Chapter 7 - The Clinic of the ForgottenThey drove through the night.

Nobody spoke for the first hour.
The clinic stood two hundred miles outside the city, hidden behind pine forests and private farmland.
Official records said it had been abandoned decades ago.
The satellite images showed only an empty building.
But the gate was guarded.
Heavy steel.
Cameras.
Armed men.
Salvatore looked at Emilia.
"You knew."
"I suspected."
"That's not good enough."
She didn't answer.
Adelaide sat beside him.
Her hands were folded in her lap.
"Your father asked me never to come back."
"Why?"
"Because the clinic wasn't a hospital."
"What was it?"
"A holding facility."
"For whom?"
"People the organization wanted erased."
The gate opened.
Nobody stopped them.
That scared Salvatore more than resistance would have.
Inside, the hallways were spotless.
Too spotless.
A nurse in gray walked past without looking at them.
Salvatore's men kept their hands near their weapons.
At the end of the hall was an elevator.
Emilia entered a code.
The doors opened.
They descended.
One floor.
Two.
Three.
The fourth floor had no buttons.
Adelaide pressed her palm against a scanner.
The elevator moved again.
When the doors opened, Salvatore heard voices.
A man's voice.
Older.
Weak.
But unmistakable.
"Adelaide?"
She stopped.
The air left her lungs.
Salvatore pushed past her.
A room opened.
Inside was a bed.
Medical equipment.
A monitor.
And a man with silver hair.
Salvatore stared.
His father looked back.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then Luciano whispered:
"My boy."
Salvatore couldn't speak.
He had imagined this moment his entire life.
In every fantasy, his father looked younger.
Stronger.
Proud.
Not like this.
Older.
Thin.
Alive.
Luciano slowly raised a hand.
Salvatore took it.
His father's fingers closed around his.
"You grew up."
Salvatore's eyes burned.
"You were dead."
Luciano closed his eyes.
"I had to be."
"For thirty years."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Luciano looked toward Adelaide.
"Because they would have killed you."
"Who?"
Luciano's breathing became weaker.
"The people who own the family."
Salvatore frowned.
"The family belongs to us."
Luciano smiled sadly.
"No."
He pointed toward a locked cabinet.
"We belonged to them."
Salvatore opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Every major Moretti event.
Every politician.
Every judge.
Every business partner.
Every family member.
And there was one photograph that stopped him.
Nolan.
Standing beside a young woman.
Ella's mother.
Salvatore stared.
"Why are they together?"
Luciano answered:
"Because she was my daughter."
He stopped breathing.
"What?"
Luciano looked at Adelaide.
"Tell him."
Adelaide whispered:
"Your father had another child."
Salvatore looked at the photograph again.
The woman was his half-sister.
Ella was his niece.
Nolan had married into the family.
And suddenly the entire nightmare rearranged itself.
Nolan wasn't an outsider.
He had been family.
Luciano continued.
"He married her because he needed access."
"Access to what?"
"The vault."
Salvatore asked:
"What is in the vault?"
Luciano looked terrified.
"The names."
"Which names?"
"The men who control the network."
Salvatore stared.
Then Luciano grabbed his wrist.
"There is something else."
"What?"
"Your brother Matteo..."
A monitor beside the bed began to beep.
Luciano's eyes widened.
"He's here."
Everyone turned toward the hallway.
Footsteps approached.
Slow.
Measured.
A man appeared in the doorway.
Salvatore raised his weapon.
The man had his face.
Not exactly.
Older.
Harder.
But the resemblance was unmistakable.
Adelaide whispered:
"Matteo."
The man smiled.
May you like
Then he looked directly at Salvatore.
"Hello, little brother."
