Chapter 15: The Child They Tried to Erase

The blood-stained envelope sat on the dusty floor.

Ethan stared at it.

His name was written across the front.

Not printed.

Not typed.

Written by hand.

A handwriting he had never seen before...

But somehow felt familiar.

The abandoned building was silent.

Too silent.

The man in the black suit had disappeared during the blackout.

Clara was gone.

And Ethan was alone.

Except for the envelope.

The one thing left behind.

The one thing everyone had been trying to protect.

Or destroy.

Slowly, Ethan bent down and picked it up.

His fingers touched the blood on the paper.

Still fresh.

His heart tightened.

"Clara..."

He looked around.

No answer.

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

And a photograph.

The photograph was old.

Very old.

It showed Anna.

Young.

Smiling.

Holding a baby.

Ethan.

But beside her was another person.

A man.

Not Richard.

Not Victor.

Someone else.

A stranger.

On the back of the photograph was a message.

"The truth about your father is not who gave you his blood."

Ethan frowned.

He continued reading.

"The truth is who chose to become your father."

His hands tightened.

Because suddenly...

He understood.

Blood.

Family.

Names.

Everyone had been obsessed with those things.

But maybe they had been looking at the wrong question.

The question was never:

Who created him?

The question was:

Who protected him?

A noise came from behind him.

Ethan immediately turned.

The man in the black suit stood near the entrance.

He was holding a gun.

"Give me the envelope."

Ethan stepped backward.

"Who are you?"

The man ignored the question.

"Give it to me."

"Why?"

The man smiled.

"Because your mother died protecting that information."

Ethan looked at the paper.

"And you want to erase it."

The man tilted his head.

"You are smarter than I expected."

Ethan's anger grew.

"Who sent you?"

The man remained silent.

That silence gave Ethan the answer.

"The Carter family."

The man smiled.

"Everyone thinks the Carter family is the problem."

He stepped closer.

"They are only a symptom."

Ethan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

The man looked around the abandoned building.

"Your grandfather didn't build an empire alone."

A pause.

"There were people behind him."

"People more powerful than Victor Carter."

Ethan felt cold.

"Who?"

The man smiled.

"The people who control the people who think they are in control."

It sounded impossible.

But after everything Ethan had discovered...

Nothing seemed impossible anymore.

The man extended his hand.

"The envelope."

Ethan didn't move.

Then suddenly...

A loud crash came from upstairs.

Both men turned.

A figure jumped down from the broken staircase.

The man in black raised his weapon.

But before he could react, someone grabbed his arm.

A fight broke out.

Ethan stepped back.

The attacker moved quickly.

Too quickly.

Within seconds, the gun fell to the ground.

The man in black escaped through the side door.

Ethan stared at the person who had saved him.

A familiar face.

A face from old photographs.

A face that had haunted every conversation about his past.

"Jonathan..."

The man looked at him.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Jonathan Carter.

The man everyone believed was a murderer.

The man everyone believed had destroyed his family.

He looked at Ethan.

And said something unexpected.

"I'm sorry it took twenty-six years."

Ethan couldn't speak.

"You saved me?"

Jonathan looked away.

"I tried."

"You were there that night?"

Jonathan nodded.

"The night your mother disappeared."

Ethan's voice shook.

"Did you kill her?"

Jonathan closed his eyes.

Pain crossed his face.

"No."

"Then tell me the truth."

Jonathan looked at him.

"The truth is worse than anything you have heard."

Ethan stepped closer.

"I can handle it."

Jonathan gave a sad smile.

"No."

A pause.

"You think you can because you believe the worst thing you can discover is who killed your mother."

The wind moved through the broken windows.

"But the worst thing you can discover..."

Jonathan looked directly into Ethan's eyes.

"...is why she had to die."

Ethan remained silent.

Jonathan continued.

"Anna discovered Victor wasn't protecting the Carter empire."

"He was protecting a secret."

"What secret?"

Jonathan looked at the photograph in Ethan's hand.

"The reason you were born."

Ethan frowned.

"My birth?"

Jonathan nodded.

"Your mother discovered that Victor had been hiding something for years."

"What?"

Jonathan's voice became quiet.

"Victor had another child."

Ethan froze.

"What?"

"Another son."

The world seemed to stop.

"Who?"

Jonathan looked at him.

"Someone you know."

Ethan felt his heartbeat increase.

"Who?"

Jonathan hesitated.

Then answered:

"Richard Carter."

Ethan stared.

"That doesn't make sense."

Jonathan nodded.

"Because you have been told the wrong story."

A cold wind passed through the building.

"Richard is not your adoptive father."

Ethan froze.

"What are you saying?"

Jonathan looked at him.

"Richard is your half-brother."

Silence.

The words made no sense.

But neither did anything else.

"Victor was your grandfather."

Jonathan continued.

"But Richard was not your father."

Ethan's mind raced.

"Then who was?"

Jonathan looked at the photograph.

"The man standing beside Anna."

Ethan looked down.

The stranger.

The man he had ignored.

The man whose identity was hidden.

"Who is he?"

Jonathan answered:

"Someone Victor Carter spent his entire life trying to erase."

"Someone who knew the truth about the Carter family."

"Someone who was supposed to inherit everything."

Ethan looked up.

"Who?"

Jonathan's face became serious.

"Your real father."

A pause.

"Alexander Vale."

The name meant nothing to Ethan.

But it meant everything to Jonathan.

Because the moment he said it...

A phone in Ethan's pocket rang.

Unknown number.

Jonathan's expression changed.

"Don't answer."

Ethan looked at the screen.

"Why?"

Jonathan whispered:

"Because if he knows you're alive..."

A pause.

"He will finish what Victor started."

The phone continued ringing.

Ethan stared at the screen.

Then the call connected by itself.

A voice came through.

An old voice.

Calm.

Powerful.

A voice Ethan had never heard before.

But Jonathan recognized immediately.

"No..."

Jonathan stepped backward.

The voice spoke:

"Ethan Carter."

Everyone froze.

"I have waited twenty-six years to speak to you."

Ethan held the phone tightly.

"Who are you?"

The voice answered:

"The man your mother died trying to protect you from."

A pause.

"The man who knows why you were born."

Ethan felt his blood run cold.

Then the voice delivered the final sentence:

"Because you were never meant to destroy the Carter empire."

Silence.

"You were meant to replace it."

The call ended.

And Ethan finally understood.

The truth was not buried because it was dangerous.

The truth was buried because someone was afraid Ethan would find his place in the world.

May you like

And that place...

Might be at the top of the empire he was supposed to destroy.
