CHAPTER 10 The Truth Buried in the Cradle

No one moved.
The room was so quiet that the low hum of the forensic workstation sounded deafening.
On the monitor, the next file waited.
WATCH THIS ONLY AFTER VIDEO ONE
Ryan looked at Lisa.
"Copy it before we open it."
She nodded immediately.
Within seconds, the video had been duplicated onto three encrypted drives.
"Done."
Ryan took a slow breath.
"Play it."
The screen faded in.
Unlike the nursery footage, this video was in color.
The timestamp read:
June 18, 1996.
Exactly one day after Evelyn's birth.
The camera was hidden inside what looked like a doctor's office.
Richard Carter sat across from Leonard Bennett.
Neither man spoke for almost a minute.
Finally, Leonard broke the silence.
"You almost ruined everything."
Richard rubbed his forehead.
"I had no choice."
"You always have a choice."
Richard slammed his fist onto the desk.
"You promised me a son!"
Silence.
Leonard's expression didn't change.
"I promised you a future."
"Not a son."
Richard laughed bitterly.
"My investors wanted an heir."
"My board wanted stability."
"My father wanted a grandson."
"I couldn't walk into that house carrying another daughter."
Leonard leaned forward.
"So you switched them."
Richard looked away.
"I did what I had to."
Ryan paused the video.
The room erupted.
Nathan stared at the screen in disbelief.
"He admitted it."
Arthur didn't celebrate.
Instead...
His face became increasingly pale.
"Keep playing."
The video resumed.
Leonard opened a thick folder.
Inside were two birth certificates.
Two infant photographs.
Two tiny hospital bracelets.
He slid them across the desk.
"You don't understand what you've done."
Richard looked up.
"They'll never know."
Leonard shook his head.
"No."
"You've mistaken biology for destiny."
Richard frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Leonard answered slowly.
"My daughter..."
"...Lauren..."
"...already knows."
Richard's face drained of color.
"What?"
"I told her everything."
Ryan's pulse quickened.
Lauren had known.
For thirty years.
Richard stood abruptly.
"You shouldn't have."
Leonard remained calm.
"I trust her."
"You shouldn't."
Richard leaned across the desk.
"If this secret comes out..."
"...everything we've built collapses."
Leonard answered with one sentence that changed everything.
"It already began collapsing the day you stole a child."
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Ryan rewound the recording.
Not because he doubted what he'd heard.
Because he wanted to hear one line again.
"You stole a child."
Not switched.
Stole.
Ryan looked at Evelyn.
"We've been asking the wrong question."
She frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"We assumed two babies exchanged places."
Arthur's eyes widened.
"Oh..."
Ryan nodded slowly.
"No baby came from your family."
"He stole someone else's child."
The room fell silent again.
Nathan whispered,
"Then..."
"...who are Evelyn's real parents?"
Before anyone could answer...
Lisa interrupted.
"There's another file."
Its title read:
OPEN ONLY IF RICHARD DENIES EVERYTHING
Ryan clicked it.
The screen displayed a scanned letter.
Written by hand.
Signed by Leonard Bennett.
Ryan began reading aloud.
If you are reading this, Richard has lied again.
He always believed he could bury the truth beneath enough money.
He was wrong.
The infant he brought home was not his daughter.
She was never related to the Carter family.
She belonged to another woman.
A woman who died believing her child had perished during childbirth.
Evelyn's hands began shaking.
Ryan continued.
Richard believed replacing the baby would protect his inheritance.
Instead, he created something he never anticipated.
He raised the one person capable of destroying him.
Arthur slowly whispered,
"Lauren..."
"...you brilliant woman."
Ryan reached the final page.
There, folded into the letter...
Was another photograph.
A young woman.
Twenty-five years old.
Dark hair.
Bright green eyes.
Holding a newborn baby.
On the back, someone had written:
Her name was Amelia Dawson.
Remember her.
Ryan stared at the name.
"Does anyone recognize her?"
Nobody did.
Not even Evelyn.
Carter Estate
Police cruisers surrounded the mansion.
Red and blue lights flashed against the massive stone walls.
Richard Carter calmly opened the front door before officers could knock.
"I've been expecting you."
Ryan walked inside.
Richard looked tired.
Older.
Smaller than the man who had stood proudly at the wedding only hours earlier.
"You have questions."
Ryan nodded.
"I do."
Richard gestured toward the study.
"Then let's stop pretending."
Inside the study...
Ryan placed the video on the desk.
Richard didn't watch it.
He simply closed his eyes.
"So..."
"...Lauren kept her promise."
Ryan remained silent.
Richard finally looked up.
"I'll tell you everything."
Ryan switched on the recorder.
Richard took a long breath.
"I never wanted to hurt Evelyn."
Ryan didn't react.
"You neglected her."
"You humiliated her."
"You protected the man who assaulted her daughter."
Richard lowered his head.
"I know."
"Why?"
The answer came almost immediately.
"Because..."
"...every time I looked at her..."
"...I saw my crime."
Ryan frowned.
"What crime?"
Richard's voice cracked for the first time.
"I didn't just steal a child."
"I stole two lives."
Ryan leaned forward.
"What happened to Amelia Dawson?"
Richard stared into space.
"I don't know."
Ryan's expression hardened.
"You expect me to believe that?"
Richard nodded slowly.
"Because..."
"...she wasn't the person I betrayed most."
Ryan waited.
Richard whispered,
"It was Margaret."
"My wife."
Ryan looked confused.
"She knew?"
Richard shook his head.
"No."
"She spent thirty years loving a daughter who wasn't hers."
"And mourning the daughter she believed had died."
Ryan froze.
"So Margaret..."
"...has a biological daughter alive somewhere?"
Richard nodded.
A single tear rolled down his face.
"I've been looking for her..."
"...for thirty years."
Just then, one of the officers burst into the study.
"Sir!"
Ryan stood.
"What happened?"
The officer looked stunned.
"The hospital called."
Ryan's stomach tightened.
"Sophie's been taken."
The room went completely silent.
Richard's face turned white.
"No..."
Ryan grabbed his coat.
"How?"
The officer swallowed.
"There was no forced entry."
"No struggle."
"Just one handwritten note left on the empty bed."
Ryan snatched the evidence bag.
Inside was a folded piece of paper.
He opened it.
Only five words were written.
May you like
Now you know how.
