CHAPTER 11 The Empty Bed

The pediatric ward erupted into chaos.

Nurses ran in every direction.

Police officers sealed every entrance.

Parents pulled frightened children close as alarms echoed through the hospital.

Room 314 stood open.

The bed was empty.

Sophie's stuffed rabbit lay on the floor.

One ear had been torn open.

The hidden microSD card...

Was gone.

Evelyn stood frozen in the doorway.

Her mind refused to accept what her eyes were seeing.

"No..."

She whispered.

"No..."

Then louder.

"SOPHIE!"

Her scream echoed down the hallway.

Ryan immediately ordered the floor locked down.

"No one leaves."

"Check every security camera."

"Every elevator."

"Every stairwell."

A young security officer ran toward him, pale-faced.

"Sir..."

"The cameras..."

Ryan's stomach tightened.

"What about them?"

"They went offline."

"When?"

The officer checked his tablet.

"For exactly ninety seconds."

Ryan closed his eyes.

Ninety seconds.

Long enough.

Professional.

Again.

The Stuffed Rabbit

Arthur knelt beside the torn rabbit.

He carefully turned it over.

The stitching had been sliced cleanly.

Not ripped.

A scalpel.

Someone had known exactly where to cut.

The microSD card was gone.

But something else remained.

Hidden deep inside the stuffing.

Arthur frowned.

"What is this?"

He reached inside.

His fingers brushed against metal.

Tiny.

Cold.

He slowly pulled it free.

It wasn't another memory card.

It was a child's silver bracelet.

Engraved with one name:

EVELYN

Ryan stared.

"Hospital identification."

Arthur nodded.

"Newborn size."

Everyone looked at one another.

This wasn't Sophie's bracelet.

It was thirty years old.

Someone had hidden it inside the rabbit after the wedding.

Not before.

Ryan realized it instantly.

"The kidnapper left us another clue."

Arthur shook his head.

"No."

"He left us proof."

Hospital Security Office

Technicians replayed every surviving camera angle.

Hallway.

Lobby.

Emergency entrance.

Parking garage.

Nothing.

Then one camera flickered.

Loading...

Loading...

A single frame appeared before the blackout.

Ryan leaned closer.

A woman wearing blue scrubs pushed a wheelchair.

A child sat beneath a hospital blanket.

Face hidden.

The woman wore a surgical mask.

But her eyes...

Arthur inhaled sharply.

"I know her."

Ryan looked up.

"Who?"

Arthur didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he pointed at her left wrist.

A faded burn scar.

Half-moon shaped.

"I've seen that scar before."

"Where?"

Arthur whispered,

"Project Lazarus."

Eight Years Earlier

The underground laboratory never appeared on company blueprints.

Officially, it didn't exist.

Researchers entered through biometric doors hidden behind ordinary storage rooms.

Arthur remembered everyone who worked there.

Especially one young physician.

Dr. Naomi Pierce.

Brilliant.

Quiet.

Unquestionably loyal to Lauren Bennett.

She had received the scar during an explosion caused by a failed chemical trial.

Arthur had bandaged her himself.

Then...

One day...

She disappeared.

Preston announced she had resigned.

Nobody ever saw her again.

Present Day

Ryan immediately searched federal medical databases.

Nothing.

Medical license revoked.

Employment history erased.

Social Security number inactive.

Almost as if Naomi Pierce had never existed.

Nathan frowned.

"That's impossible."

Ryan answered quietly.

"Not if someone erased her."

Carter Estate

Margaret Carter sat alone in the nursery that had belonged to Preston decades earlier.

Richard had been taken into custody.

The mansion felt hollow.

She stared at an old family photograph.

Richard.

Preston.

Evelyn.

All smiling.

All pretending.

A maid knocked softly.

"Mrs. Carter..."

Margaret looked up.

"Yes?"

"A package arrived."

"No return address."

Margaret opened the envelope.

Inside...

One photograph.

Nothing else.

It showed two newborn babies lying side by side.

One wore a bracelet marked:

Baby Carter

The other...

Baby Dawson

Across the back, someone had written:

One child was stolen.

One child was abandoned.

Both deserve the truth.

Margaret's hands began to tremble.

Unknown Location

Sophie slowly opened her eyes.

The room smelled faintly of cedar wood.

Not hospitals.

Not chemicals.

Wood.

Warm light filtered through lace curtains.

Birds chirped outside.

She wasn't tied up.

She wasn't gagged.

She was tucked beneath a handmade quilt.

Across the room sat an elderly woman knitting.

Silver hair.

Kind eyes.

She smiled gently.

"You're awake."

Sophie immediately backed against the headboard.

"Where's my mommy?"

The woman set down her knitting needles.

"She's looking for you."

"Then take me home."

"I can't."

"Why?"

The woman looked genuinely sad.

"Because if I do..."

"...they'll find you."

Sophie frowned.

"Who's they?"

The woman didn't answer.

Instead, she walked to the window and quietly pulled the curtains shut.

Outside...

A black SUV rolled slowly past the house.

The elderly woman watched it disappear.

Only then did she speak.

"They've been searching since dawn."

Sophie's voice trembled.

"Did you kidnap me?"

The woman turned back.

"No."

"I rescued you."

Chicago Police Headquarters

Ryan gathered every available detective.

Maps covered the conference room walls.

Photographs connected by strings.

Preston.

Lauren.

Arthur.

Richard.

Vanessa.

Naomi.

Amelia.

Sophie's kidnapping.

The stolen microSD.

The switched babies.

None of it looked like a single case anymore.

It looked like an organization.

Ryan pointed to the center of the board.

"Everything leads back to one thing."

Project Lazarus.

Before anyone could respond...

Lisa entered carrying a recovered hard drive.

"We got something."

Ryan looked up.

"What?"

She plugged the drive into the projector.

"It survived Michael Graves' car crash."

Arthur stood.

The drive contained only one video.

Recorded the morning of the wedding.

Michael Graves faced the camera.

His face looked terrified.

"If you're watching this..."

"...I'm already dead."

Ryan exchanged a glance with Arthur.

Michael continued.

"I helped delete evidence."

"I helped hide the experiments."

"I helped ruin innocent people."

"But I never touched the children."

Ryan leaned closer.

"What children?"

Michael swallowed.

"There weren't two babies."

The room became silent.

"There were..."

"...three."

Arthur's chair scraped violently across the floor.

"No..."

Michael looked directly into the camera.

"The third baby..."

"...is the reason they're still killing."

The video ended abruptly.

Every detective in the room stared at the frozen screen.

Ryan slowly looked around.

"If there were three babies..."

May you like

"...then we've only uncovered one-third of the truth."
