Chapter 2 - Five Empty DaysThe estate went quiet within minutes.

Guests who had arrived laughing suddenly remembered urgent appointments.
Servants disappeared through side doors.
Musicians packed their instruments without being asked.
Nobody wanted to be present when Salvatore Moretti stopped being polite.
He carried Adelaide into the house himself.
She protested the entire way.
"I'm not an invalid."
"I know."
"Then put me down."
"No."
"I raised you better than this."
Salvatore looked at her.
"Apparently not well enough, because you let someone put a chain around your neck."
Adelaide's expression broke.
He carried her into the library and lowered her carefully into a chair.
Ella followed them.
She held her rabbit with both hands.
Salvatore knelt.
"You told me five days."
Ella nodded.
"Did you see Grandma eat anything?"
"A little water."
"Anything else?"
Ella shook her head.
"Sometimes they gave her ice."
Salvatore's eyes hardened.
"Who?"
"Nolan."
Hattie appeared in the doorway.
"She's four. She doesn't understand."
Ella immediately moved behind Salvatore.
That told him enough.
Hattie noticed the movement.
"Don't hide behind him."
Ella squeezed his jacket.
Salvatore stood.
"You can leave."
Hattie stared at him.
"This is my house."
"No."
She blinked.
"What?"
"You are staying here because I allowed my mother to trust you."
Hattie scoffed.
"Nolan and I run this place now."
Salvatore smiled.
There was nothing warm in it.
"Who told you that?"
Nolan appeared behind Hattie.
"I did."
Salvatore's smile vanished.
Nolan walked into the library.
"We need to discuss this like adults."
"You starved my mother for five days."
"She refused to cooperate."
"You chained her."
"She kept attempting to escape."
"What was she supposed to escape from?"
Nolan hesitated.
That pause was more valuable than an answer.
Salvatore stepped closer.
"What did you want from her?"
Nolan's jaw clenched.
"She has something."
"What?"
"We don't know."
Salvatore stared at him.
"So you tortured a seventy-five-year-old woman to find something you didn't even know existed?"
Hattie interrupted.
"It isn't torture."
Salvatore looked at her neck.
Then back at Adelaide.
"Tell that to the chain."
Adelaide suddenly spoke.
"Enough."
Everyone turned.
She slowly stood.
Salvatore moved toward her.
"Mom, sit down."
"No."
She looked directly at Nolan.
"You have already lost."
Nolan laughed.
"You haven't seen anything yet."
Adelaide's face remained calm.
"You think you have."
Hattie looked nervous.
Nolan stepped toward Adelaide.
"Where is it?"
Adelaide said nothing.
"The ledger."
Salvatore's eyes narrowed.
"What ledger?"
Nolan looked at him.
Adelaide immediately stepped between them.
"Do not."
Salvatore lowered his voice.
"What ledger?"
Adelaide whispered, "Not here."
Nolan smiled.
"Excellent."
Salvatore's attention snapped toward him.
Nolan continued.
"Ask her about the black ledger."
Adelaide's expression changed.
Just slightly.
But Salvatore saw it.
He had known his mother his entire life.
He knew every version of her silence.
This was not ordinary fear.
This was the fear of someone who knew exactly what could happen if the wrong truth surfaced.
Salvatore turned toward the door.
"Nobody leaves."
Nolan laughed.
"You don't control this estate."
Salvatore pulled his phone from his pocket.
One call.
That's all it took.
Thirty seconds later, the first black SUV entered the gates.
Then another.
Then another.
Men in dark suits stepped out.
The staff froze.
Hattie backed away.
Nolan's face went white.
Salvatore looked at him.
"Now we can talk."
But before he could continue, a scream came from the hallway.
Ella.
Salvatore spun around.
The little girl was pointing toward the dining room.
Someone had knocked over a cabinet.
Behind it was a narrow opening in the wall.
And inside the opening was a small metal box.
Adelaide went completely still.
"Mom?"
She whispered one sentence.
"Don't open it."
Salvatore walked closer.
The box was old.
Blackened at the corners.
A tiny lock held it shut.
On top was a handwritten name.
ADelaide Moretti.
Below it was another name.
Luciano Moretti.
Salvatore's deceased father.
His pulse jumped.
He picked up the box.
Nolan shouted, "Put it down!"
Salvatore looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because that's not yours."
Salvatore laughed quietly.
"It's my father's."
Nolan lunged.
Two Moretti men grabbed him.
Hattie screamed.
Adelaide closed her eyes.
Salvatore looked at her.
"You knew."
She whispered, "Yes."
"What is inside?"
Adelaide took a trembling breath.
"Everything."
Salvatore looked at the locked box.
"Everything about what?"
She looked toward the windows.
Then toward the armed men.
Finally, she looked at him.
"Everything that can destroy this family."
Salvatore studied the lock.
Then he noticed something.
There was a second piece of metal hanging beneath it.
A key.
The same key Ella had seen lying beneath the banquet table.
He turned back.
"No."
Adelaide stared at him.
"That wasn't the key."
"What?"
"The key you need is not here."
"Then what is this?"
Adelaide whispered, "A warning."
Suddenly the house lights went out.
A gunshot exploded somewhere in the dark.
Ella screamed.
Adelaide grabbed Salvatore's arm.
May you like
And a second voice whispered from behind them.
"You're too late."
