Chapter 7: The Woman Who Left Behind a Warning

The emergency lights painted the hospital hallway red.

Every few seconds, the alarm echoed through the building.

Patients looked around in confusion.

Nurses hurried from room to room.

But inside Room 307, nobody moved.

Because everyone was focused on one person.

Richard Carter.

Ethan's father.

Or at least, the man Ethan had called father for twenty-six years.

Richard stood in the doorway with the same calm expression he always wore.

The same expression he used during business meetings.

The same expression he used when reporters asked difficult questions.

A face that revealed nothing.

Ethan hated that face now.

Because he realized something.

He had spent his entire life trying to understand his father.

But maybe his father had spent his entire life making sure Ethan never understood him.

"You have no right to come here."

Daniel's voice was cold.

Richard looked at him.

"Still pretending you're the hero?"

Daniel stepped forward.

"You know what you did."

Richard smiled.

"And you know what you failed to do."

The words created a strange tension.

Ethan noticed.

They weren't arguing like enemies who just met.

They were arguing like two people who had been fighting the same battle for decades.

"Stop."

Ethan's voice cut through the room.

Both men looked at him.

"I want answers."

Richard looked relieved.

"Good."

He turned toward the hallway.

"Then come with me."

Ethan didn't move.

"Why should I trust you?"

For the first time, Richard looked hurt.

Only for a second.

Then his face returned to normal.

"Because I am the only person here who has loved you since the day you were born."

Margaret suddenly spoke.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

The elderly woman slowly stood.

"That is the lie you have repeated for twenty-six years."

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"Margaret."

"You told him Anna abandoned him."

Her voice became stronger.

"You told him she didn't care."

Richard said nothing.

"How can you say you loved him when you erased the woman who gave him life?"

The room became silent.

Ethan looked at Richard.

Waiting.

Richard sighed.

Then he said something unexpected.

"Because if I told him the truth, he would have died."

Nobody moved.

Ethan frowned.

"What?"

Richard looked at him.

"You think I wanted to hide your mother?"

His voice changed.

Not angry.

Tired.

"You think I wanted to destroy your childhood?"

He pointed toward Margaret.

"You don't know what happened."

Margaret shook her head.

"I know exactly what happened."

Richard looked at her.

"No. You know what Anna told you."

That sentence changed everything.

Ethan noticed.

Margaret's expression shifted.

A small hesitation.

Again.

The same hesitation from before.

And Ethan hated it.

Because he was beginning to realize something.

Everyone had secrets.

Everyone was giving him pieces of the truth.

But nobody was giving him the whole picture.

"Tell me."

Ethan looked at his father.

"Tell me what happened."

Richard was silent for a moment.

Then he walked closer.

"Your mother was not just being chased by me."

Ethan listened carefully.

"She was being chased by people far more dangerous."

Daniel interrupted.

"Don't do this."

Richard ignored him.

"Anna discovered something."

"What?"

"That the people behind my company weren't just criminals."

Richard looked at Ethan.

"They were willing to kill anyone who exposed them."

The room became colder.

"Your mother knew she was in danger."

Ethan whispered:

"Then why didn't she take me?"

Richard looked down.

"Because she couldn't."

"Why?"

Richard's answer came quietly.

"Because someone had already found you."

Ethan froze.

"What?"

Richard continued.

"The night Anna disappeared, someone broke into our house."

Nobody spoke.

"She had only minutes."

Ethan felt his heart pounding.

"What happened?"

Richard looked toward the window.

"Anna gave you to me."

Ethan stared.

"No."

"She did."

Richard's voice became softer.

"She put you in my arms and told me one thing."

"What?"

Richard looked directly into his eyes.

"Protect him."

The words shocked Ethan.

Because they sounded exactly opposite to everything Margaret had said.

"Then why did you tell me she left?"

Richard looked away.

"Because I had no choice."

"Everyone says that."

Ethan's voice became angry.

"Everyone always says they had no choice."

A long silence followed.

Then Richard reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small object.

An old necklace.

Ethan immediately recognized it.

Not because he had seen it before.

Because he had seen a drawing of it.

A necklace from the picture Margaret showed him.

"Your mother gave this to you."

Richard held it out.

"She wanted you to have it when you were old enough."

Ethan didn't take it.

"Why are you showing me this now?"

Richard's eyes became serious.

"Because yesterday, someone tried to steal it from my house."

Daniel's face changed.

"What?"

Richard looked at him.

"They know."

Silence.

"Who?"

Richard looked at Margaret.

Then Daniel.

Then Ethan.

"The people who destroyed your mother's life."

A sudden sound interrupted them.

A notification.

Everyone looked toward Ethan's phone.

A message had arrived.

Unknown number.

Ethan opened it.

His hands froze.

A picture appeared.

A woman.

Older.

But still recognizable.

His mother.

Anna.

Alive.

Ethan's breath stopped.

Below the picture was a message:

"Your father lied. Your mother never disappeared."

Then another message appeared.

"Ask Margaret what she did the night Anna died."

The room went completely silent.

Ethan slowly raised his eyes.

Everyone looked at Margaret.

The elderly woman who had spent hours telling him about kindness and truth.

Her face had turned pale.

"Mrs. Hayes..."

Ethan's voice shook.

"What does this mean?"

Margaret didn't answer.

She simply closed her eyes.

And whispered something that made Ethan's entire body go cold.

"I was hoping you would never find out."

Daniel looked at his mother.

"Mom..."

Margaret opened her eyes.

Full of pain.

Full of regret.

"Because the person who separated you from your mother..."

She looked at Ethan.

"Was not Richard."

A pause.

"It was me."

The room froze.

And Ethan realized the truth was far more dangerous than he imagined.

May you like

Because the person who promised to reveal the truth...

Was the person who had hidden it first.
