Chapter 14 - The Last Betrayal"Hattie."

She looked at Salvatore.
"I'm sorry."
Salvatore stopped.
Adelaide stood frozen.
"Why?"
Hattie swallowed.
"Because you don't know what happens after the network falls."
"Then tell me."
"They will come for Ella."
"I'll protect her."
"You can't protect her from everyone."
Hattie raised the gun slightly.
"I can."
"By killing my mother?"
"No."
She lowered her voice.
"By taking her place."
Salvatore stared.
Hattie looked at Adelaide.
"Your mother carries the final code."
Adelaide nodded.
"I suspected."
Hattie continued.
"Years ago, Luciano divided the vault code into three parts."
"Who has them?"
"Luciano had one."
"Emilia had one."
"And Adelaide."
Salvatore looked at his mother.
"You never told me."
Adelaide whispered:
"I wanted you to have a life."
Hattie said:
"The code can erase the network's ownership records."
Salvatore understood.
Without those records, the surviving members would lose access to the money.
The network would fracture.
People would come hunting.
Hattie lowered her gun.
"I want to destroy it."
Nolan's voice came from the corridor.
"You always were sentimental."
He stepped into view.
Salvatore turned.
Nolan held a detonator.
"One button."
He smiled.
"The entire lower facility collapses."
Matteo stepped forward.
"You're bluffing."
Nolan pressed the button halfway.
The floor shook.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
He was not bluffing.
"There are explosives under every structural support."
Salvatore stared.
"How much time?"
"Three minutes."
Ella began crying.
"Uncle."
Salvatore looked at her.
He remembered the chain around Adelaide's neck.
The cold plate of leftovers.
Five days without food.
Every lie.
Every missing person.
Every secret.
He looked at Nolan.
"You did all this for the vault."
Nolan shook his head.
"No."
"For power?"
"No."
"Money?"
"No."
Nolan's eyes moved to Ella.
"For inheritance."
Salvatore's face hardened.
Nolan smiled.
"Your daughter is worth billions."
Salvatore understood the true plan.
Nolan never cared about the criminal network.
He wanted the legitimate inheritance.
The vault contained proof that Ella was the legal heir.
If Salvatore died, Nolan would become guardian.
If Adelaide died, Nolan would control the remaining trust.
He had engineered everything.
The starvation.
The chain.
The missing records.
The fake attacks.
The clinic.
Even the grandmother.
Salvatore looked toward Matteo.
"Get Ella out."
Matteo nodded.
Adelaide grabbed Salvatore's arm.
"Don't."
"I have to."
"No."
He kissed her forehead.
"Not this time."
He stepped toward Nolan.
"Tell me the code."
Nolan laughed.
"You think I'll help you?"
Salvatore reached for his phone.
He played the recording from the vault.
Nolan's confession.
Every word.
Every threat.
Nolan's face went pale.
"You recorded me."
"Yes."
"You won't release that."
"It's already released."
Nolan looked at the broadcast screens.
His own face appeared everywhere.
He panicked.
The world was watching.
The network was watching.
His power was gone.
He fired.
Salvatore moved.
The bullet struck the wall.
Matteo fired once.
Nolan fell.
The detonator slipped from his hand.
The countdown continued.
00:51.
Salvatore grabbed it.
There was no way to stop the sequence.
Adelaide ran toward him.
"Leave it."
"No."
"You'll die."
"I'm not leaving this place with that thing active."
He remembered his father.
The clinic.
The hidden room.
The old recordings.
Then he saw the final switch.
A manual override.
Requires three keys.
One from each bloodline.
He had one.
Matteo had another.
Adelaide had the third.
They placed their hands on the scanner.
The system rejected them.
Red.
Again.
Rejected.
Ella stepped forward.
She placed her little hand on the final panel.
The system turned green.
The countdown stopped.
00:00.
Silence.
Everyone stared.
Then the entire facility came alive.
Doors opened.
Lights turned white.
The network files began copying to external servers.
The secrets were no longer trapped underground.
The family had lost control of its own history.
But as Salvatore held Ella, Adelaide suddenly whispered:
"There's still one thing."
He looked at her.
"What?"
She looked toward the dead grandmother.
"She wasn't the mastermind."
Salvatore went still.
"Who was?"
Adelaide stared at the final screen.
A name appeared.
May you like
Someone Salvatore had never suspected.
His father.
