CHAPTER 6 The Woman in Room 1708

"Activate Number Seven."
The words echoed through the silent warehouse.
No one asked what they meant.
No one needed to.
The man in the charcoal-gray suit turned toward a wall covered with photographs.
Most had red X's drawn across them.
Dr. Arthur Milligan.
Michael Graves.
Several former Preston Biomedical employees.
Government auditors.
Journalists.
Attorneys.
One by one...
Every person who had ever tried to investigate Project Lazarus.
Only three photographs remained without a red X.
Evelyn Carter.
Sophie Carter.
Vanessa Brooks.
The man picked up a black marker.
He drew a slow line across Vanessa's photograph.
"She's no longer an asset."
He looked toward another picture.
Evelyn.
"Bring her to me."
Grand Wellington Hotel
Officer Ryan replayed Vanessa's recording for the fourth time.
The room remained silent.
Every sentence raised more questions than answers.
"They were trying to frame Evelyn..."
Ryan murmured.
"Not Sophie."
Arthur nodded.
"That changes everything."
Nathan frowned.
"But why frame Evelyn?"
No one answered immediately.
Ryan finally looked at Evelyn.
"Tell me everything about your relationship with your family."
Evelyn sighed.
"It's complicated."
"I need uncomplicated."
She stared at the floor for several seconds.
"My parents always wanted one child."
"A son."
"When I was born..."
"...my father didn't even come to the hospital."
Arthur looked up.
"What?"
"My grandmother told me years later."
"My father stayed at work because he was disappointed."
"When Preston was born three years later..."
"...they threw a celebration that filled an entire country club."
Ryan quietly listened.
"I spent my childhood trying to earn love."
"Straight A's."
"Music competitions."
"Scholarships."
"It never mattered."
"Preston broke things."
"I cleaned them up."
"He lied."
"I apologized."
"He failed."
"They blamed me."
Arthur slowly closed his notebook.
"This didn't begin today."
Evelyn shook her head.
"It began before I could even speak."
Ryan's phone vibrated.
A text from Cybercrime.
Prototype phone partially unlocked.
Urgent.
Minutes later, Detective Lisa Moreno entered carrying a hardened evidence case.
She placed Preston's titanium phone on the table.
"We couldn't access everything."
"But we recovered part of the deleted message history."
Ryan nodded.
"Anything useful?"
Lisa connected the phone to her laptop.
Several damaged conversations appeared.
Most were unreadable.
Corrupted.
Missing.
Then one thread opened.
The contact name wasn't a person.
It simply read:
L
Ryan recognized it immediately.
"The same sender."
Lisa nodded.
"The messages auto-deleted."
"But fragments survived."
She opened the first one.
L: Witness Seven has checked into the hotel.
The second.
Preston: Which room?
The third.
L: 1708.
The fourth message was incomplete.
Preston: I'll handle Evelyn after...
The remainder had been erased.
Ryan looked toward Nathan.
"What room is 1708?"
Nathan checked the hotel system.
His expression slowly changed.
"It..."
"...isn't reserved under any wedding guest."
"So who rented it?"
Nathan stared at the screen.
"It was booked yesterday."
"Cash payment."
"False identification."
Ryan stood immediately.
"We're going."
Room 1708
The seventeenth floor was eerily quiet.
No wedding guests.
No housekeeping.
Only soft elevator music drifting through the hallway.
Ryan approached the door.
Room 1708.
Closed.
No sounds inside.
He knocked.
"Chicago Police."
Nothing.
He knocked again.
Still silence.
Nathan swiped the master key.
The lock clicked.
Ryan slowly pushed the door open.
Darkness.
Curtains closed.
The room smelled faintly of antiseptic.
Not perfume.
Not food.
Medicine.
Ryan swept the room with his flashlight.
Bedroom.
Empty.
Bathroom.
Empty.
Kitchenette.
Empty.
Then...
Arthur stopped.
"Wait."
He pointed toward the wardrobe.
One door stood slightly ajar.
Ryan opened it carefully.
Inside...
Hung a white laboratory coat.
Pressed perfectly.
The name embroidered above the pocket made Arthur stagger backward.
Dr. Lauren Bennett
Arthur whispered,
"No..."
Evelyn frowned.
"You know her?"
Arthur looked as though he'd seen a ghost.
"She..."
"...she died."
Eight Years Earlier
Dr. Lauren Bennett had been Project Lazarus's lead clinical researcher.
Brilliant.
Fearless.
Impossible to intimidate.
When Arthur first raised concerns about the project...
Lauren had been the only scientist willing to stand beside him.
Together they copied thousands of confidential files.
They planned to meet federal investigators.
The meeting never happened.
The next morning...
Lauren's car plunged into Lake Michigan.
Police ruled it an accident.
The case closed within forty-eight hours.
Arthur never believed it.
Now...
Her lab coat hung inside a locked hotel room.
Ryan searched the wardrobe further.
A suitcase.
Inside it...
Women's clothing.
A passport.
Reading glasses.
Prescription medication.
Someone had been living here.
Recently.
Then Lisa noticed something.
"Officer..."
She held up the passport.
Ryan took it.
The photograph showed Dr. Lauren Bennett.
Issue date...
Three months ago.
Expiration...
Ten years from now.
Ryan stared.
"This passport is genuine."
Nathan looked confused.
"That's impossible."
Arthur's hands trembled.
"If that's real..."
"...then Lauren never died."
Before anyone could process the revelation...
The hotel television suddenly switched on by itself.
Static filled the screen.
Then an image appeared.
Live security footage.
Room 1708.
Taken from the ceiling.
Ryan looked up instinctively.
Hidden inside the smoke detector...
A tiny camera.
A familiar blinking green light.
The screen flickered.
Then a woman's face appeared.
Older than her passport photo.
Gray streaks in her dark hair.
Tired eyes.
But unmistakably alive.
Dr. Lauren Bennett.
She looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this..."
"...it means I've already left."
Arthur whispered,
"Lauren..."
She continued.
"I don't have much time."
"They're watching every exit."
"I've spent eight years hiding."
"Changing names."
"Changing countries."
"Waiting."
"Waiting for someone brave enough to reopen Project Lazarus."
Her voice broke.
"I never stopped collecting evidence."
She held up a thick red folder.
"This contains everything."
"The financial records."
"The human trials."
"The deaths."
"The names."
Ryan stepped closer to the screen.
"Where are you?"
Lauren looked down for a moment.
Then answered.
"Not here."
"I checked out six hours ago."
The room fell silent.
She had anticipated this.
She knew they would come.
Then Lauren said something that froze everyone.
"I've hidden the evidence where Preston would never think to look."
Arthur leaned toward the television.
"Where?"
Lauren smiled sadly.
"Inside the only person he has underestimated his entire life."
The screen went black.
Ryan frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Arthur slowly turned.
Not toward Ryan.
Not toward Nathan.
Toward Evelyn.
And for the first time since the wedding began...
He looked at her not as a victim...
May you like
But as the key to a mystery that had been buried for thirty years.
