Chapter 12 - The Father Who Wasn't DeadMichael couldn't breathe.

His father had been dead for six years.
He had attended the funeral.
He had carried the coffin.
He had watched the casket disappear into the ground.
Yet there he stood.
Older.
Thinner.
Alive.
Michael looked at Evelyn.
"You knew."
She nodded.
His father smiled.
"Your mother always did have trouble keeping secrets."
Michael stepped forward.
"Why?"
His father ignored him.
He looked at Ethan.
"Bring me the child."
Michael tightened his arms around the baby.
"No."
The older man frowned.
"You don't understand."
"I understand enough."
"You know nothing."
Michael's voice shook with rage.
"You destroyed my life."
His father smiled faintly.
"Your life was never yours."
Olivia stepped forward.
"You used us."
"I used everyone."
Daniel moved beside Michael.
The father looked at him.
"You should still be hiding."
Daniel answered:
"I hid long enough."
The older man sighed.
"Eleven years."
Then he looked at Michael.
"Do you know why you were given to me?"
Michael didn't answer.
"Because I needed an heir."
Michael stared.
"But you already had one."
"No."
His father pointed at him.
"I had a placeholder."
Michael felt sick.
"You mean me."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because your biological family couldn't be trusted."
Michael looked at Evelyn.
She looked away.
His father continued.
"I built Bennett Medical Group around a secret."
"What secret?"
"People will pay anything to rewrite their bloodline."
Michael's fists clenched.
"You trafficked children."
"I created opportunities."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"Call it whatever lets you sleep."
The father turned toward him.
"You were always sentimental."
Then he looked at Ethan.
"But this child changes everything."
Michael stepped backward.
"What does he know?"
"Nothing."
"Then why?"
His father answered:
"Because he is the only surviving record."
The basement went silent.
Michael finally understood.
Ethan wasn't valuable because of who he was.
He was valuable because of what his birth proved.
The entire network depended on false records.
Ethan's existence could expose them.
Michael held him closer.
"You won't get him."
His father smiled.
"We'll see."
He lifted a remote.
The basement door slammed shut.
Then a countdown appeared on the wall.
Dr. Vale looked horrified.
"What have you done?"
Michael's father smiled.
"Removed the witnesses."
The countdown continued.
Evelyn grabbed Michael.
"There's another exit."
"Where?"
She pointed beneath the floor.
"Your father's office."
Michael stared.
"You knew?"
"I built it."
"Why?"
Her voice broke.
"Because I knew one day we'd need to run from him."
The countdown reached 40.
Michael dropped to his knees.
He searched the floor.
Found a hidden latch.
Pulled it.
A narrow staircase opened.
They descended.
Behind them, the countdown kept ticking.
Michael heard his father's voice above them.
"Run, Michael."
A pause.
May you like
"You're finally learning what this family does best."
The basement exploded into darkness.
