.

Same birthmark.

Michael turned the photograph over.

There was a handwritten message.

You were never supposed to find this child.

His heart began pounding.

Olivia came downstairs.

"What is it?"

Michael couldn't answer.

She took the photograph.

Her face changed.

"I've seen him."

Michael stared.

"When?"

"In the hospital."

"Which hospital?"

"The night Ethan was born."

Michael felt a chill.

"Who is he?"

Olivia looked at the photograph again.

Then she whispered:

"He wasn't supposed to survive."

Michael walked toward the window.

A black car was parked across the street.

Its engine was running.

Someone sat behind the wheel.

Michael picked up his phone.

The car slowly drove away.

Then Ethan began crying upstairs.

Michael ran.

Olivia followed.

They entered the nursery.

Ethan was standing in his crib, crying.

Beside him was another envelope.

Michael opened it with shaking hands.

Inside was a single sentence.

YOUR MOTHER NEVER TOLD YOU WHY SHE CHOSE 2:03 A.M.

Michael looked at Olivia.

"She said it was the time the records were moved."

Olivia shook her head.

"No."

"What?"

She pointed at the paper.

"I remember now."

Michael stared.

"Remember what?"

Olivia's voice trembled.

"2:03 wasn't when the records were changed."

She looked toward Ethan.

"It was when the second baby was born."

Michael felt the room disappear around him.

"Who was the second baby?"

Olivia looked at him.

"I don't know."

A knock came from the nursery door.

Three slow knocks.

Michael turned.

The door was closed.

Nobody was standing outside.

Then his phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A message appeared.

You thought the danger was Evelyn.

Another message arrived.

You thought it was your father.

Then a third.

You were wrong.

Michael looked at Olivia.

The final message appeared.

The person watching your house right now is the person you trusted most.

The baby monitor suddenly activated.

Its screen showed the hallway.

Someone was standing at the end of it.

Tall.

Still.

Watching.

Michael slowly looked toward the nursery door.

The figure on the monitor moved closer.

One step.

Then another.

Ethan began screaming.

Michael grabbed Olivia's hand.

The figure reached the nursery door.

And the baby monitor went black.

At exactly 2:03 A.M., three nights later, Michael would finally discover who had been watching them all along.

But by then, the truth about Ethan would no longer be the thing he feared most.

Because the second child was alive.

And someone had been raising him in the Bennett family for years.

Watching.

May you like

Waiting.

For Michael to finally open the door.
