Chapter 9: The File That Was Never Supposed to Exist

The hospital hallway was chaos.

Doctors rushed between rooms.

Patients and visitors looked around as security guards moved quickly through the building.

But inside Room 307, nobody cared about the noise anymore.

Everyone was focused on one thing.

The missing birth record.

Ethan stood completely still.

His entire life had become a mystery built from missing pieces.

First, he discovered his mother had not abandoned him.

Then he learned his father had hidden the truth.

Then Margaret admitted she had played a role in separating him from Anna.

And now...

Someone was trying to erase the only document that could prove what really happened.

His birth record.

The one thing that could connect him to the past.

"Who knew we were looking for it?"

Daniel's voice was low.

The nurse shook her head.

"Nobody outside this room."

Richard immediately answered:

"That's not true."

Everyone looked at him.

Richard stared at Ethan.

"Someone has been watching you."

Ethan frowned.

"Watching me?"

Richard nodded.

"For a long time."

The words made Ethan uncomfortable.

"What are you talking about?"

Richard walked toward the window.

"Your entire life, you thought you were living normally."

He looked outside at the storm.

"But people were waiting."

"Waiting for what?"

Richard turned around.

"For you to remember."

A cold feeling moved through Ethan.

"I don't remember anything."

Richard's eyes became serious.

"Exactly."

Nobody spoke.

Ethan looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

Richard hesitated.

Then he said:

"When you were a baby, something happened."

Daniel immediately interrupted.

"Richard."

But Richard ignored him.

"The night Anna disappeared, you saw something."

Ethan frowned.

"I was a baby."

"Yes."

Richard nodded.

"But babies remember more than people think."

Ethan looked confused.

"What did I see?"

Richard's expression changed.

"Something someone wanted hidden."

Margaret suddenly stood.

"Enough."

Everyone turned.

Her voice was stronger than before.

"Richard, don't manipulate him."

Richard looked at her.

"Manipulate?"

He smiled bitterly.

"You spent twenty-six years hiding the truth from him."

Margaret's face tightened.

"And you spent twenty-six years lying to him."

The two stared at each other.

Two people who had both protected Ethan.

And both hurt him.

Ethan stepped between them.

"Stop."

His voice was louder.

"I don't care who is right anymore."

Everyone became quiet.

"I just want the truth."

He looked at the nurse.

"Where is the file?"

The nurse swallowed.

"The records room."

"Take me there."

Daniel immediately shook his head.

"No."

Ethan looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because whoever broke in might still be there."

Ethan smiled coldly.

"For twenty-six years, everyone has told me what I can and cannot know."

He stepped toward the door.

"I'm done listening."

The hospital records room was located in the basement.

Away from the crowded floors.

Away from the noise.

A place where old memories were stored and forgotten.

The elevator descended slowly.

Inside were Ethan, Daniel, Margaret, and Richard.

Nobody spoke.

The silence was uncomfortable.

Finally, Ethan looked at Richard.

"Did you love my mother?"

The question surprised everyone.

Richard looked at him.

"What?"

"Anna."

Richard's expression changed.

For the first time, the powerful businessman looked like an ordinary man.

A man remembering something painful.

"Yes."

The answer came immediately.

Ethan didn't expect that.

"Then why did you let her disappear?"

Richard looked down.

"Because loving someone doesn't always mean you can save them."

The elevator doors opened.

Nobody responded.

The basement corridor was dark.

The lights flickered.

The records room door was slightly open.

Daniel immediately raised his hand.

Everyone stopped.

Something was wrong.

The lock had been broken.

Inside, hundreds of files covered the floor.

Someone had searched the entire room.

But not randomly.

Only one section was destroyed.

The section containing records from twenty-six years ago.

Ethan walked inside slowly.

His eyes moved across the mess.

Then he saw something.

A single file sitting on the desk.

Untouched.

Waiting.

Daniel noticed it too.

"Don't touch it."

But Ethan was already walking toward it.

Because he knew.

Someone wanted him to find it.

He opened the file.

Inside were hospital documents.

Birth records.

Patient information.

And one name.

Anna Carter.

His mother.

His hands trembled.

Then he saw something that made his heart stop.

The birth certificate.

Child's name:

Unknown.

Mother:

Anna Carter.

Father:

Unknown.

Ethan frowned.

"Father unknown?"

Richard stepped closer.

His face changed.

"No."

Ethan looked at him.

"What?"

Richard stared at the document.

"That is impossible."

"Why?"

Richard didn't answer.

Ethan continued searching.

Then he found another paper hidden underneath.

A handwritten note.

Not from the hospital.

Not official.

Just a message.

Three lines.

"The child must never know."

"The Carter name must continue."

"Erase the father's identity."

Ethan's breathing became heavier.

Someone had intentionally removed his father's name.

But why?

He turned the page.

And beneath the blacked-out section...

Was a faint mark.

A name had been covered.

But not completely.

Ethan moved the paper toward the light.

Slowly.

The hidden letters appeared.

Everyone in the room stared.

Because the name under the black ink was not Richard Carter.

It was someone else.

Someone whose identity changed everything.

Someone connected to the Carter family.

Ethan whispered:

"No..."

Richard stepped back.

His face was filled with shock.

Because he recognized the name immediately.

Daniel looked at him.

"Richard?"

Richard didn't answer.

Ethan looked at the paper again.

The hidden name became clearer.

Victor Carter.

His grandfather.

The man who was supposedly dead.

The man Richard claimed had controlled everything.

The man who had ordered Anna to disappear.

But then something impossible happened.

A sound came from the end of the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Someone was walking toward them.

Everyone turned.

A shadow appeared under the flickering light.

Then a voice spoke.

A voice that made Richard freeze.

A voice that Ethan had never heard before.

But Richard knew instantly.

"Looking for me?"

The figure stepped forward.

An old man.

Gray hair.

Cold eyes.

A familiar face.

Richard whispered:

"No..."

The old man smiled.

"Hello, son."

Ethan stared.

His grandfather.

Victor Carter.

Alive.

Standing in front of him.

The man who was supposed to have been dead for fifteen years.

Victor looked at Ethan.

Then at the file in his hand.

"You finally found it."

Ethan couldn't speak.

Victor smiled.

"But you found the wrong truth."

The lights suddenly went out.

And in the darkness, Victor said one sentence that changed everything:

"Ethan Carter was never my grandson."

The basement fell silent.

And when the lights came back...

Victor was gone.
