CHAPTER 9 The Second Birth Certificate

00:18
The countdown continued.
The numbers glowed an angry red across the forensic monitor.
Lisa's fingers flew over the keyboard.
Nothing.
Every command was rejected.
Every security override failed.
Arthur stepped closer.
His eyes narrowed.
"No..."
"What?"
Ryan asked.
Arthur pointed toward the bottom corner of the screen.
"Look at the encryption signature."
Lisa enlarged it.
There, almost invisible beneath the countdown, was a line of code.
LZ.PROTOCOL.VII
Arthur's face tightened.
"They upgraded it."
Ryan frowned.
"You've seen this before?"
Arthur nodded slowly.
"I helped build Version Three."
"This..."
"...is Version Seven."
Lisa looked at him.
"Can you stop it?"
Arthur took a deep breath.
"Maybe."
"But not by fighting it."
Everyone stared at him.
He reached for the keyboard.
"Project Lazarus was designed around one principle."
Ryan folded his arms.
"Which is?"
Arthur answered quietly.
"It trusts its creator more than its owner."
He typed a single command.
Not a password.
A name.
LAUREN_BENNETT
The countdown paused.
00:12
Nothing happened.
Then...
A second prompt appeared.
ENTER AUTHORIZATION PHRASE
Arthur closed his eyes.
"I never knew it."
Lisa looked at him.
"Think."
Arthur shook his head.
"It wasn't shared."
"It belonged only to Lauren."
The timer resumed.
00:10
00:09
Ryan looked around the room.
"There has to be something."
Evelyn hadn't spoken since the birth certificate appeared.
She was still staring at it.
Not at the father's name.
At something else.
The hospital seal.
A small handwritten notation in blue ink.
She whispered,
"I've seen this handwriting."
Everyone turned.
"Where?"
Ryan asked.
"My grandmother."
Arthur frowned.
"You're sure?"
Evelyn nodded.
"When I was little..."
"...she kept a locked wooden box."
"Every birthday..."
"...she'd take it out."
"I asked what was inside."
"What did she say?"
Evelyn swallowed.
"'One day you'll know who you really are.'"
Silence.
Ryan looked at Arthur.
"What if Lauren knew Evelyn's grandmother?"
Arthur didn't answer.
Because another possibility had just occurred to him.
One so shocking he could barely breathe.
Carter Estate
At the exact same moment...
Richard Carter sat alone in his study.
The wedding reception had collapsed.
Reporters were already gathering outside the estate.
Television vans lined the street.
He ignored them.
His attention remained fixed on an old mahogany desk.
Inside its bottom drawer lay a locked metal box.
He removed a tiny brass key from around his neck.
Unlocked it.
Inside...
Two birth certificates.
One belonged to Preston.
The other...
To Evelyn.
He stared at them for a long time.
Then quietly whispered,
"I'm sorry."
The study door opened.
Margaret entered.
She immediately recognized the documents.
"You opened the box."
Richard nodded.
"It's over."
Margaret's voice trembled.
"They know?"
"Not everything."
"But they're close."
She sat opposite him.
Thirty years of silence filled the room.
Finally she asked,
"Do you remember the promise?"
Richard laughed bitterly.
"Every day."
Thirty Years Earlier
St. Mary's Hospital.
Rain hammered against the windows.
Margaret held her newborn daughter.
Richard stood beside the bed.
Neither spoke.
Then the hospital door opened.
Leonard Bennett entered carrying flowers.
He smiled warmly.
"She's beautiful."
Richard didn't answer.
Leonard gently picked up the baby.
The infant stopped crying almost instantly.
Margaret smiled through exhausted tears.
"You have a way with children."
Leonard laughed softly.
"Maybe because I always wanted another daughter."
Richard looked away.
The room fell quiet.
Then Leonard handed the baby back.
Before leaving, he placed one folded envelope inside Richard's coat pocket.
"Remember our agreement."
Richard nodded once.
"I remember."
Present Day
Ryan's phone rang.
Dispatch.
"Officer."
"We have a warrant."
"For who?"
"Richard Carter."
Ryan stood immediately.
"What charge?"
"Obstruction of justice."
"And possible evidence tampering."
Arthur looked surprised.
"That fast?"
Ryan nodded.
"Someone inside the District Attorney's Office is moving quickly."
Almost too quickly.
Back in the forensic lab...
The countdown reached 00:03.
Lisa looked hopeless.
"We're out of time."
Arthur suddenly froze.
His eyes widened.
"I remember."
"What?"
Ryan shouted.
Arthur smiled for the first time in years.
"Lauren loved crossword puzzles."
"So?"
"Every encryption phrase she ever created..."
"...came from the same poem."
He began typing.
Lisa stared.
"What poem?"
Arthur finished the sentence.
Then pressed ENTER.
The dead remember what the living bury.
The room became silent.
The timer stopped.
00:01
For one endless second...
Nothing happened.
Then the screen flickered.
The warning disappeared.
A new message appeared instead.
WELCOME BACK, LAUREN
Arthur let out a slow breath.
"We're in."
Lisa immediately copied the drive onto three isolated systems.
Ryan nodded.
"No more surprises."
One by one...
The encrypted folders unlocked.
Folder One:
Financial transfers.
Millions of dollars.
Offshore accounts.
Folder Two:
Internal Lazarus research.
Human trial records.
Folder Three:
Executive communications.
Signed by Preston.
Folder Four:
Government contacts.
Several names were blacked out.
Folder Five:
Video archives.
Ryan clicked it.
A list appeared.
Forty-three videos.
Each labeled only by date.
Arthur pointed to the oldest.
"Start there."
Lisa pressed Play.
The screen came alive.
A hospital room.
Thirty years ago.
Black-and-white surveillance footage.
Poor quality.
A newborn nursery.
Rows of sleeping infants.
A nurse entered carrying one baby.
She checked the name tag.
Then...
Another man entered.
Richard Carter.
Everyone leaned closer.
He looked around carefully.
No witnesses.
He reached into the crib.
Lifted one infant.
Placed another inside.
Arthur whispered,
"...No..."
Ryan stared in disbelief.
Richard Carter...
Had switched two newborn babies.
The screen froze.
The timestamp ended.
Nobody in the room spoke.
Then Evelyn finally found her voice.
Barely above a whisper.
"If that wasn't me..."
"...then who was the other baby?"
Before anyone could answer...
Another file automatically opened.
Its title was just six words.
