Chapter 14: The Woman Waiting in the Darkness

The abandoned building stood at the edge of the city.
A forgotten place.
Broken windows.
Cracked walls.
Rust covering every metal surface.
It looked like a place where memories came to die.
Ethan parked his car outside.
The engine stopped.
For several seconds, he remained inside.
His hands rested on the steering wheel.
His mind was fighting with itself.
Every instinct told him to leave.
It was obviously a trap.
A stranger had sent him a message.
A mysterious location.
No explanation.
No proof.
Anyone with common sense would have called the police.
But Ethan was no longer living a normal life.
Normal disappeared the moment he discovered his entire childhood was built on secrets.
He opened the door.
The cold wind hit his face.
He walked toward the entrance.
The old door was already open.
Waiting.
Inside, the building was completely dark.
"Ethan."
The voice came from somewhere ahead.
A woman's voice.
He stopped.
"Who are you?"
No answer.
Only footsteps.
Slow.
Careful.
Then a figure appeared from the shadows.
A woman.
Around fifty years old.
Dark hair.
Tired eyes.
But there was something familiar about her.
Something Ethan couldn't explain.
She looked at him for a long time.
Then whispered:
"You have Anna's eyes."
Ethan froze.
Everyone kept saying that.
You look like her.
You have her eyes.
You have her smile.
But he had never seen her.
Never touched her.
Never heard her voice.
"Who are you?"
The woman took a deep breath.
"My name is Clara."
Ethan waited.
"Clara Morgan."
The name meant nothing to him.
But the woman continued:
"I was your mother's closest friend."
Ethan's expression changed.
"Another person who knew my mother."
Clara nodded.
"Yes."
"Another person who hid the truth."
The words hurt.
Clara accepted them.
"Yes."
Ethan looked around.
"Why bring me here?"
"Because I promised Anna."
The name stopped him.
"Promised her what?"
Clara looked at the necklace around his neck.
"That if you ever discovered the truth..."
She stepped closer.
"I would tell you everything."
Ethan touched the necklace.
"My mother gave this to me?"
"No."
Clara shook her head.
"She gave it to Richard."
Ethan frowned.
"What?"
"Anna knew she might never see you again."
Her voice became emotional.
"She gave Richard the necklace and asked him to protect it."
Ethan felt confused.
"Then why did he hide it?"
Clara looked away.
"Because Richard was protecting you from something worse."
"What?"
She didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small device.
An old recording player.
Ethan stared.
"What is that?"
"Your mother's final message."
His heart stopped.
"My mother?"
Clara nodded.
"She recorded it the night before she disappeared."
Ethan stepped forward.
"Play it."
Clara pressed a button.
Static filled the room.
Then...
A voice.
A woman's voice.
Soft.
Tired.
But alive.
"Ethan..."
His entire body froze.
He had never heard that voice.
But somehow...
He knew.
His mother.
Anna.
"My son..."
Ethan covered his mouth.
The world around him disappeared.
For twenty-six years, he had imagined this moment.
But never like this.
Anna's voice continued.
"If you are hearing this, then something happened."
A pause.
"I don't know if I will be there when you grow up."
Ethan's eyes became wet.
"But I need you to know something."
"I never left you."
The sentence destroyed him.
A truth he had waited his entire life to hear.
"I loved you before I saw your face."
"I loved you when you were still inside me."
"And I loved you every day after I lost you."
Ethan closed his eyes.
Trying to control himself.
Anna continued.
"Your father will tell you many things."
"He will tell you he protected you."
"He will tell you he had no choice."
A pause.
"Some of that is true."
Ethan opened his eyes.
Clara watched him carefully.
"But there is one thing you must know."
The recording became quieter.
"Richard Carter was not the only person who protected you."
Ethan frowned.
"What?"
Anna continued.
"There is someone inside the Carter family who sacrificed everything for you."
Ethan looked at Clara.
"Who?"
The recording continued.
"The person you think is your enemy..."
A pause.
"Is the person who saved your life."
Ethan felt confused.
The recording ended.
Static.
Silence.
"No."
He looked at Clara.
"That's impossible."
Clara shook her head.
"It's true."
"Who?"
Clara looked at him.
Then said:
"Jonathan Carter."
Ethan froze.
The same man everyone said was dangerous.
The same man who supposedly killed Anna.
The same man who had spent twenty-six years hiding.
"He saved me?"
Clara nodded.
"But he couldn't save himself."
"What does that mean?"
Clara looked toward the broken window.
"Because Victor Carter forced him to disappear."
Ethan felt his head spinning.
"Everyone says Jonathan killed my mother."
Clara sighed.
"Because that's what Victor wanted everyone to believe."
"Then who killed her?"
Clara's face became serious.
"The answer is the reason I waited twenty-six years to meet you."
A sudden sound interrupted them.
A car outside.
Then another.
Clara's expression changed.
"They found us."
Ethan turned.
"Who?"
Clara grabbed his arm.
"We have to go."
"Who is coming?"
She looked terrified.
"The people who have been cleaning up the Carter family's secrets for twenty-six years."
The building lights suddenly turned on.
Not from electricity.
From flashlights outside.
Several figures surrounded the building.
Clara looked at Ethan.
"You need to leave."
"What about you?"
She smiled sadly.
"I've waited too long for this moment."
Footsteps approached.
Someone entered the building.
A man in a black suit.
Not Richard.
Not Jonathan.
Someone else.
He looked directly at Ethan.
Then smiled.
"Finally."
Ethan stared.
"Who are you?"
The man adjusted his jacket.
"My name doesn't matter."
He looked at the necklace.
"But what matters is that you are wearing something that belongs to your mother."
Ethan stepped back.
The man smiled.
"Do you want to know why Anna Carter died?"
Silence.
"Because she discovered the truth about your birth."
Ethan stared.
"What truth?"
The man walked closer.
"The truth that Victor Carter was terrified of."
A pause.
"The truth that even your mother couldn't accept."
He leaned forward.
"You were never supposed to exist."
The room went silent.
Then the man said:
"Because before Anna gave birth to you..."
"Someone tried to kill you."
Ethan's heart stopped.
"Who?"
The man smiled.
"Your own family."
The lights went out.
And when they came back...
Clara was gone.
Only one thing remained on the floor.
May you like
A blood-stained envelope.
With Ethan's name written on it.
