CHAPTER 8 The Wrong Child

The words echoed inside Preston's mind.

Wrong child.

He turned the faded photograph over again.

The handwriting wasn't his father's.

It wasn't his mother's.

He knew both well enough to recognize every curve of every letter.

This belonged to someone else.

Someone who had been inside St. Mary's Hospital thirty years earlier.

Someone who knew something about the day Evelyn was born.

His phone buzzed.

L: Burn the file.

Preston didn't move.

The message remained unread.

For the first time in years, he wasn't thinking like a CEO.

He was thinking like a frightened son.

Grand Wellington Hotel

Officer Ryan spread every piece of evidence across the conference table.

The photograph.

The anonymous messages.

The prototype phone.

Vanessa's recording.

The fake passport.

The mysterious microSD card hidden inside Sophie's stuffed rabbit.

One question connected them all.

"What if this was never about framing Evelyn?"

Arthur looked up.

Ryan continued.

"What if someone wanted us to find all of this?"

Nathan frowned.

"You mean..."

"...we're being led?"

Ryan nodded.

"Every clue has arrived exactly when we needed it."

"The bouquet."

"The recorder."

"Room 1708."

"The photograph."

"Almost as if someone wants us to solve the puzzle."

Arthur crossed his arms.

"Then why attack Sophie?"

Ryan answered quietly.

"Because somebody lost control."

Sophie was asleep in the pediatric observation room.

A nurse had dimmed the lights.

Her stuffed rabbit rested against her chest.

Inside its cotton stuffing...

The tiny microSD card remained hidden.

Outside the room, Officer Megan Foster stood guard.

Hospital security had doubled patrols.

No visitors without authorization.

At least...

That was the plan.

At 9:17 p.m., a woman wearing blue surgical scrubs approached the nurses' station.

"I need to check on the concussion patient."

The receptionist glanced at the clipboard.

"Name?"

"Dr. Collins."

The receptionist frowned.

"I don't have a Dr. Collins on tonight's schedule."

The woman smiled politely.

"Emergency neurology consult."

She handed over a hospital ID.

It looked genuine.

The receptionist hesitated for only a second.

"Room 314."

The woman thanked her and walked calmly toward the elevators.

No one noticed that the badge's magnetic strip had never been scanned.

No one noticed the slight delay before the elevator doors closed.

No one noticed...

Because everyone was watching the police.

Room 314.

Sophie slept peacefully.

Officer Foster stood outside, speaking quietly into her radio.

The woman in scrubs rounded the corner.

She carried no medical bag.

Only a clipboard.

"Evening, Officer."

Foster nodded.

"Doctor."

"Just a quick neurological assessment."

Foster checked the authorization sheet.

Everything appeared normal.

She opened the door.

"I'll be right outside."

The woman smiled.

"Thank you."

The door closed.

Silence.

The woman walked slowly toward Sophie's bed.

She wasn't looking at the child.

She was looking at the stuffed rabbit.

Exactly where Arthur had hidden the memory card.

She reached out.

Her fingers stopped only inches away.

Then...

Sophie's eyes opened.

The little girl blinked sleepily.

"You're not my doctor."

The woman froze.

Children noticed details adults often missed.

Sophie tilted her head.

"My doctor has freckles."

"You don't."

For half a second...

Neither of them moved.

Then the woman smiled.

"You're very observant."

She reached into her pocket.

Not for a stethoscope.

For a syringe.

Conference Room

Ryan's phone exploded with alarms.

Pediatric Floor Panic Button Activated

He was already running before dispatch finished speaking.

Arthur and Evelyn followed.

The elevator felt impossibly slow.

Ryan abandoned it after two floors and sprinted into the stairwell.

Three flights.

Two.

One.

He burst onto the pediatric ward just as Officer Foster staggered backward into the hallway.

Blood streamed from a cut above her eyebrow.

"The doctor..."

"...she attacked me!"

Ryan kicked open Room 314.

Empty.

The window stood open.

Curtains billowed in the night wind.

Sophie sat upright on the bed, clutching her stuffed rabbit with both arms.

Evelyn rushed to her daughter.

"Sophie!"

"I'm okay, Mommy."

Ryan scanned the room.

No attacker.

No syringe.

Nothing.

He knelt beside Sophie.

"Sweetheart..."

"Did she touch you?"

Sophie shook her head.

"No."

"What happened?"

The little girl hugged the rabbit tighter.

"She wanted Bunny."

Ryan's eyes narrowed.

"The rabbit?"

Sophie nodded.

"I told her no."

"Then the police lady came in."

Officer Foster stepped into the room, holding her aching head.

"I heard Sophie scream."

"The woman shoved me and jumped out the window."

Ryan hurried to the opening.

Three stories below...

A maintenance awning had broken the fall.

Beyond it...

A black motorcycle disappeared into traffic.

Professional.

Planned.

Fast.

Arthur looked at the rabbit.

"Check it."

Evelyn carefully unzipped the small seam.

Her hands trembled.

The cotton stuffing remained intact.

The microSD card...

Was still there.

Whoever the woman was...

She hadn't succeeded.

Digital Forensics Lab

An hour later.

The tiny microSD card rested beneath a forensic microscope.

Technician Lisa Moreno inserted it into an isolated reader.

Everyone watched the monitor.

One folder appeared.

No name.

No date.

Just a symbol.

A phoenix rising from flames.

Arthur's face lost all color.

"I know that logo."

Ryan looked at him.

"It was Lauren's."

Lisa clicked the folder.

Seven files.

Six encrypted.

One accessible.

The accessible file contained only a single scanned document.

A birth certificate.

Ryan frowned.

"For who?"

Lisa enlarged the image.

The room became silent.

Name: Evelyn Grace Carter

Date of Birth.

Correct.

Hospital.

Correct.

Mother.

Margaret Carter.

Then...

Ryan's eyes stopped.

Father.

The line did not read Richard Carter.

Instead, it read:

Leonard Bennett.

Arthur whispered,

"No..."

Evelyn stared at the screen.

"I don't understand."

Ryan looked from the document to Arthur.

Then back again.

"If this certificate is authentic..."

He paused.

Choosing his words carefully.

"It means Richard Carter..."

"...was never your biological father."

The room spun around Evelyn.

Her entire childhood.

Every rejection.

Every cold stare.

Every whispered insult.

Every reminder that she "didn't belong."

Suddenly...

They sounded less like cruelty.

And more like...

A secret.

Just then, the computer emitted a sharp warning tone.

A countdown appeared on the screen.

REMOTE WIPE INITIATED

00:30

Lisa shouted,

"Someone's accessing the card!"

Twenty-nine seconds.

Twenty-eight.

Ryan slammed his hand on the keyboard.

"Disconnect it!"

Lisa pulled the cable.

The countdown continued.

Twenty-two.

"It has its own processor!"

Arthur's face went pale.

"Lazarus encryption..."

"Once triggered..."

"...it destroys everything."

Twenty.

Nineteen.

Eighteen.

Lisa looked desperately at Arthur.

"Can you stop it?"

Arthur stared at the flashing timer.

Then whispered two words that chilled everyone in the room.

May you like

"...Not alone."
