Chapter 5: The Truth Hidden Behind a Name

The room felt like it had stopped existing.

The storm outside continued raging, but inside Room 307, the only sound was the slow beeping of the machines beside Michael's bed.

Ethan stood between two versions of his own life.

On one side was Margaret Hayes.

The woman who claimed she knew the truth about his birth.

The woman who said his father had hidden a terrible secret.

On the other side was Richard Carter.

The man who raised him.

The man whose voice had guided him since childhood.

The man who was now saying the person Ethan thought was helping him had betrayed him.

And Ethan had no idea who to believe.

"Dad..."

His voice was barely a whisper.

Richard stepped further into the room.

"Ethan, leave this place."

His eyes moved toward Margaret.

"She is using you."

Margaret remained silent.

But Daniel immediately stepped forward.

"Watch your words, Richard."

Richard looked at him.

"You haven't changed, Daniel."

Daniel's face hardened.

"Neither have you."

Ethan looked between them.

"You two know each other?"

Neither man answered.

That silence told him everything.

They weren't strangers.

They had a history.

A dark one.

Richard adjusted his coat calmly.

"Ethan, you don't understand what's happening."

"No."

Ethan shook his head.

"You don't understand."

Richard stopped.

For the first time, Ethan saw something unusual in his father's eyes.

Surprise.

"You spent my entire life telling me my mother left."

Richard said nothing.

"You never showed me a picture."

Silence.

"You never told me her name."

Richard's expression tightened.

"And now I find out everyone knows more about my own life than I do."

The words echoed through the room.

Ethan had always believed he was confident.

But confidence built on a lie was nothing more than a castle made of glass.

Beautiful.

Until someone touched it.

Then everything shattered.

Richard sighed.

"Ethan, some truths are dangerous."

"Convenient."

Richard looked at him.

"What?"

"It's convenient that every time I ask questions, the answer is always that I'm not ready."

Ethan stepped closer.

"Maybe I was never ready because you never wanted me to know."

Richard's face changed slightly.

A small crack.

Almost invisible.

But Ethan saw it.

The old Ethan would have ignored it.

The new Ethan couldn't.

Then Margaret spoke.

"Richard, tell him about Anna."

Richard looked at her.

His jaw tightened.

"Don't say her name."

"Why?"

Margaret's voice remained calm.

"Because you know exactly what happened."

Ethan looked at his father.

"Who was Anna?"

Richard looked away.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he answered:

"Your mother."

The room went silent.

It was the first time Ethan had heard him say it.

Not "your biological mother."

Not "the woman who gave birth to you."

Just...

Your mother.

And somehow that hurt more.

"Why did she leave?"

Richard closed his eyes briefly.

When he opened them again, his expression was colder.

"Because she made a choice."

"What choice?"

"She chose someone else."

Ethan frowned.

"Someone else?"

Richard looked at Michael.

And everyone in the room understood.

Ethan's eyes widened.

"Michael?"

Margaret immediately shook her head.

"Don't listen to him."

But Richard continued.

"Your mother was involved with Daniel."

The accusation hit like a shockwave.

Ethan looked at Daniel.

"No..."

Daniel looked furious.

"He's lying."

Richard smiled slightly.

"Am I?"

The tension became unbearable.

Ethan looked at Margaret.

"Tell me."

She hesitated.

That hesitation frightened him.

"Tell me the truth."

Margaret looked down.

"Anna knew Daniel."

Ethan felt his chest tighten.

"But..."

She continued quickly.

"They were friends."

Richard interrupted.

"More than friends."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Enough."

Richard looked at him.

"Still protecting her after all these years?"

Daniel clenched his fists.

Ethan noticed.

There was pain in his face.

Not guilt.

Pain.

And that confused him.

Because guilty people usually looked away.

Daniel looked like someone remembering something he couldn't change.

Margaret touched Ethan's arm.

"Your mother loved you more than anything."

"Then why did she leave me?"

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

"Because she believed someone was going to hurt you."

The words made everyone freeze.

Ethan looked at Richard.

Richard's expression remained unreadable.

"Who?"

Margaret whispered:

"Your father."

The accusation hung in the air.

Richard suddenly laughed.

Not loudly.

Not happily.

A quiet laugh filled with disbelief.

"You still tell that story?"

Margaret looked at him.

"Because it's true."

Richard stepped closer.

"Then tell him everything."

Everyone became silent.

Richard looked at Ethan.

"Tell him what happened the night Anna disappeared."

Margaret said nothing.

Richard smiled.

"Go ahead."

Ethan looked at Margaret.

"Why aren't you answering?"

The elderly woman looked away.

And that frightened Ethan more than any accusation.

Because until now, Margaret had always seemed certain.

But now...

She looked afraid.

Richard noticed.

"Interesting, isn't it?"

Ethan turned toward him.

"What?"

"She told you I was the villain."

Richard pointed toward Margaret.

"But she didn't tell you what she did."

The room became colder.

Ethan looked at Margaret.

"What did you do?"

No answer.

"Mrs. Hayes?"

Still nothing.

Richard walked toward the table.

He picked up the old photograph.

"The night your mother disappeared..."

He placed the picture down.

"She wasn't running away from me."

Ethan stared.

"Then who was she running from?"

Richard looked directly at him.

"From the truth."

Suddenly, Michael's heart monitor changed.

The steady beeping became faster.

Everyone turned.

Michael's eyes slowly opened.

After being unconscious for hours...

He was awake.

His weak eyes moved around the room.

Then stopped on Ethan.

His lips moved.

A whisper escaped.

"Ethan..."

Everyone froze.

Because Michael had never met Ethan before.

At least...

That was what Ethan believed.

Daniel rushed to the bed.

"Michael, don't speak."

But Michael ignored him.

With all his remaining strength, he reached toward Ethan.

And said words that destroyed every person's understanding of the past.

"I remember you."

Ethan felt his blood run cold.

"What?"

Michael's breathing became heavy.

"I was there..."

A pause.

"The night your father tried to take you away."

Richard's face changed.

For the first time...

The powerful businessman looked afraid.

Michael continued:

"He didn't save you, Ethan."

His eyes closed again.

"He stole you."

The machines screamed.

Doctors rushed into the room.

Everyone was pushed aside.

And Ethan stood frozen.

Because the man he called father for twenty-six years...

Might not have rescued him from danger.

He might have been the danger.

But before Ethan could understand anything...

Richard quietly walked out of the room.

And on his face was one expression.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Determination.

Because Richard Carter knew one thing.

The truth was finally coming out.

And if the truth came out completely...

May you like

He would lose everything.

Including his son.
