Chapter 11 - The Man Who Came BackMichael couldn't move.

Daniel stood twenty feet away.

Older.

Scarred.

Alive.

And holding Ethan as if he had held him a thousand times.

Olivia whispered:

"Daniel."

He looked at her.

"I never wanted you involved."

Michael stepped forward.

"Give me my son."

Daniel immediately handed Ethan to him.

Michael grabbed the baby.

Ethan stirred.

Then settled.

For the first time all night, Michael felt something close to relief.

"Why did you disappear?"

Daniel looked toward Evelyn.

"Because she saved my life."

Michael stared.

"You let me believe you were dead."

"I had to."

"You let my father tell me you died."

"Your father didn't know."

Michael frowned.

"Then who did?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Dr. Vale did.

"Everyone who mattered."

Michael looked around the room.

"Explain."

Daniel took a breath.

"Your father discovered the fertility records had been compromised."

"Compromised by whom?"

"The people who created them."

Michael looked at the files.

"They used families."

"Yes."

"They manipulated records."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Daniel's eyes hardened.

"Money."

Silence.

Daniel explained that wealthy clients had paid to obtain children with carefully selected genetic histories.

Records were altered.

Identities were hidden.

Children disappeared into families who believed they had no connection to the process.

Michael looked at Ethan.

"Was Ethan one of them?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"Then why are they after him?"

"Because someone used Ethan's birth to hide something else."

Michael waited.

Daniel looked at Olivia.

"She was pregnant when she met your father."

Michael stared at Olivia.

She shook her head.

"No."

Daniel continued.

"Not with Ethan."

Michael froze.

"What?"

Olivia began crying.

"Daniel, stop."

He turned to her.

"They need to know."

"Know what?"

She looked at Michael.

"There was another baby."

Michael's mind went blank.

Daniel spoke softly.

"The first baby was stillborn."

Michael stared.

"The records were altered."

"And Ethan?"

Olivia pressed her hand over her mouth.

"Ethan was born months later."

Michael's face changed.

"Then what happened?"

Daniel answered.

"They used the identity of the dead child."

Michael looked at Ethan.

His son.

His whole life.

His mother.

His wife.

Everything.

Then Evelyn whispered:

"I thought I was protecting Ethan."

Michael looked at her.

"From whom?"

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

"From your father."

Michael shook his head.

"He was dead."

Evelyn looked toward the ceiling.

"No."

Michael's blood ran cold.

"He isn't."

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

"You weren't supposed to tell him that yet."

Then the basement door opened.

A man's voice echoed down the stairs.

"You've all made this very difficult."

Michael slowly turned.

A tall figure stepped into the light.

May you like

He recognized the face from old photographs.

His father.
