Chapter 12 - The BloodlineSalvatore couldn't speak.

He looked at Adelaide.
"You knew?"
She nodded.
"How long?"
"Since before she was born."
"You let me believe she was my niece."
"Your father forced me."
"Why?"
"Because Nolan knew."
Salvatore closed his eyes.
The pieces locked together.
Nolan had married Isabella.
He believed Ella was his.
But he had suspected the truth.
So he kept Adelaide imprisoned.
He needed the blood key.
He needed the ledger.
And he needed Salvatore far away.
Salvatore opened his eyes.
"Where is Isabella?"
Adelaide whispered:
"Alive."
"Where?"
"The vault."
They rushed toward the old chapel.
The grandmother was gone.
Her wheelchair was abandoned.
A hidden door stood open behind the altar.
Inside was a massive steel vault.
Salvatore inserted the memory card.
A keypad appeared.
The screen asked for a blood sample.
Ella stepped closer.
"No."
Salvatore pulled her back.
"We are not using her."
Matteo looked at the screen.
"Then we'll need another key."
Salvatore thought.
Both branches.
His blood.
Ella's blood.
Two generations.
He placed his palm on the scanner.
Nothing.
Matteo tried.
Nothing.
Adelaide stepped forward.
"Let me."
The scanner turned green.
The vault unlocked.
Inside was not gold.
Not money.
Not weapons.
Shelves.
Files.
Thousands of them.
Every secret the Moretti family had collected for nearly a century.
But at the center was one glass box.
Inside sat a handwritten journal.
Salvatore picked it up.
The cover read:
THE ORIGINAL ACCOUNT.
He opened it.
The first entry was written by his grandfather.
It described the creation of an underground network.
The second entry listed judges.
The third named police officers.
The fourth described politicians.
Then Salvatore found the final section.
THE TRAITOR.
There was one name.
Nolan's.
But beside it was another.
Adelaide.
Salvatore froze.
His mother was listed as a conspirator.
"Mom."
She closed her eyes.
"Listen to the whole entry."
He read.
Adelaide Moretti was ordered to surrender the child.
She refused.
She falsified the blood records.
She hid the true heir.
She sabotaged the vault.
And she allowed the network to believe the child had been erased.
Salvatore looked at her.
"You betrayed them."
"Yes."
"You lied to me."
"Yes."
"To protect Ella."
"Yes."
He wanted to be furious.
But he remembered the chain.
The five empty days.
The fear in her eyes.
His mother's entire life had been built around protecting him.
She had protected Ella too.
A sound came from the far end of the vault.
Footsteps.
Nolan.
He entered with Isabella at gunpoint.
Ella screamed.
"Mommy!"
Isabella stared at Salvatore.
Tears filled her eyes.
"I'm sorry."
Nolan smiled.
"It's time to finish this."
Salvatore slowly stepped forward.
"You starved my mother."
"She knew where the journal was."
"You chained her."
"She wouldn't speak."
"You took my daughter."
Nolan shrugged.
"I took what belongs to the family."
Salvatore raised his weapon.
Nolan pressed the gun against Isabella's head.
"One step closer."
Salvatore stopped.
Nolan looked at the grandmother's journal.
"Give me the original account."
"No."
Nolan smiled.
"Then Isabella dies."
Adelaide whispered:
"Salvatore..."
He looked at his mother.
Then at Ella.
Then at the journal.
He placed it on the floor.
Nolan walked forward.
He reached down.
And at that moment, Isabella smiled.
Salvatore saw it.
She was not afraid.
She whispered:
"Now."
The vault doors slammed shut.
Nolan's men were trapped outside.
The lights went red.
The sprinkler system activated.
A hidden alarm screamed.
And Adelaide whispered:
May you like
"The vault was never designed to keep people out."
"It was designed to keep people in."
